Parking in NYC

Maybe there was discussion on another thread, but couldn’t find.

So I need to park for three hours. Found a two hour passenger spot and used the ParkNYC app but it seems it won’t let me renew for half an hour after it expires. Maybe I can go put quarters in later, but i still feel that puts me on the radar somehow. Kind of wish I had done that in reverse order. I also see some three hour commercial only spots, although a lot of the cars parked there seem to say PAS on their registration sticker.

Technically you’re not allowed to stay in the same spot beyond the specified maximum parking time. Most enforcement officers let it slide if you keep feeding the meter, but outside my office building they would sometimes make chalk marks on the tires and street to see if the cars were moving.

Yes, exactly, thanks. The app wouldn’t allow me to extend past the max time so I fed the meter with quarters waited a half hour until the blackout ended then renewed again.

How much they look the other way at PAS vehicles parked in Commercial Only spots.

Don't forget! This is unconstitutional: https://www.npr.org/2019/04/23/716248823/court-says-using-chalk-on-tires-for-parking-enforcement-violates-constitution

(Though you probably have better things to do than to bring this up in traffic court.)

Driving in New York should be illegal.
