Also, I genuinely thought every living adult hated The Boy the Mole the etc. I'm astonished it managed the win but maybe AppleTV+ is truly the best campaign force on the scene right now aside from A24.

ceremony was fine, Kimmel exactly the kind of mildly funny, dull host it requires; no big experimental set pieces and therefore no risk of cringe. very little surprises IMO, I got about half my picks on my ballot correct even though I wanted Tar and Banshees to win some stuff, I had a feeling this was going to be a blow out.

I haven't seen it, the only people I've seen say they hate it are here on ILX though.

feel happy for all the winning actors tho quan is the only one i personally would’ve picked

idk how anyone can watch everything etc. and pick curtis over hsu as the most compelling supporting performance but that’s probably why i don’t have an academy membership

She's the daughter of Hollywood royalty, the closest thing to an industry vet in the four categories, etc.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 March 2023 14:48 (one year ago) link

A Facebook friend just posted "I want to be friends with the entire cast and crew of EEAAO," which is otm. It felt like somebody's hipster-nerd brunch group made a movie and brought all their friends with them.

xp yeah i guess caring about that stuff comes with the academy membership card

avatár the way of watár (voodoo chili), Monday, 13 March 2023 14:50 (one year ago) link

EEAAO can keep its 7 awards but All Quiet needs to give at least two back imo

عباس کیارستمی (Eric H.), Monday, 13 March 2023 14:51 (one year ago) link

What surprises me is the number of people who thought Bassett would win; I guess you have to follow the precursor twaddle to realize she'd been knocked out weeks ago.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 March 2023 14:51 (one year ago) link

Personally extremely happy that Oscars have been shifting away from just acknowledging worthy studio dramas for a while now.

Related to this, it was nice to see Curtis mention genre movies (and their fans) in her speech.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 13 March 2023 14:54 (one year ago) link

i'll say that the EEAAO director's speech that culminated with "thanks for unlocking my genius" didn't go over very well with anyone I watched with (but people were talking a lot and we missed some of what he said prior to that)

also, they did a pretty good job of not playing anyone off on stage EXCEPT for the Indian filmmakers who did the Elephant film. Lame! They let that old dude who looked like Art Garfunkel ramble on forever after that.

In THE BOY, THE MOLE, THE FOX, AND THE HORSE the mole asks the boy what he wants to be when he grows up and the boy says “…kind.” 🥴

Ke Huy Quan has been out of the picture for a while, but it kind of boggles the mind that Michelle Yeoh has only been hovering on the periphery of Hollywood for so long. Like, she should have gotten an Oscar for the motorcycle stunt in "Police Story 3."

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 March 2023 15:06 (one year ago) link

Thought the Daniels’ speech about creativity and everyone’s potential & importance of collaboration was great tbh

giant bat fucker (gyac), Monday, 13 March 2023 15:08 (one year ago) link

I've never heard of "The Boy, The Mole," etc., what's objectionable about it? That tweet makes it sound lame, but it's a children's movie?

Chris L, Monday, 13 March 2023 15:25 (one year ago) link

It's all very well meaning and indeed based on a children's book, and the animation's quite nice. It's essentially a 'we choose our own families' story, an important enough message as ever. But much like "An Irish Goodbye" its sentiment is pretty sugary and 'well of course this was going to win' in feel, in combination with the BBC/Bad Robot/Apple/name actors factor. "My Year of Dicks" was easily, totally better all around.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 March 2023 15:33 (one year ago) link

Personally didn’t care much for anything about EEAAO except the incredible score, I’m a big fan, it was a technical marvel

I don’t know why The Whale exists and I don’t know why Darren Aronofsky is allowed to make movies

I’m sad Anne Heche wasn’t mentioned last night

lurching toward (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 13 March 2023 15:38 (one year ago) link

I quite liked Black Swan but aside from that I have derived no positive feelings from any Aronofsky films, I genuinely regret putting myself through Requiem For A Dream and mother! and suspect that Pi was only of interest because it looked like a Shinya Tsukamoto film and I imagined there was something I wasn't getting.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Monday, 13 March 2023 15:43 (one year ago) link

An update... despite my best efforts, I still have not been allowed into the Dolby Theater. I am thinking I may need to go elsewhere.

I heard my dear friend @ladygaga gave quite an emotional performance, though.https://t.co/6mu9UOIGY4

I hadn't grokked that The Whale was also an A24 film — so basically a complete A24 sweep of the major categories. That's something.

My ratings:

Tar
The Fablemans
Avatar 2
Women Talking
Elvis
All Quiet on the Western Front
Top Gun Maverick
Everything Everywhere All At Once
The Banshees of Inisherin

didnt see: Triangle of Sadness

the animation's quite nice.

the dedication to the fake rough-lines-left in style meant that the scene where a character gets caught in a wire was visually incomprehensible because the "loose" swirly lines remained after he was ostensibly freed from the "wire" swirly lines. as ill-thought, insultingly tokenistic and dullardly as the script.

As much as I can not countenance a Marvel movie winning anything, much less an acting award, seeing Angela Bassett taking that loss seemingly pretty hard wasn't a highlight of the night

عباس کیارستمی (Eric H.), Monday, 13 March 2023 16:54 (one year ago) link

I can't really comment because I haven't seen the movie, but I have seen other Marvel movies, so am I right in guessing that her nomination was based on like, one big somber, melodramatic monologue?

having worked covering the video game industry i'm friends w/a not insignificant number of younger gen x/older millennial asian men on FB and IG who identified as somewhat nerdy in school and their extreme joy at Ke Huy Quan's win has been extremely touching.

Yeah, it seems to be an incredibly millennial film to me.

i don't know why angela bassett would have even thought she had a chance, frankly; she's in the movie for 10 minutes; yeah she gave a good speech and she's amazing in basically everything, but this wasn't the role to peg her hopes on. Also I thought it was a bit odd they brought up Boseman again; I mean, yes, good actor, but he made like 2 movies and died two years ago. Are they going to talk about him every year? It looks like the Academy can't think of any other actors of color to put up as inspirational.

Regardless of how deserving she was, she was widely considered the frontrunner a month ago after she won the Golden Globe and the Critics' Choice Award.

Call me Weasel

Wheeze! wheeze! wheeze! all the morning long; I wheezed that juice till I myself almost melted into it; I wheezed that juice till a strange sort of insanity came over me, and I found myself unwittingly wheezing my co-laborers' hands in it, mistaking their hands for the gentle globules.... Come; let us wheeze hands all round; nay, let us all wheeze ourselves into each other; let us wheeze ourselves universally into the very juice and sperm of kindness.

I can't see myself ever watching The Whale but this comment on Fraser from Alfred's liveblog last night is spot on: "I like him. He had it in him to be the Joel McCrea of his generation, a solid actor doomed to being perpetually overlooked."

We tuned into the last hour of the show last night and my husband, who doesn't follow current cinema at all, was pleased that "two people (he) loved in the 90s" won the top acting awards.

Weird how it’s Angela Bassett who’s considered undeserving. The screentime of the cast, A24 shouldn’t have submitted JLC for consideration! It was a strong category and hers must have been the weakest role nominated. Yeah I know how the Oscars work, I’m also saying it remains shit.

Screen time data for Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)

- Michelle Yeoh - 1:35:16 (68.38%)
- Ke Huy Quan - 58:33 (42.03%)
- Stephanie Hsu - 42:18 (30.36%)
- James Hong - 19:37 (14.08%)
- Jamie Lee Curtis - 17:15 (12.38%) pic.twitter.com/3ufMsCFdfQ

and sometimes it's the other way around: an obvious supporting actor promoted to the main category because the studio/their agent insists.

when you break down the times like that tbh it's curtis and hong who seem like supporting and everyone else who seems like a lead (hsu in a grey area but she certainly seems like a lead when you watch it).

agree that this was not the role to give JLC her lifetime achievement oscar for. have always rly loved JLC tho like since i was five lol so

the person it woulda been nice to give a career-acknowledging oscar to for this as long as we're doing that is james hong; what a legend.

difficult listening hour, Monday, 13 March 2023 19:17 (one year ago) link

Found a 2016 article called something like "30 great actors that have never been Oscar nominated," and JLC was on that list with this bit at the end of her blurb:

Will It Happen? Her current roster makes it look unlikely, but Curtis is one eye-catching-role-in-a-breakout-indie away from a career renaissance, should she want it.

So ... yeah.
