the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

he blocked me for being a reply guy so I can't read it (I like him, but have always found his social media presence a bit willfully obtuse...he said something quite a while ago that everyone misinterpreted, because IMO he was just not clear, and I said so, and got immediately blocked)

I keep a “stan account” (sort of as a joke or diversion) that had absolutely zero going on, but was following a few dormant Brazilian fan accounts; and suddenly they sprung to life, along with a bunch of new ones, in a wave of follows and reposts. Pretty cool…

I’ve noticed I’ve blocked more people on Bluesky than I’ve blocked in the same time on other social media apps. Every week there’s some new fandom drama that brings the most unhinged takes to my timeline.

Last week was people responding to Ed Piskor’s suicide with posts like “all predators should delete themselves?” “Predators?” “Delete themselves?”

The last few weeks has made me reconsider the value of Google’s identity verification requirements for Google+. However, it’s certainly possible social media is, at the end of the day, bad.

In the final year or so that I was on Twitter, I took to using my actual photo as a pfp, and a close version of my real name – as a self-policing measure, to restrict the impulse to be unnecessarily rude, snarky, whatever. (I know that many ppl choose to be non-anonymous anyway, and many others can’t/won’t do it for safety reasons; but it “worked for me” in that respect.)

maybe the only reason civilization happened is that at some point physically you could “not be there” or could usually “walk away”?

when the algorithm is feeding you terrible shit it’s hard to get away.

also harder online: re-enacting that story of the Kung bushmen who surrounded a tribe member who was a relentless bad-actor and then filled him with arrows. and then had absolutely the entire community stab him for community participation. i read it an a relatively serious book didn’t check on its truth.

and not that i could recommend it, mind, i def would not do.

So what I can see this morning seems *completely* on-brand for BlueSky, in that I have a few posts that reference "The Discourse" and "The Bad Thing" without specifying what the fuck they're actually talking about, and then a couple of references to war profiteering and genocide without naming names.

So... looks like most any other morning on BlueSky to me.

tbf bluesky still has *much* better structural baffles against the intrusion of such nonsense, which i encountered only at third hand (ppl i follow saying "i don't know what this current beef is even about" and replies saying -- as is traditional -- "you're better that way")

by contrast twitter's algorithms long tended to put "shit that you'll hate” right there in yr face (which since twitter is much bigger always meant a ton of shit, except in much greater proportion since musktiems)

yeah def the most interesting bluesky design decisions are around reducing conflict, like when someone gets blocked in a thread the thread becomes very hard to read for everyone, which yeah is in total contrast to twitter where conflict is promoted for engagement
