i actually grew up... about an hour's drive from the town letterkenny is based on, where plenty of people sounded exactly like these guys (especially mcmurray, my god, i knew some mcmurrays). there's even an episode that NAMES THE TOWN I GREW UP IN which kinda blew my mind
i still kinda sound like this irl sometimes. i haven't lived there for a long time so it's faded but i'll tell you when i first watched this show it came back

i'm not sure i dig the narrowness of the entire story model from the eps i watched a while ago, maybe i should revisit. does the series develop much?
and that "stoic violence" thing is a behavior model that exists but its actual outcomes should be noted.
when i saw the youtube of the ou sooner wr getting his orbital bone shattered and his bro getting utterly destroyed by the mma kids in the bathroom barfight last week, i immed thought of letterkenny style "justice." it is different, because mma kids aren't everywhere. but is it?
― pence's eye juice (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 3 March 2021 16:12 (one year ago) link
depends on what kind of development you’re looking for. there are more characters that get things to do, and there’s some minor evolution of a few characters, but the format remains “this is some stuff that happened to these people” where the stuff changes but the people remain the same
― mh, Wednesday, 3 March 2021 16:15 (one year ago) link
does the series develop much?
I looked up the Wikipedia entry while still watching season one expecting to have to dodge some spoilers and laughed when the description of the nine-season series as a whole could've applied to any episode I'd already seen.
― Stefan Twerkelle (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 March 2021 16:18 (one year ago) link

I used to play pool with some guys at a sorta-rough pool hall and they were all about some ideal bar fight experience where they get into a fistfight with some dude and then buy him a drink afterwards and become friends... then someone got knifed at the pool hall and they stopped talking about it.

heh, i got into and out of this show before the thread started. Enjoyed the first six episodes and felt it ran its course by season 7. Any improvement in the recent ones?

"six seasons"
also "littlekenny" is unwatchable

― mookieproof, Wednesday, 3 March 2021 21:27 (one year ago) link
me and the missus had just started using "pitter patter" as shorthand around the house when we landed on that season and bailed
― G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 March 2021 21:43 (one year ago) link
7 def feels like a step down, wonder if there was some kind of issue w/ writing during covid and they still had to meet a deadline or something. didn't really have any storylines, it felt like. i'm sure they'll get a million more seasons since it's like the only hit crave has i think? hopefully they right course.

it kinda dipped a little since S6 but its an easy watch and there's generally at least one scene per episode that i laugh at. Got plenty of laughs out of s8-9. littlekenny i watched about 30 seconds of and bounced.

think i said some of this in the hulu thread, but to me a comprehensive list of reference points must include:
-king of the hill (rural sensibilities in the modern world! and a lot of sitting around drinking and shooting the shit)-jody hill (slow motion violence with cool songs, also often rural)-kevin smith (most of the characters are written in the author's voice, fondness for hockey)

can't really explain it but just watched the one where shoresy, talking shit the entire time, routs the shamrockettes. which was fine, but then he ends all the chirping with 'short shifts!' and i almost choked

― mookieproof, Sunday, 13 June 2021 19:01 (eleven months ago) link
Some of the episodes where they only sit and crack puns gets a bit much, but every single one of the slow motion fight scenes are hilarious. I kinda like the back and forth with the hockey dudes and skids sometimes more than the regular gang in-front of the vegetable stand.
It is a show where I would like to see more from some of the obscure characters. I liked that they finally had Joint Boy and Tyson get more lines in them working with Stewart to get him ready to fight.
I'd obviously like to see more of Scottie, who keeps bad company with the Ginger and Boots.
I would love to see Cyrus' character from Trailer Park Boys cross over ala Richard Belzer's Munch into Letterkenny, as I think he was funny and I could see that dude building up to one of those beat downs with Cyrus in charge of some degens up to no good.

If you do watch it, tell us how accurate its depiction of it is. I assume there's a bit of exaggeration for comedic effect, but I'd be interested to know just how much of it is exaggerated

I found this thing earlier--the geography at least seems very accurate:
https://letterkenny.fandom.com/wiki/Letterkenny_(location)
I'll try to watch, but just being in and out--I've probably had 50-60 days there this school year--I don't really have any sense of the place. I half-wish I'd stop getting called out there so often: it's an hour's drive. A full day's okay, but I get half-days, too, and they're hardly worth it with the gas.
One line caught my eye from that wiki link: "Since the mid-2000s, various outsiders have characterized Perth County, Huron County, Oxford County, or various other locations in southwestern Ontario as the "crystal meth capital" of the province." I do encounter some strange kids up there.
