I guess I mean just kind of "sure, whatever" rather than "sanguine" there. I'm not scouring their forums smashing beers and cackling insanely, basically

Brighton, what a good side. Another big dice roll coming up for them I guess, perhaps some of their good players...should stay there

hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Sunday, 28 May 2023 19:53 (eleven months ago) link

happy for michael jones but would have liked everton gone. in general always pleased when all the newly promoted teams stay up. leics looked like they'd turned it around pre world cup but then tanked it immediately after the break. jesse marsh always seemed like a high positivity bullshit merchant to me.

4-4 at saints kinda sums up lfc's p abject season.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 28 May 2023 19:57 (eleven months ago) link

4-4 Saints doesn't really sum up our season at all. Speaking to a few people that went today and it's pretty much a resigned sneer, with a healthy long-suffering shrug of 'well, we get to go to Milwall'.

three weeks pass...

Can someone please fire Mason Mount into the sun so I can stop hearing stories about Utd possibly maybe making another bid for him, repeat ad infinitum in increments of 500k

hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Friday, 23 June 2023 22:19 (ten months ago) link

think if that happened there would probably be even more reports about him on the news

Saudi Arabia buying every player in European football really could bring some fun to the game, leaving the best non league players going to Newcastle for 8 figures

It’s obviously horrendous on every different scale.

I'm into it, make the premier league more like the big south american leagues, where there's a more regular /egalitarian distribution of success as the good teams can't afford to hang onto their best players.

Keep waiting for one of these players to have an epiphany like Jonathan E in Rollerball, for some reason I always thought Kevin de Bruyne might be the guy

Toploader on the road, unite and take over (Bananaman Begins), Friday, 23 June 2023 23:03 (ten months ago) link

Yes, I hope the Saudis hoover up as many players as they can.

Renaissance of the Celtic Trumpet (Tom D.), Friday, 23 June 2023 23:16 (ten months ago) link

Its also possible Saudi Arabia may recognize UEFA member Isreal soon

I feel kinda bad for Ruben but I guess the money will be a consolation

Is there a summer transfer thread? It seems like it could be the most ridiculous window we’ve seen in a while. Everyone’s already moved to Saudi Arabia and Florida, the England midfield is now worth 200m+, presumably something stupid will happen with Neymar and Chelsea will still be a mess.

lol at psg president blithely stating that mbappe has to sign a new contract or he will be sold cos he can't leave for nothing next year as if mbappe himself has no choice in the matter.

Rice and Havertz won't help Arsenal win the Premier League in 2023-2024.

would you like havertz with that

Is Kane finally gonna leave Spurs? And if so, who replaces him?

not this summer i think

ans to the second question is a reconfiguration i guess

dele alli interview by gnev is p bracing. actually surprised he held it together to play as well as he did for so long tbh

oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 July 2023 14:48 (ten months ago) link

total school of hard knocks upbringing - no wonder he's had problems.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 13 July 2023 15:42 (ten months ago) link

also no surprise that dele says he's v newly out of rehab and would rather have done an interview in a couple of months time but a couple of tabloids were gonna run a story.

oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 July 2023 15:45 (ten months ago) link

I knew he was a rough diamond picked up from non-league, but had no idea he'd had survived such a fucked up childhood. Getting dangled off a bridge and getting sent to family in Africa to "learn discipline" seem like experiences that make surviving Mourinho seem quite trivial.

nate silver has a very well thought-through idea for the new season

I mean I'd tweet out how I think the Premier League (and thereby access to the Champions League) should be open to US franchises but that's the tweet that might actually get me cancelled.

Lmao. Sure, fly a bunch of teams 7-10 hours only for the US based team to lose 5-0 anyway

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Saturday, 22 July 2023 16:20 (nine months ago) link

I think our American owner mainly bought our club because he seemingly cannot raise (or is not willing to spend) the megabucks needed to transform the USL club he is CEO of into something that would be admitted to the MSL. Not saying my club are going to be promoted to the prem obv! If he started doing tweets like Nate Silver's up there he'd be in trouble because he's very online and public facing, but thankfully he's not that much of a fucking idiot.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Saturday, 22 July 2023 16:42 (nine months ago) link

usl is my bat signal

mls doesn't care how successful a lower division club is since promotion/relegation doesnt exist here, so the way to go up is (a) have $500m (or more?) to pay the mls expansion fee AND (b) be in a market that mls covets. for instance, usl has san diego loyal, a moderately successful club with below average attendance partially owned by landon donovan. that club is not going to mls, though a team playing in san diego is bc a different ownership group willingly paid half a billion us dollars for it. the next team for mls will probably be las vegas which has one of the worst usl teams currently.

we believe in meritocracy here, and by merit, we mean money.

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Saturday, 22 July 2023 17:11 (nine months ago) link

Luton, pay your effing mls expansion fee! Just for Americans: newly promoted premiership club Luton have got a football ground where fans have to walk through someone's back garden to access the away stand.

The Saudis will surely be in for 24/25? If Shakhter Karagandy and Hapoel Be'er Sheva are in they'll have a case (full of maps showing Riyadh is closer to Rome than Karagandy is).

Although on the other hand they didn't take advantage of the seemingly obvious move to swap federations with Russia. Unless they want to bypass it altogether and tag in on the next attempt at a super league

villa trying again with a leverkusen winger. diaby is p good tho.

oscar bravo, Saturday, 22 July 2023 19:56 (nine months ago) link

jonathon liew on mbappe made me chuckle

This is, after all, one of the world’s outstanding forwards, and there is an understandable reluctance to decamp to an uncompetitive league with a tiny international audience, where he will doubtless be used as a public relations tool for one of the world’s most abusive regimes. Say what you like about Mbappé, but he learns from his mistakes.

oscar bravo, Thursday, 27 July 2023 12:27 (nine months ago) link

Everyone, step forward if you have a coach.

Not so fast, Wolverhampton

Pursue a guy for six years, then piss him off in less than one do he asks to be let go.

Wonder who he wanted to sign that they said no to.

Probably everyone

I've got enough blame to go round, Lopetegui has form for walking away from teams and I'm not sure how much he was outright lied to. All parties have handled this about as badly as possible

Still think we've got some really good players and the core of a good team. Survival in the Prem is gonna hinge on how quickly the new guy - I am not thrilled at the prospect of O'Neil - can get a style in place, and how lucky we are with injuries

Longer term Fosun probably need to fuck off, they've looked rudderless and inept since before they sacked Nuno tbh

oh happy fucking day

West Ham have reached an agreement to sign Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.

Maguire made just 16 Premier League appearances last season, with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof preferred in central defence.

£30M seems a good deal for West Ham when you look at some of the prices players are going for. Wouldn't be surprised to see him flourish there.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 20:54 (nine months ago) link

Yeah, he could be a great signing. With Ward Prowse and Alvarez, I think they’ve done really well with the Rice money.

Football Manager legend from a couple years back. Don’t actually much about him irl though.

I really like Villa and how they’ve bought, so naturally I expect something bad to happen, as I don’t trust them to just be a good team.

kane bottling the move to bayern will be hilarious if it happens.

Would be amusing if Bayern don't win the league this year for the first time in 12 seasons
