Don't you care about smurfs?

Just watched an episode of the TV cartoon Smurfs when I waited for pizza. they were great. Brilliant colours. Simple clear fun. A bit strange to see 100 Smurfs living together with ONE female Smurf. Ha, its funny.

I read Smurf comix as a kid. And they're NOT in the TOP 100 thread

:-(((

They were appealingly drawn but I always thought the comics weren't very funny nor particularly entertaining. I like the scene in Donnie Darko where they talk about how the smurfs gangbang the smurfette and papa smurf gizzes in her face or whatever.

that was the shittest part of that film.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 13 April 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

OK I agree, they're cute not funny. cute = the smurf word here.

Erik, Sunday, 13 April 2003 11:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

in italys smurfs are called 'poofs'. nuff said.

i thought it was il puffi or something? (where did i get that bit of random trivia?

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 13 April 2003 13:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can't decide if I like them or I despise them. But they're fascinating in a weird way. Maybe it's the blueness and their odd white leotards.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 13 April 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

hmmmmmm... possibly il puffi, either way it caused a confusing conversation with my little italian cousin.

i only just saw Donnie Darko and this thread reminded me of that Smurfs bit ha

Les Schtroumpfs, as they're known in French.

I always used to joke with one of the other ilxors that the early days NYC faps were exactly like the Smurf village. I think him calling me Smurfette all the time was what stopped me from posting on ILX for like a year.

Who was Papa Smurf, then?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, Tom has the beard.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, but he's not in New York.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, right. I thought you were talking about in the general scheme of things, like.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

In another case from Nicole's "How sad that I know this" file, there was another female smurf. Sassette:

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

In that case, Tom would be an excellent candidate. :-)

Sassette? Dear god in heaven.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

There were lots of female Smurfs. Is it the fault of the TV show's producers that most of them happened to be busy when the cameras were rolling?

Chris P (Chris P), Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Didn't Sassette come out of nowhere for the final season, though? Like she suddenly popped out of toadstool and said, "I'm HERE and I'm SASSY!"

Also, wasn't she really butch (for a Smurf, which means on the Girly-o-meter she registered an 8 compared to Smurfette's 10 and Brainy's 500)?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, Sassette was one of those "young and hip" characters they add in a desperate attempt to stay on the air, like Poochie on Itchy and Scratchy. She was totally a butch lesbian, the overalls are a dead giveaway.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

i totally don't remember sasette.

there's a group of people in toronto putting little smurf figurines in the underground path in t.o, to cheer up the place and give direction (i think they're colour coded for north, east, south and west) i haven't seen any yet though.

Papa Smurf: Michael Daddino.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 13 April 2003 22:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

all the smurfs were gay ... smurfette was a collective beard!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 13 April 2003 22:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

(lunatic eighties urban legend time: the "smurfs are gay" actually was something that went around the school when the smurfs were on saturday tv ... along with "the smurfs are Satan worshippers!" [cause they danced around a star or a circle, i forget which] and "the smurfs are all communists!" [cause Smurftown was a "commune" and Papa Smurf looked like Karl Marx])

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 13 April 2003 22:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Smurf jokes are about as original and "daring" as Scooby Doo jokes - i.e., not.

Has anyone seen the original comic strip (from Belgium?) it was based on?

one year passes...
"the smurfs are all communists!" [cause Smurftown was a "commune" and Papa Smurf looked like Karl Marx]

OMG!

Does my memory fail, or was there also a black (I mean ink-black, not of African descent) Smurf who was evil in the cartoon?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah, here he is!

Hmm, apparently the black Smurfd appeared in the original French comic only, not in the cartoon. Here's a quote from a messageboard:

I do remember The Black Smurfs! I read it as a little boy growing up. However, it was in French. There was a small section of my school library that had Dupuis comics (which were hardcover, so they're not really "comics"). I also seem to recall a French comic about barbarians, but it really didn't have any appeal to me (must be a cultural thing).

The Black Smurfs was eventually translated for the Smurfs TV show on NBC. Instead of being black, the Smurfs turned purple. The episode was the source of much anxiety for BBS Administrator Sassette, who remembers being transfixed to the screen in horror and amazement.

This is funny, because I never read the Smurf comics, and I clearly remember a black smurf appearing in the cartoon. Maybe they made a different version of the episode for Europeans?

Another quote from the same discussion:

However, there is an incredible sensitivity (one could argue rightly so) to anything here that would remotely appear to disparage African Americans.

To give you an example, there was once an eBay auction a friend put up, selling 2.0007 Angry Smurf (the black Smurf). My buddy received a nasty email explaining that the term "black" Smurf was unacceptable, and that the correct term was "African American". The email was an angry, vituperative rant.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Wait, "BBS Administrator Sassette"?
