Isadora said she won one as a child and was disappointed.

I only found out about them in 1995 and was v.confused by the whole thing. Arew the winners supposed to go meat crazy for a while, or does it go in a freezer?

What's a meat raffle? It sounds like a euphemism....

smee (smee), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

A man goes round a pub selling raffle tickets. The winning ticket wins a big carrier bag of meat.

Balderdash entry : "meat raffle"

1.Word War II slang for carpet bombing.
2.Cockney term denoting an East End pub full of loose women.
3.A man goes round a pub selling raffle tickets. The winning ticket wins a big carrier bag of meat.

Also the winners do have to go meat crazy for a while and then it goes in the freezer. But (again in the wild wild west) a Mormon family with 12 kids will take care of meat winnings quickly.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

I want to go meat crazy. (Yes yes, WORST EUPHEMISM etc etc...)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

I thought this had to do with some sort of popular prostitution. I'm disappointed.

I thought this was a thread about Meatls Raff!

The following suggests Classic, especially if it's true:

'A south-Wales man was awarded £23000 by a Cardiff judge after
breaking his arm in a maestag pub. The man had slithered on a trail of grease which, it was pointed out, had been caused when another customer slithered across the bar room floor with two pork chops tied to his feet. The landlord explained that the customer was celebrating having just won the chops in the pub's christmas raffle.'

Well I thought it was funny.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Was it you won the raffle?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 17:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

meat raffles (or draws, in my particular neck of the woods) are so classic. i remember waking up the morning after my dad had won the local working men's club one and opening the fridge and it being ENTIRELY FULL OF MEAT and then eating LOTS OF MEAT (including steak which we never had [insert tale of childhood poverty and/or lack of avocados here]) for tea that night.

Hitting a possum with your truck on the way home from the bar = winning the meat raffle.

I am indeed having a big, hearty meaty roffle right now.

BARMS, Monday, 14 March 2005 11:50 (nineteen years ago) link

When on a brief holiday to Dorset in 2003, I went in two pubs on Portland Bill and both had meat raffles advertised - that's advertising in the sense of saying 'why not come to the pub on Sunday, where you could win a bag of meat'.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 14 March 2005 12:46 (nineteen years ago) link

A big bag of meat's pretty tempting after a few pints.

elwisty (elwisty), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I remember my first encounter with the concept of meat raffles. I was bemused.

I still am, for that matter.
