Laptop Sound - On or Off?

When you’re working on a laptop - personal or day job - is your inclination to have the sound on, or off?

As I’ve gotten older (unless I’m listening to music I’m writing about) I’m inclined to go with “off”. Pings and beeps and other sounds from a computer or a phone are just annoying and distracting, so “on” is only a temporary condition.

What say you?

I default to muting all my devices. I'd rather turn the sound on when I want to hear something than be surprised/interrupted by dings and beeps and pop-up videos.

at home, I leave it on so I can see if I get an email that requires immediate attention, like if I'm making lunch or something

At the office, I turn the sound all the way off

Pretty limited subset of things that I allow to make noise on my laptop so it's generally on (w/caveats) at home and muted at work

please for the love of humanity, off

also, on behalf of most of the world, if you need to read this, please turn off your phone sound notifications. some people no idea how much the "BING!!!!!!!!!........BING!!!!!!" sounds of people getting texts and emails drives everyone else nuts. just make your phone vibrate! or just....maybe make the wrenching decision to NOT know the second that something new happens!

signed,

Zac-BING!!! sorry, what was i was saying, i think i was signing my post like it was an email, BING! BING!!!!! zach BING fuck, damn

if I'm not actually making mixes then I'll be working with some sort of music on, in both cases headphones.

Off, always. None of my alerts anywhere make any noise, except important texts and alarms I've set.

I hate when I unplug my headphones from my laptop at night but then forget to turn the volume down to zero, so when I turn the laptop on again in the morning it bongs at me. If I'm not listening to something (hence headphones) the laptop needs to be silent.

I feel seen in these replies (in a good way)

I was doing a test in the uni library a couple months ago. Some bloke is sitting in front of me, sound on, trying to do something his computer obviously won't allow him to do. You know the sound you get when there's a prompt on your computer up that you have to answer and you try to click out of it and you get the "baling!" sound? Anyways, I heard this sound, no lie, about 100 times before it wore me down enough to politely ask him to turn his sound off. I think if I didn't say anything, he might have still been there the next day, 350000 error sounds later, still clicking, still disrupting a library

He gave me an "are you serious mate?" Look when he turned around to hear my request. Equally funny and stupid in retrospect.
These kind of situations can be avoided by having your sound off, at all times, pls people.

I have considered setting an important notification to the classic ICQ "uh oh!" noise for when I'm one row over talking to my coworkers at work. It'd be funny the first few times

on, because the only way i can tell if someone wants to talk to me is if they make my laptop go beep, otherwise i'm pretending my job doesn't exist
