Well, it does have the production values of win lose or draw and pets win prizes, the same wacky zany sense of humour too. Mr McMoist, may I please remind you that you are not a comedian, please leave the jokes to the professionals.

Indie made itself the mainstream but pretends to itself it has holy inoculation against Britney-cooties.

eh? explain please so I can think of a witty come-back

cabbage, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The cookie crumbles kinda both ways although more for the good than the bad. The bad being mainly Pets Win Prizes and his drunken antics with the man Evans.

Great on 606 though as mentioned esp with DKelly. Even greater on Radio 1 Saturday/Sunday morning show scaring all those who had previously tuned in to DLT in same slot. Played what ever records took his fancy which meant interesting sounds and future battles with playlist mafia. Great phone calls, building bodies from peoples names, small children riding in to piles of tincans on trikes and people blowing things up.

He went to Virgin after Radio 1 but then was sacked from there and no longer on national radio. We need him back in the same way we need Mark and Lard back doing an intelligent evening show.

MarkS, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Baker is responsible for Hornby because Baker made Paul Gascoigne possible. And, of course, via Sniffin' Glue, after which came the fanzines, through which indie respectability was conferred on football / us. Baker is not to be blamed for this, since Hornby is an irrelevance.

Cabbage is responsible for the Premiership because the Premiership was a failed plan to secure Liverpool's position at the top of English football forever. And Cabbage IS Liverpool.

Cabbage is responsible for the Premiership because the Premiership was a failed plan to secure Liverpool's position at the top of English football forever. And Cabbage IS Liverpool.

This is true, It seems that I am a member of a secret Premiership cabal, so secret that even I don't know about it. I don't mind being blamed for that but I won't accept responsibility for the prawn sandwich eaters, no way. I can proudly say that I have never been in a corporate hospitality box.

cabbage, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Wait, Millwall? I thought he was Mr. Spurs-Till-Death himself.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Kelly is Spurs, so much so that he has at least once (and according to my Spurs season ticket holder flatmate, more than that)fronted a consortium that has set out to buy up Spurs. There was a lot of talk about it last season before ENIC finally came in for them.

cabbage, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Kelly = spurs
Baker = millwall?

mark s, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ah, thank you. I now realize the error of my 'Confusing Large Football-Loving Englishman Named David' ways. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

'David' -- JESUS GOD. 'DANNY' I'll go home now.

jel, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Perhaps he was entertaining back in the days of yore, but there are few people who irritate me like he does. Plus this bloke I used to know, who was some bizarre experiment to cross breed a computer nerd and a football nerd, was a big fan. Therefore: Danny Baker smells.

DG, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

How come nobody has mentioned MURDER yet? (Prob because it is super- libellous).

Tom, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"killer of Bob Marley" Yeah, what's that about, eh?

DG, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

did he say "fancy a kick-around, bob?" one fateful afternoon?

carsmilesteve, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I was about to say, first I ever heard of this particular story. What gives?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Okay, thought that would titilate you. The story is that about a year before Bob's tragic death he and the Wailers were in London. Being rabid mad football fans they decided to have a kickabout with the NME. Imagine the scene unfit Music Journo's vs The Wailers - who were to all intents and purposes quite tasty. Anyway Baker - being known as a football fan (though chubby) felt an extra duty to try and play well so as when they were losing about 10-0 he decided to revert to usual Millwall tactics of the age and went in too footed on old Bob.

Bob was instantly in hideous pain, wailing indeed, and the match was abandoned due to this Baker caused toe injury. A quick trip off to hospital later on tour revealed that said to was not just broken but had become cancerous. Within the year Marley was up there with his namesake Jacob.

Whilst the causal connection between a bad tackle and cancer is highly unlikely and certainly won't stand up in a court of law, Baker blames himself to this day for cutting Bob's career short - and at the same time halving the birth rate in Jamaica.

Pete, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Those of you vaguely interested, Baker is back on radio at his spiritual home GLR (I mean London Live - pointless name change). Saturday mornings 8 - 11am. Let's hope Kelly, Dr H and Aliss Moss turns up too.

Pete, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

one month passes...
Allis, yes. Dr. H, no.

Baker and Kelly will be teaming up again on Radio 5 in the new year (from 11 to 12:30).

And lo, what goes around comes around. He just won the Sony Award for best DJ for his BBC London breakfast show, which it was pointed out was ironic for a man whose contract expliocitly tells him not to play records.

Six O Clock Show: classic
NME: not sure, classic if rockist?
The Big Breakfast: classic
Danny Baker After All: dud
606: classic
Pets Win Prizes: dud
guest spot on Fantasy Football where he chokes on jellied eels while wearing a Flamengo shirt: classic
TFI Friday: dud
as half of screenplay writing duo Chris Baker: dud

but i'm sure he's good on BBC London so remarkably the classics just about have it. i'm generally impressed/envious of his career/fingers in pies ala Keith Allen.

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:05 (eighteen years ago) link

NME: not sure, classic if rockist?

In fact he was totally non-rockist at the NME, he was a soulboy and was into pop music, Michael Jackson, Earth Wind and Fire etc

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:07 (eighteen years ago) link

yeh i figured he was into Rare Groove and such - what years was he at the NME though?

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Kind of late 70s, early 80s?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:10 (eighteen years ago) link

... I think he thought all that postpunk stuff was a load of old pony basically

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I always think he was there later than that because really I'm thinking of Danny Kelly.

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:16 (eighteen years ago) link

You missed another of his achievements:

Starting the Sniffin' Glue fanzine with Mark Perry: classic

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:21 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, NME baker was apparently amazing. big disco fan. i forgot about sniffin glue, which could scarcely have been more rockist. weird.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:24 (eighteen years ago) link

how exactly was sniffin glue 'rockist'? why is it 'weird' that Baker cld like prog and punk AND soul AND pop etc etc?

Andrew J L, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Didn't he do the last NME pre-Madness of King Pop interview with Michael Jackson around the release of 'Thriller' in late 82 ?

Dusty Baker.....DUD.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:40 (eighteen years ago) link

in that jackson interview he mostly talked abt wack-a-mole!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Should I not object to that commentary then?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 06:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Baker at NME: classic for the Chic album review, for the Jackson interview (Yoshi! "I'm playing with words you see...is funny"), for the Britfunk piece (which if you can find it will show you EXACTLY what he thought of post-punk), for Samuel KB Amphong, for his Teazers columns ("Basement 5 are my favourite group of all time! Sorry, who was it we were talking about again?") and especially for the funniest singles columns ever run, in the NME or anywhere else.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 06:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Whoops, two weeks, not two months. What am I going to listen to in the mornings now?!

Mind you, listening to a rubbish morning show will probably drive me out of bed, which would be a good thing.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I can't listen to his Radio London show as it frustrates me, every time he gets going, he has to stop for dreary, interminable quarter-hour traffic and news summaries. Put him on Radio 2. Wogan's past retirement age!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:44 (eighteen years ago) link

You can listen to the "listen again" on the BBC London website which handily cuts out the boring bits.

I must admit Vicky is probably right. I thought having a morning show I really liked would help me get up int he morning, but actually i usuall listen until 9 and am then late for work*. Any news on if he is moving anywhere. Getting a nice Sunday morning show???

*Not that in the scheme of things this really matter.s

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Hold up! He did not Start "Sniffin Glue". He joined it towards the end.

Oh, when he was on the NME, his first (I think) singles review column was all raving about disco 12" singles. Most of which had terrible titles like "I'll never forget my favourite disco" but as I've never heared the tracks, I'll refrain.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, and ALSO!!!

He'd write stuff like "It sounds like Highway Star, and I've always hated Highway Star" which was a LIE! which he admitted later. It was more pretence than the CLASH!!! (I mean this, btw). Also, when "So it goes" had a retrospective, a lot of the lost vids were supplied by DB. Hang on, who had a video recorder in 1976-1977? Very rich people, that's who.

Despite all that, I vote Classic.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I doubt if you'll get him on Radio 2 on Sunday morning - Steve Shite's Sunday Love Songs and Michael Parkinson (the Geir Hongro of broadcasting) are immovable. So it would have to be tedious BBC Radio London, which manages to reduce one of the world's great cities to the level of Chipping Norton. On a wet Wednesday morning. In November. 1974.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 09:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Crappy news, but probably to be expected. I had a feeling he wouldn't stick that lousy early-morning slot forever. And the format was patently unsuitable - no records allowed and Baker having to stop every five minutes for travel bulletins.

It would be nice if they could do the obvious thing and put him back together with Danny Kelly again. It seems silly to have them doing different shows on the same station.

Giving Jon Gaunt the breakfast slot would probably be the worst thing ever, but I doubt I'll be listening to it anyway.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Giving Jon Gaunt the breakfast slot would probably be the worst thing ever

PLEASE tell me that's not happening.

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Well I won't be listening to it if that turns out to be the case. I suppose that's why Wogan does so well in the breakfast ratings; he seems to be the only DJ on that time who doesn't shout at you continually.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Me and the missus were so angry with BBC London when they dropped Baker's show for a fortnight at the beginning of hostilities in Iraq (because it was deemed "inappropriate"; a rolling news service was put in its place) that we wrote our one and only Points Of View-style letter of complaint to the Beeb. We got some risibly-argued PoS response which just made us angrier.

Sad to see him go (though, in recent weeks, I've been craving sleep so much I've been hitting the snooze button more often than not).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Its odd actually, I rather like the format now, and wonder if I will be able to wait between records for more banter. Nice to get rid of the news and stuff, but this is BBC radio.
