I’m hearing great things about it. seems like at worst it’s the Vatican version of something like the contender maybe but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

I read the book of this when it came out and it wasn’t super memorable (apart from a gesture I shall simply refer to as 🫴🏻🤌🏻) but I will 100% watch this because it had a lot in it that would film better if cut down. Also, aesthetic game is huge.

Ten minutes too long (what else is new?) and the eventual papal candidate is NO surprise, but it's schlocky fun.

It should go without saying: a couple plot twists are unbelievable.

Excellent, this is what I was hoping for

Thirty years ago someone like Harold Becker or Phillip Noyce would've directed it and released in spring and no one would at all be talking about it as an Oscar frontrunner, but here we are.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 28 October 2024 15:37 (two months ago) link

It looks like a fun ride (regardless of whether or not it’s a good movie).

i haven't read the source but

i believe lithgows character

is there a wider conspiracy here that was left winky in the movie

i really expected a different ending with all outside flows of info including the certificate of authenticity to have come through an interfering agency but turns out nope???

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Tuesday, 31 December 2024 22:08 (three weeks ago) link

also

highly recommend this it was as good as an irish election and the performances and the production are super

kept bringing phantom thread to mind. its certainly bitchy enough.

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Tuesday, 31 December 2024 22:14 (three weeks ago) link

Ha, good comparison. My mom and I saw it over the holiday break, as I figured she would love it and boy was I ever right. (She claims to have clocked the basics of The Twist about halfway through and I've no reason to doubt.)

Iirc this was one of my problems with the book, you are always waiting for the other shoe to drop and it just…doesn’t exist.

The shot of Fiennes hitting the deck of the Sistine Chapel right after he decided to vote for himself and God immediately punished him was painterly af

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Tuesday, 31 December 2024 23:07 (three weeks ago) link

I like that it's so into being fun. Self-aware without being meta about it, but everyone hamming it up the right amount. I would watch a 3-season series with that set of characters.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 31 December 2024 23:08 (three weeks ago) link

And yes, visually elegant too.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 31 December 2024 23:08 (three weeks ago) link

he's been a grouch all day

I would not award Fiennes for this when he's given at least three great performances in the last 20 years better, but this was fun pulp.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 December 2024 23:08 (three weeks ago) link

The Sistine Chapel filled with dust and light pouring in from the upper right was great, just barely held back from being over the top.

…How Fizzles was Cardinal Lawrence though

gyac, Tuesday, 31 December 2024 23:14 (three weeks ago) link

The visuals are obviously great, the shot of the three cardinals smoking outside, the cardinals walking through the courtyard & the light shining in from outside in the Sistine Chapel were all great. Deserves every cinematography award going.

this is the same thing again as you concentrating more on the projected cineaste bro audience of nosferatu instead of the movie in that thread, tbh.

its ok to just write about the thing itself man yknow?

please god, save us from movies about cardinals choosing a new pope that are grimly serious. amen.

Fiennes is def a lock for a nom, but Brody prob the front-runner for the win. Anyway, good movie. I had fun.

saw it last night. was expecting the bitchy gossiping from the online chatter, but wasn't expecting how beautiful some of the shots were, or how hard that final twist would hit. the music was great too.

also love how the movie establishes lithgow's character as a prissy twit in the first scene, before we're given any real reasons to hate him

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 January 2025 22:34 (three weeks ago) link

Watching this movie made me realize that I'm guilty of simony. I have bought Catholic Church relics from a NY purveyor. They are beautiful and meaningful to me. Many came in lockets, a few in monstrances, and one was mounted in a beautiful frame. I have lived with them, contemplated them and displayed them, but now as I'm getting older I don't know who to gift them to. I have a friend who is also interested in them, but I'm not sure he wants mine.

What do you do with stolen Catholic Church relics you bought that you want to pass on?

I bet none of you have ever had this experience

I loved the outcome of this film by the way, it was perfect.

Dan S, Sunday, 5 January 2025 00:52 (two weeks ago) link

Relics? like you have a digit of a saint's index finger?

rainbow calx (lukas), Sunday, 5 January 2025 00:59 (two weeks ago) link

No, just a very tiny piece of cloth or paper or wood presented in an elaborate frame of some sort

But I think these are the kind of relics that are placed under the altar in many Catholic Churches.

Dan S, Sunday, 5 January 2025 01:06 (two weeks ago) link

I’ll give you $100 for the foreskin of Jesus.

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 5 January 2025 01:15 (two weeks ago) link

The difficulty with buying items from a dealer who represents them as stolen is the lack of provenance. Your relics could be consecrated or they could be fakes. Unless there's some evidence to establish where they came from no church could accept them as objects of veneration. That would be idolatrous! So, you're most likely stuck with trying to re-establish their authenticity on your own dime, or just disposing of them as profane objects, even if they are truly holy relics.

Boy, are you in trouble!

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 5 January 2025 01:33 (two weeks ago) link

I like my foreskin fried with a mojo dressing.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 5 January 2025 03:06 (two weeks ago) link

Even lithgow couldn’t break through the gloom
I don’t think you can count what fiennes did in this as acting
Ending vote implausible

^^good reminder to leave positive reviews here every now and then.

This was good. Love a page turner on the big screen. I could have done with a bit more development of Fiennes faith/doubt, but this was more realistic. Photocopying as a plot point never misses.
