Has anyone ever used an ear candle?

My brother gave some to my Mum for Christmas a couple of years ago (!) and I think she found the whole experience mildly terrifying. She seemed certain, even as the candle had only just been lit that her hair was about to set on fire, etc. etc.

Nick - apparently, it's something you stick in your ear and light, thus removing any excess wax or oil. I've never seen one myself, but I'm told they do exist.
