lol

I’m really embarrassed to say I never saw this coming. When it was blinding obvious this would be the logical next step. Wow. https://t.co/yUx7nCkafW

Meanwhile in LOTO, senior advisers to Keir Starmer have mulled their next steps if Labour loses the election

They are discussing a proposal for Starmer to stay on for a transitional period of six to 12 months to give the party time to learn from mistakes and elect his successor

KS's *own advisors* are briefing this?

Sir Keir Starmer is to publish a book about Britain under a Labour government, originally written as a private collection of his thoughts, in the face of claims that he has failed to communicate his vision

according to Dodds you need to visit labour.org to find their transformative policies if you are interested in them, but she as party chair doesn't seem willing to talk about them. Such a dreadful interview. If they go into an election campaign empty-handed and give evasive and dismal answers like that, then they will be facing a much worse result than 2019.

calzino, Sunday, 29 May 2022 14:34 (one year ago) link

guaranteed the line will then be "corbyn did even more damage to the party than we'd thought"

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 29 May 2022 14:57 (one year ago) link

they totally fucked it in 2019 and the dignified thing to do was not try blame it all on Miliband as he didn't try and make Brown a scapegoat when he fucked it. But these are some of the most dishonest and vile people in UK politics.

my memory of the mid-70s powercuts is that they were EXCITING

(mum and dad were both war babies and enjoyed being in a pinch plus we lived next to a wood with access to firewood for warmth etc): when i closed up the house after they died i filled a whole large box with candle ends recovered from every room and every drawer, it is seriously a wonder we didn't burn the house down

mark s, Monday, 30 May 2022 10:55 (one year ago) link

yeah there were frequent power cuts at my childhood home too, just due to being a very isolated place - def fun and exciting, the scramble to find candles and such

mark s, Monday, 30 May 2022 11:07 (one year ago) link

The Times article is paywalled but is the gist that millions will face power cuts or millions would face power cuts if they don’t delay plans to turn off coal-fired plants?

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Monday, 30 May 2022 11:08 (one year ago) link

I can just about remember the mid-70's power cuts, along with memories of my mum shutting the curtains and telling me + my brother to keep quiet because the tv licensing van was in the area, which seemed a lot more of a dangerous situation because tv licence guy was an evil baddie. Power cuts were a novelty.

calzino, Monday, 30 May 2022 11:12 (one year ago) link

SV - don't know.

Lots of power cuts when I visited family in India. Can't wait to relive my (also happy) childhood.

There's actually an oil lamp shop round the corner from where I've just moved, seems to sell nothing else! Unfortunately it's only open 2-4 on Saturdays, so I'd imagine queues might be forming from Friday midnight this winter to snaffle the few remaining sources of power available to the nation.

the nation will largely be, as it were, cold lampin'
