I want to try and watch a Christmas movie every day in december, like an advent thing.

Anyone recommend some obscure ones? Don't mind if they're not entirely based around Christmas, at least set at the same time will do.

I see no-one's mentioned Britcom Nativity! yet in this thread. Not obscure exactly, but well worth watching. Probably my second favourite Christmas film after Elf, in fact.

Someone on Letterboxd has compiled an exhaustive list of Christmas movies that is currently 1512 titles long.

Just looking at the 112 films on the list that I have apparently seen, some of these are really iffy--like, I'm sure there actually are Christmas-set scenes in The Godfather, Annie Hall, Metropolitan, Clueless and Grand Illusion, but a) damned if I can remember most of them, and b) you'd hardly call them Christmas movies on the basis of these scenes.

Anyway, my recommendation (on this list, and not yet mentioned here) would be Mon Oncle Antoine, a lovely Quebecois coming-of-age film from 1971. My assumption would be that it is not as well regarded elsewhere as it is here in Canada, but it is in the Criterion Collection and in Roger Ebert's "The Great Movies" series. Set entirely around Christmas--the main action climaxes on Christmas Eve, as I recall--and even if its not a Christmas Movie in the It's a Wonderful Life/Christmas Vacation sense, it has a very distinctly wintery vibe that should fit the bill.

I watched that for the first time this year too & was similarly blown away, it went right into my top tier of xmas movies. almost certain i remember morbs speaking kindly of it once or twice over the years.

Is Blast of Silence an Xmas movie, have yet to see it. I loved Christmas in Connecticut when I first discovered it, then was disappointed to be unable to find anyone that rated it apart from Morrissey. Trying to remember the name of the New Orleans noir with Gene Kelly and Deanna Durbin, maybe I already posted upthread.

I didn't realize until I watched it for the first time last night, but the conclusion of Pandora's Box takes place on Christmas Eve. I'm not a particular fan of silent movies but I recommend this if you're living destitute in an attic with broken windows and snow coming in, and you need some cheer.

watched Last Christmas which was on BBC2 a couple of days ago and it was ok. nice shots of christmassy london but perhaps a too much Wham on the soundtrack.

interestingly the script was by emma thompson and bryony kimmings.

It's supposed to be a George Michael jukebox musical tho I agree that aspect kinda goes under the radar for much of it.

i never watched Christmas Vacation all the way through until this year! loved vacation (still do) but this always seemed like a shadow of that

first part always annoyed me & i’d turn it off bc it was just clark getting hit with ladders & floorboards

but once they do xmas eve dinner it definitely got WAY more enjoyable for me
