I know i shoulda posted this several years ago when it was getting ridiculous but now it has become acceptable for headlines like "Euphoria Season Two Is a Whole Vibe"... which tells us nothing! "This thing is a feeling" is lazy writing and it's everywhere.

Wait, I mean my feels
I think the phrase 'is a whole thing' has its uses, that's something I'll concede off the bat. It's a whole thing
― imago, Monday, 10 January 2022 21:38 (two years ago) link
what use is that precisely? couldn't you say, "x is a complicated subject" or "x is zeitgeisty but problematic" and hit roughly the same character count while simultaneously telling me something of value?

It's aesthetic.

It's a tactic to sound similar to a tweet or a conversation with a friend. It probably "resonates" with their target demo

"a whole thing" is a whole thing, used for when a thing is a thing. "a whole vibe" is not really, at most it tells me 'there is some sort of world-building' which is...most cultural artefacts

i think it is ironic and also slightly mocking of gen z as well as euphoria and the, er, vibe the show aims to create. but i also agree w/ you it's not a very good headline bcuz it takes like several layers of ironic understanding to potentially process its meaning

This construction's overuse annoys me too but if any TV show were custom designed to have a "Season is a whole vibe" headline written about it, it would be Euphoria.

Beyond the use of specific slang terms, I think the broader trend is headlines than adopt the casual, dishy style of certain social-media posts (and other forms of online writing). They feel like attempts to establish intimacy, less "This is the way it is" and more "Let me tell you how it is -- and how we're all feeling about it." This is kind of interesting, IMO!
The problem is that that voice can sometimes seem inauthentic or alienating if that's not your...vibe. But I also think it's weird to assume that publications are doing this as a way to be "down with the kids" when a lot of it seems like it's written by millennials for an audience (real or imagined) of other millennials.
"X is a vibe," "low-key obsessed": these are things that actual humans (who don't post on a 21-year-old message board) say to one another.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 11 January 2022 01:51 (two years ago) link
actual humans say all sorts of things to one another; that's poor reasoning behind using meaningless, twitterbaiting, (and yes, i continue to maintain it is entirely possible that a corporation may seek) gen-z virtue signaling as your headline.
i hasten to point out that i am not unfamiliar with the phrase "issa vibe" both from my world of young people and from the grand infinite jukebox which continues to be an umbilicus to the young, whether by means of fivio foreign or nef the pharoah or (the one i prefer) ty dolla with tity boi. I would even go so far as to assert that I have used the phrase myself and unironically! However I'm not writing for a major culture site and I'm just asking for your headlines to mean SOMETHING without resorting to multilayered irony as a delivery service.
Further, i'm not even really picking too much of a fight with this particular example. It's just an overused gambit already and, as noted in OP, I shoulda called this out when the thread idea occurred to me years ago before this euphoric straw broke my resolve.

comedy
A vibe shift is the catchy but sort of too-cool term Monahan uses for a relatively simple idea: In the culture, sometimes things change, and a once-dominant social wavelength starts to feel dated. Monahan, who is 35, breaks down the three vibe shifts he has survived and observed: Hipster/Indie Music (ca. 2003–9), or peak Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, high-waisted Cheap Mondays, Williamsburg, bespoke-cocktail bars; Post-Internet/Techno Revival (ca. 2010–16), or the Blood Orange era, normcore, dressing like The Matrix, Kinfolk the club, not Kinfolk the magazine; and Hypebeast/Woke (ca. 2016–20), or Drake at his Drakest, the Nike SNKRS app, sneaker flipping, virtue signaling, Donald Trump, protests not brunch. You can argue the accuracy of Monahan’s timeline or spend hours over dinner litigating the touch points of each vibe era — it’s kind of fun debating which trend was peaking when, or which was just for white people — but the thing that struck fear into Ellen’s heart was Monahan’s prediction that we were on the cusp of a new vibe shift. It is unnerving because when you really consider it, you can feel people flocking to a new thing. You can see that he’s right; something has shifted.None of this would have been particularly distressing (it’s just how time moves), if not for this paragraph explaining what the flocking looks like:One day everyone was wearing Red Wing boots and partying in warehouses in Williamsburg decorated with twinkling fairy lights. VIBE SHIFT! Everyone started wearing Nike Frees and sweating it out in the club. Now some did not make it through the vibe shift … ‘Why are you all wearing the same sneakers!’ they would plead. ‘Don’t you care about authenticity? What’s with all this sudden interest in branding!’This is to say, not everyone survives a vibe shift. The ones still clinging to authenticity and fairy lights are the ones who crystallized in their hipsterdom while the culture moved on. They “bunkered down in Greenpoint and got married” or took their waxed beards and nautical tattoo sleeves and relocated to Hudson. And by that law, those who survived this shift only to get stuck in, say, Hypebeast/Woke — well, they’ve already moved to Los Angeles to houses that have room to display their sneaker collections worth a small fortune.Unfortunately, I ate this social analysis up with a big-ass spoon. It’s chilling to realize you may be one of the stuck, or if you aren’t, you may be soon. Like Ellen, I haven’t stopped thinking about my own survival odds since.
