Game shows: S & D

I think the 70s on American television was the heyday of the game show, and some my favorite ones come from then. But then, I've seen some great (and much more crazy) ones in Japan too. I haven't seen much of them, so I'll pick "Lets Make a Deal" as my favorite because of how that host gets to play mind tricks, and how excited the audience gets. What's your favorite game show?

search - ben stein, name that tune
destroy - hollywood squares new and old, jokers wild(although wink martindale is the greatest host name of all time), card sharks, tic tac dough

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 15 November 2002 21:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

What the hell?! I was watching Price is Right for the first time in a while and there was no R. Roddy! And no hot playmate action!! Man, even Plinko sucked.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 15 November 2002 21:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

search: three's a crowd (the original, with the man-wife-secretary setup), the gong show, remote control, the late night match game, hollywood squares (paul lynde years only), the whammy cartoons in press your luck, first era of richard dawson family feud

destroy: anything that requires contestants to eat worms or wormlike substances (this includes you, double dare), weakest link, hollywood squares (all non-paul lynde episodes)

I like Beat the Geeks! And Ben Stein.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 15 November 2002 22:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Another vote for Match Game PM, plus the fifties versions of What's My Line?, etc. Where In The World Is Carmen San Diego? also.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 16 November 2002 03:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

except for the Goddamn a cappella act.

S: Ben Stein, Jeopardy, ESPN Two-Minute Drill, Password, $10,000 Pyramid
D: ...Millionaire, Weakest Link, and all the imitators they spawned

Jeff Wright, Saturday, 16 November 2002 04:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, I love Two Minute Drill!
Also Search: Jeopardy & Junkyard Wars (not really a gameshow, though...)

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 16 November 2002 04:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like the $20,000 pyramid, and Match Game PM as well.

I saw too many gameshows when I was young. Anyone remember Whew?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 November 2002 15:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Search: Beat the Geeks, Lingo, Friend or Foe
Destroy: Wheel of Fortune, Millionaire, Card Sharks (worst game show evah??)

Vinnie (vprabhu), Saturday, 16 November 2002 16:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

A couple of friends keep threatening to get me on as a contestant on 'Beat the Geeks' when it comes to music. I dunno, I still think I would get my clock cleaned.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 November 2002 16:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

s: Incredible Games

d: pretty much everything else, with particular on Channel 4 youth programming

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 16 November 2002 17:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Beat the Geeks would be hard for music questions because they don't ask any questions on obscure or rare music. It's all on popular classic rock or something like that. The harder questions don't get more obscure they just get more specific on famous artists.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 16 November 2002 19:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Search: I think we can all agree Jeopardy is class, as is its eccentric cousin Ben Stein.

Destroy: All those god-damned Nickelodeon game shows. I hated those even when I was an uncritical 5-year-old who'd watch just about anything else on that channel.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 17 November 2002 04:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

double dare was a great nickelodeon game show.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 17 November 2002 05:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

I liked all the gambling ones -- Jokers Wild! and a big craps-inspired one where they rolled giant dice. There was also one with a giant pinball machine and each partner in the team played one flipper.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 17 November 2002 05:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't usually like game shows in the same weird way that I don't usually like playing cards. However, there was one episode of Rock & Roll Jeopardy that had CC DeVille on it - and that was pretty entertaining.

Destroy: game shows which seemed to take it all too serious, 321, Going for Gold, Bullseye, the host was always so intense the competitors always looked scared to death.
