Born Sloppy - new Channel 4 Music show

Anyone watching?

Libertines - so bad they were laughable ! Karaoke Clash and Scruffy Indie Look !

Later in the show ... Ladytron and David Holmes Free Association.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 December 2002 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it Worse than The Word? better than TFI Friday?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 December 2002 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I was enticed by the www.rathergood.com trailers, and I hoped it would show them, but nothing yet. Yes, the Libertines were terrible, and it is better than The Word in that it entirely lacks Terry Christian. It is trying very hard to be a late night TFI Friday. The musical lineup is reasonably interesting (I'm thinking of Chris Evans's love for Texas), and I don't mind Sarah Cox.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 6 December 2002 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

It is a bit childish - Colin Murray chatting up women in a pub by using pop songs. A Tranny dressed as Charlotte Church - it's all rather naff.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 December 2002 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked when that guy got smacked for using the ODB song to chat up some woman in a bar but the rest of it was shite. Osymyso should be ashamed of himself for being associated with this drivel.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Friday, 6 December 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"the ODB song to chat up some woman in a bar"

it was staged managed!

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 7 December 2002 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

It's basically Jools' Hootenany, except with painfully self-conscious bouts of swearing to show how cool it is ("fan-fucking tastic, y'big shit cunts"). I hadn't realised until today how appaling the Libertines actually are.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 7 December 2002 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

A terrible terrible show, which I will probably end up watching every week.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 7 December 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

actually a terrible terrible terrible purile show.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 7 December 2002 10:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Puerile even.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 7 December 2002 10:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Ladytron blew me out for that? BASTARDS.

alexfack (alexfack), Saturday, 7 December 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

they were only on for the last outro of the show - playing 17

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 7 December 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

awful, truly awful and pretty good all at once.
the awful ? the aforementioned self-conscious swearing
(how old are you for god's sake ?) the truly awful ?
that colin guy, who i like normally on evening sesh,
pretending to get beaten up in a tv rip-off of those
old chris morris 'bloke goes into a
shop, hassles people and gets in trouble' routines off radio 1,
and the good ? an interview with charlotte church
turning out to be matt lucas in a wig coming out through a door
singing 'pie jesu' extremely funnily.

what's with the lighting and the stage in the bands bits though ?
on the word and tfi there was a big crowd, so it felt
like a gig (at least a little) this is just someone's front
room or something. it resembles nothing more than the 2nd series of
'naked city' for anyone who remembers it.

norman cook looked embarrased.

piscesboy, Saturday, 7 December 2002 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't seen it yet, although I love Sara Cox's radio show so I might like it. Then again I'm never home on a Friday night so I'll probably never see it.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 December 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

not worth the bother really

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 7 December 2002 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Norman Cook doesn't know any Pink songs!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 7 December 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Did we believe him? Or was that some sort of misjudged "I'm too cool to know things like that" lie?

By the way, when I mentioned the promising line-up at the top of the thread, I was going by the Guardian, which said Ms Dynamite was supposed to be on too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 December 2002 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

ah, she's too sensible!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 7 December 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I only know one Pink song.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 7 December 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Ladytron for Miss Dynamite... intriguing swap.

What I saw of it was rubbish, but I'm disturbed by how much that Free Association single is growing on me.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 7 December 2002 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

the worst aspects of The Girlie Show + TFI Friday X the best aspects of Naked City + The Word = Born Sloppy.
Sara Cox was even more incomprehensible than she is on her unlistenable radio show. Has she ever had a decent haircut?
Matt Lucas saved it. Ladytron saved it. Cox and rent-a-crowd and shit skits ruined it.

DavidM (DavidM), Saturday, 7 December 2002 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and how many people were convinced that Cox-eh knew who Ladytron were?

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 7 December 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it was supposed to have Ms Dynamite as well as David Holmes and Ladytron on.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 December 2002 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah.

So, The Libertines for Miss Dynamite... intriguing swap.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 7 December 2002 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

No (I'm not being very clear here), the Libertines were mentioned as well. I didn't mention them because they were not part of what made me think the musical lineup was of interest. Sorry!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 December 2002 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah.

So, playing S Club 7 out of an MX-5 going 30 mph in place of Miss Dynamite... intriguing swap.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 7 December 2002 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Apart from jel and ronan, what are boring horrible thread.

I missed the show.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 8 December 2002 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

It was truly awful. I think the best word for the Ladytron performance was "awkward". A shame because it was the only reason I watched the show...

The only thing I enjoyed was Osymyso's "old man" mix of Rockafeller Skank which Fatboy Cook didn't seem to notice was ripping the piss out of him.

Robbie, Sunday, 8 December 2002 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh actually, the Free Association were pretty good...

Robbie, Sunday, 8 December 2002 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Feel like I have to defend the Libertines - much of the shitness should be placed fairly and squarely at the feet of whoever did the sound (which *was* rubbish). Saw them at the Arts Centre a while ago, and they were bloody excellent. Nearly as good as British Sea Power a while after - who I reccommend you all go and see. Ya hear? No? Ok.

From MediaGuardian.co.uk: Sloppy Start for Cox

Sara Cox new music show has flopped on Friday after just 700,000 viewers turned on to see the first episode of Born Sloppy on Channel 4...

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 9 December 2002 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Word of mouth will certainly see that figure change for next week!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 9 December 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

so who was watching the "erotic thriller" (Radio Times) on C5, then? the ratings suggest: most of ILE

zebedee (Jeff W), Monday, 9 December 2002 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone who has not yet worked out that all C5 erotic thrillers are completely lacking in eroticism or thrills? (See also British "sex comedies".)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 9 December 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I switched over to C5 but I'd already seen that one!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 9 December 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

the show still just managed to beat the first half-hour of Later ... With Jools Holland on BBC2. Some would have defected to the irreverent Jonathan Ross chat show on BBC2, which featured the self-confessed Mr Vain, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Melinda Messenger and Sir David Attenborough.

Well, it makes a change from Sam Brown and the Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, at least...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Jools Holland's voice is so annoying, I mean does anyone deserve that on a Friday night. After seeing Vinny Jones grunt his way through Bad Bad Leroy Brown I decided I'd had my fill of Mr Bells Whiskey for the year.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

nash bridges!! u kno it makes sense!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)
