Actor Christian Oliver, 51, and his two daughters, 12 and 10, killed in a plane crash in the Caribbean.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 5 January 2024 18:31 (six months ago) link

I just re-watched the 1979 Salem's Lot miniseries, David Soul was great in that... a lot of cool cameos by old-timey hollywood stars; it's still pretty freaky as well

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 5 January 2024 18:34 (six months ago) link

Still has some of the scariest scenes I've ever seen from made-for-TV

Wack Snyder (Eric H.), Friday, 5 January 2024 18:36 (six months ago) link

it scared the shit out of me when I was a kid watching it on a b+w valve television

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Friday, 5 January 2024 18:36 (six months ago) link

I can never remember whether he was Starsky or Hutch.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 5 January 2024 18:37 (six months ago) link

he was Starsky, the smart one.. Hutch was the 'street' one

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 5 January 2024 18:38 (six months ago) link

xp Yeah, Tobe Hooper directed it, he didn't pull any punches with the scary stuff

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 5 January 2024 18:39 (six months ago) link

James Mason as the vampire's henchman and keeper was so cold blooded, actually he was much scarier than the vampire

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Friday, 5 January 2024 18:42 (six months ago) link

A lot of it was filmed up in Humboldt County (where I'm from), my uncle got paid $15 to put a Massachussetts plate on his car

The house was totally fake, we drove out to have a look at it while they were filming

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 5 January 2024 18:45 (six months ago) link

I think you've got your cops mixed up. Paul Michael Glaser was Starsky (the street one), while David Soul was Hutch (the smart one.)

You don't have many of those renaissance men much anymore: stage actor, film actor, television, successful pop singer

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 5 January 2024 18:59 (six months ago) link

it scared the shit out of me when I was a kid

Seeing a *trailer* for it freaked me out!

Kim Kimberly, Friday, 5 January 2024 19:10 (six months ago) link

Vampire raising up through the kitchen floor with evil James Mason and killing the kid's parents in front of him seemed pretty hardcore for post watershed television at the time.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Friday, 5 January 2024 23:12 (six months ago) link

David Soul was a guy who had a lot of acting chops. Weirdly my first exposure to him was as one-half of a psychotic bank robbing duo in the TV film In the Line of Duty: The FBI Murders. The other psycho was Michael Gross! They were both superb and the final shootout is genuinely intense and bleak.

It would have been ace if she had worked with Suicide, but they existed in different generations.

Alan Vega was 8 years OLDER than Patty Waters. although suicide seem to be from a later era those guys were going at it surprisingly early. I think they talk about this is the notes to the blast first reissue of the second suicide LP and a disc of early demoa

I'd completely forgotten that James C. Scott worked for the CIA. Seeing Like A State is great, in some respects as important as City Of Quartz.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 22 July 2024 08:06 (five days ago) link

Against the Grain is also pretty interesting

I remember years ago Guitar Player did some kind of '100 Greatest Guitar Players' list, and Jerry Miller was slightly above Eddie Van Halen, which elicited howls of protest from the VH faithful ("Who the fuck is this?" etc.) but I think they were right

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 22 July 2024 21:22 (five days ago) link

Evelyn Thomas also co-wrote and sang lead on Fatback: Spread Love (1983) - stylistically very different from "High Energy", but actually even sassier, especially towards the end:

Unusual Detail:

In September 1979, a fast-moving brush fire in L.A.’s Laurel Canyon destroyed Mayall’s home and consumed all his possessions, including what was reputed to be one of the world’s largest and most valuable collections of vintage pornography.

Surprisingly the first member of the debut Blues Breakers album line-up to go. Clapton, McVie and Hughie Flint were the others.

psychobilly elegy (Matt #2), Wednesday, 24 July 2024 00:35 (three days ago) link

not so surprising, he was quite a bit older even back then, yeah?

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 24 July 2024 00:36 (three days ago) link

Surprising in that there's not too many records released in 1966 with all personnel still alive and kicking! Probably anyway. Now one less.

psychobilly elegy (Matt #2), Wednesday, 24 July 2024 00:48 (three days ago) link

ah, good point

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 24 July 2024 00:54 (three days ago) link

xp To make it worse, he'd inherited it from his father.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 24 July 2024 00:58 (three days ago) link

Mayall always looked pretty old to me, he was already in his mid thirties when that Clapton Bluesbreakers LP was released.

omar little, Wednesday, 24 July 2024 01:00 (three days ago) link

well he was 90 when he died which pretty much pulls his boomer credentials

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 24 July 2024 01:02 (three days ago) link

He's one of those famous musicians where I've never heard so much as a microsecond of his music. I doubt I ever will. RIP all the same!

I'll always remember her in that film writing a letter to her soldier lover as she reads it in voiceover and mails it, something very haunting about that scene.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 25 July 2024 23:58 (two days ago) link

Wonder when it will be time for me to watch that one again. That whole movie is a classic combination of elements about childhood, cinema and adult repression.
