Danny Baker: Classic or Dud

Invoking about the only ILE rule there is : if they are mentioned three times they get a thread of their own. So cockernee rent-a-gob, occasional guest star in Viz, killer of Bob Marley, Sniffing Glue co-founder, original presenter of Pets Win Prizes, saviour of Radio One, booted off of Radio One, inventor of Mark Kermode, man fired from more radio stations than Chris Morris. Or just a fat bloke who supports Millwall.

Which way does the cookie crumble here other ILE-ers.

Pete, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Danny Baker is a fat stupid annoying git, yes he is a Slpknot fan too. Heres one of my questions, Rolf Harris head mind and voice on Danny Bakers body, or Danny Bakers head mind and voice on Rolf Harris body................choose or die situation. I could do these all day.

Ronan, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Only bloke to be decent on 606 on Radio 5, sacked for telling fans to vent their spleens at incompetent referees. For this classic, in fact I used to like his radio phone-in shows that weren't footy based too, he had entertaining nutters phone in rather than mindless ranters, so I can't bring myself to hate him, despite later descent into Chris Evans based hell. And yes he is a bit smug.

cabbage, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Didn't Baker invent 606? When he left (for Radio 1 - and it was still Radio 5 then - not dumbed down Five Live) he suggested they got someone else who was a football fan like Nick Hancock. Instead they got David Mellor in - which was hideous. These days professional commentators do it - completely removing the point that the show was about the fans view. And concocting imaginary football teams with names of garden implements.

Five years ago Baker wrote all the things that Maconie now does.

Pete, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Danny Baker on the radio = classic, esp. his old GLR show where there were no ads to interrupt the flow.

Danny Baker on the TV (particularly when he's scripting lame gags for Angus 'autocue' Deayton) = ultra-dud.

I found my 'Danny Baker is a twat' Viz T-Shirt only the other day...

Andrew L, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

dud. he looks like he's from the 1600s

gareth, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Pete, I believe he did invent 606 on Radio 5, but some tit who's on radio Sheffield claims to have invented the format, I wish I could remember his name, James something, possibly James H Reeve, that name rings a bell.

His smug appearances on TFI Friday were none more dud though.

But his radio shows had me in stitches, particularly when accompanied by Mr Kelly, who I am sure is odious at other times but they did seem to work well together.

cabbage, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

He's too fat for TV I fear. Though always found the easy camaraderie of Win, Lose or Draw and Pets Win Prizes to be a considerable draw.

Pete, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Kelly = never odious, I think, just one of too many who still behaves as if in their ascetic purity they lost, when actually in their slumming compromises they won.

Baker multiple ditto, wiv complications.

mark s, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

The good thing about them is that they both do seem to truly love football, and have done for years, however, are they partly responsible along with Hornby et al for the "new fan"? and the fact that football became the latest bandwagon to jump on in the mid 90s?

cabbage, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

I think they have to be held partly responsible, though the whole "new fan" and fottoball is cool attitude was surely never that bad a thing. The idea that you either 100% immerse yourself in football or nothing was always one of the problems with it. The beauty of 606 and Baker & Kelly Upfront is they did to football what ILe/M does for its subject - it allows itself to be tangental and silly, or intelligent and pithy on wwhatever subject bought up. If not both.

Can we blame Baker for The Premiereship? There is probably an argument out there....

Pete, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

"truly love football" = totally responsible for Hornby et al and ALL THAT FOLLOWED.

So are you cabbage. Indie made itself the mainstream but pretends to itself it has holy inoculation against Britney-cooties.

mark s, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Well, it does have the production values of win lose or draw and pets win prizes, the same wacky zany sense of humour too. Mr McMoist, may I please remind you that you are not a comedian, please leave the jokes to the professionals.

cabbage, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Indie made itself the mainstream but pretends to itself it has holy inoculation against Britney-cooties.

eh? explain please so I can think of a witty come-back

cabbage, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

The cookie crumbles kinda both ways although more for the good than the bad. The bad being mainly Pets Win Prizes and his drunken antics with the man Evans.

Great on 606 though as mentioned esp with DKelly. Even greater on Radio 1 Saturday/Sunday morning show scaring all those who had previously tuned in to DLT in same slot. Played what ever records took his fancy which meant interesting sounds and future battles with playlist mafia. Great phone calls, building bodies from peoples names, small children riding in to piles of tincans on trikes and people blowing things up.

He went to Virgin after Radio 1 but then was sacked from there and no longer on national radio. We need him back in the same way we need Mark and Lard back doing an intelligent evening show.

MarkS, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Baker is responsible for Hornby because Baker made Paul Gascoigne possible. And, of course, via Sniffin' Glue, after which came the fanzines, through which indie respectability was conferred on football / us. Baker is not to be blamed for this, since Hornby is an irrelevance.

Cabbage is responsible for the Premiership because the Premiership was a failed plan to secure Liverpool's position at the top of English football forever. And Cabbage IS Liverpool.

Tim, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Cabbage is responsible for the Premiership because the Premiership was a failed plan to secure Liverpool's position at the top of English football forever. And Cabbage IS Liverpool.

This is true, It seems that I am a member of a secret Premiership cabal, so secret that even I don't know about it. I don't mind being blamed for that but I won't accept responsibility for the prawn sandwich eaters, no way. I can proudly say that I have never been in a corporate hospitality box.

Wait, Millwall? I thought he was Mr. Spurs-Till-Death himself.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 28 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Kelly is Spurs, so much so that he has at least once (and according to my Spurs season ticket holder flatmate, more than that)fronted a consortium that has set out to buy up Spurs. There was a lot of talk about it last season before ENIC finally came in for them.

Perhaps he was entertaining back in the days of yore, but there are few people who irritate me like he does. Plus this bloke I used to know, who was some bizarre experiment to cross breed a computer nerd and a football nerd, was a big fan. Therefore: Danny Baker smells.

DG, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

did he say "fancy a kick-around, bob?" one fateful afternoon?

carsmilesteve, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

I was about to say, first I ever heard of this particular story. What gives?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (seventeen years ago) Permalink

Okay, thought that would titilate you. The story is that about a year before Bob's tragic death he and the Wailers were in London. Being rabid mad football fans they decided to have a kickabout with the NME. Imagine the scene unfit Music Journo's vs The Wailers - who were to all intents and purposes quite tasty. Anyway Baker - being known as a football fan (though chubby) felt an extra duty to try and play well so as when they were losing about 10-0 he decided to revert to usual Millwall tactics of the age and went in too footed on old Bob.

Bob was instantly in hideous pain, wailing indeed, and the match was abandoned due to this Baker caused toe injury. A quick trip off to hospital later on tour revealed that said to was not just broken but had become cancerous. Within the year Marley was up there with his namesake Jacob.

Whilst the causal connection between a bad tackle and cancer is highly unlikely and certainly won't stand up in a court of law, Baker blames himself to this day for cutting Bob's career short - and at the same time halving the birth rate in Jamaica.

Those of you vaguely interested, Baker is back on radio at his spiritual home GLR (I mean London Live - pointless name change). Saturday mornings 8 - 11am. Let's hope Kelly, Dr H and Aliss Moss turns up too.

Six O Clock Show: classic
NME: not sure, classic if rockist?
The Big Breakfast: classic
Danny Baker After All: dud
606: classic
Pets Win Prizes: dud
guest spot on Fantasy Football where he chokes on jellied eels while wearing a Flamengo shirt: classic
TFI Friday: dud
as half of screenplay writing duo Chris Baker: dud

but i'm sure he's good on BBC London so remarkably the classics just about have it. i'm generally impressed/envious of his career/fingers in pies ala Keith Allen.

NME: not sure, classic if rockist?

In fact he was totally non-rockist at the NME, he was a soulboy and was into pop music, Michael Jackson, Earth Wind and Fire etc

Baker at NME: classic for the Chic album review, for the Jackson interview (Yoshi! "I'm playing with words you see...is funny"), for the Britfunk piece (which if you can find it will show you EXACTLY what he thought of post-punk), for Samuel KB Amphong, for his Teazers columns ("Basement 5 are my favourite group of all time! Sorry, who was it we were talking about again?") and especially for the funniest singles columns ever run, in the NME or anywhere else.
