Is anyone in this bitch a Filemaker whizz?

As we need a solution designing for us (I could have a go, but am too busy and rusty)? We'd pay, of course, though not as much as the 10K we've been quoted thus far.

As in Filemaker Pro?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Aye. We currently have an Access 97 database, but with getting Macs, that is no longer an option. It would be nice to also have a solution that does other funky stuff too that our current (mainly contact managament) database does.

Im not a big fan of Filemaker myself (newer versions are not nice on old hardware) but I'll see if I can dig someone who is.

I'm pretty good with FileMaker. What kind of funky stuff are you needing to do? It's not as powerful as Access in that regard, but.. more user friendly, I suppose.

I'm more or less a professional FileMaker monkey (even had an article published on some FileMaker techniques). Email me (or I'll email you) with the nitty-gritty.

ten years pass...

Ten years later...

People familiar with the situation told AppleInsider that FileMaker let go of approximately 20 employees Thursday night, including some company veterans with over 13 years of experience, in a bid to remain profitable amid slumping sales.

FileMaker's senior public relations manager Kevin Mallon would neither confirm nor deny the rumor, saying company policy precludes him from commenting on staffing matters.

The reported shake up comes just days after FileMaker announced it would be discontinuing development of its database application Bento, an important consumer-facing title that boasted versions for the Mac, iPad and iPhone. In a post to its support website, FileMaker said the program would be on sale through Sept. 30, while technical support is scheduled to continue through July 30, 2014.

Sources say Thursday's rumored job cuts are closely related to Bento's demise, adding California-based external representatives, sales engineers, and technical support staff were let go. The layoffs may extend further, however, as at least one person responsible for sales of the flagship FileMaker software is said to no longer be with the company.

Oddly enough, based on billable hours I still am a professional FileMaker monkey

i haven't used filemaker since the late 90s! i'm surprised it still exists. did it get a boost w/ the onset of web 2.0 somehow (as a backend for the explosion in net-using companies)?

FM Server has a web server built into it and a PHP subset that's pretty handy. The big deal for my work was using it as a front end to MySQL - I could get pretty complex solutions running very quickly.

anyone using it in 2016? pretty sure i need a one-to-many two-table db. excel is not cutting it. we're mostly mac. is fmp the way to go?

Almost all of my billable hours this year are coming from FMP work, so yeah.

If you just need to get something going and quickly, FMP is great. Have heard "we've been using Excel but it's not cutting it" many times. On the down side, I'm not really thrilled with FMP's new pricing model.

It's been a year since I had any billable FMP work. This week, version 17 was released with a new user price tag of *long inhale* --- FIVE HUNDRED AND FORTY DOLLARS. Who the fuck do they think they are- Oracle?

Too bad nuApple won't bring it back in and make it free. Panorama is such a great product, but I can't convince anyone to use it.

Stick a fork in this thread and product. Airtable is inferior, less capable, and will most likely take over the small business internal app/tool market. The few small biz FileMaker clients I talk to are all excited about Airtable, because FM sharing still SUCKS.

What a difference a year makes. I guess I'll still take FM business.

Claris’s Plans for FileMaker Bode Well for Individual Users

Claris will rename FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Go (for deploying FileMaker apps on the iPhone and iPad), and FileMaker Server (for hosting multi-user FileMaker apps) to Claris Pro, Claris Go, and Claris Server. A new Web-based development environment called Claris Studio will join and integrate with the other products to provide a modern, cloud-based system. Claris Studio can—among much else—host public-facing forms that pipe data from anonymous Web users into Claris Pro and create tables, graphs, and dashboards using data from Claris Pro.

The more important change for longtime individual FileMaker users is that there will be a freemium version of Claris Pro with free access to Claris Studio (and presumably Claris Go). Its only restriction is that databases created with the freemium version are restricted to a single user—but there are no size or time constraints. The apps are also free for professional developers, who will pay a single, as-yet-unspecified Claris Platform licensing fee only when they wish to deploy a solution to additional users. Since Claris is wholly owned by Apple, deployment could even mean putting an app on the Mac App Store. Those with existing licenses can continue to rely on them but won’t get access to Claris Studio without switching to a Claris Platform subscription.
