Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 24 November 2020 23:54 (three years ago) link

Do I have to like him?

I expect he'll do less damage than the last 4 presidents, and then we're onto Gen X leaders (many, admittedly, worse).

Human civilization could very well collapse later this century. Maybe 2 of the presidential candidates understood the gravity of this moment. Biden wasn't one of them.

Dan S, Wednesday, 25 November 2020 00:52 (three years ago) link

He’s the guy who beat Donald Trump. I do not have to give a shit about what he has to say nor will I have to see his dumb fucking face every time I turn on the news, unless it’s to talk about what a loser he is. He was probably the last guy I wanted to win the primary (outside of Bloomberg obviously) but he defeated Trump so I’ll always like him much in the same way I’ll always like that dipshit named Brett Favre

The ability to project likeability is a valuable political skill, but most often it's irrelevant. LBJ and Nixon were real bastards. People did not like either of them much at all. But LBJ signed Medicare, the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, the Wilderness Act and many other progressive bills. otoh, Reagan's immense likeability was ultimately a disaster for the nation.

Biden isn't as good at projecting likeability as he was when younger. It will decrease as the job wears him down, but won't matter much to his results.

Respectfully Yours, (Aimless), Wednesday, 25 November 2020 01:08 (three years ago) link

I don't think the ability to project likability is irrelevant, and I think he is better at projecting it more now than he ever was

Dan S, Wednesday, 25 November 2020 01:41 (three years ago) link

I didn’t want him to run and he’s not as progressive on certain things as I would like but he absolutely owns for having won the presidency via his good empathetic campaign and surviving grotesque smears that were indicative of the worst of us.

Hey, what's not to like about a guy with multiple sexual misconduct allegations who played a leading role in ruining (or ending) millions of lives via mass incarceration and Iraq? He's still got that twinkle in his eye.

Those other accusations were never framed in sexual predatory terms by the accusers. His handsiness was more of a generational working class Irish catholic thing (important to note that he’s similarly grab-y with other old guy senators) that nevertheless was right to call out but people who characterized it in “predatory” terms were either genuinely coming from a millennial mores mindset or just bring cynically opportunistic.

Also when you look into it you start to find that every serious person who has followed u.s. immigration policy absolutely hates the “they both caged kids” equivalency.

I am not sure this is necessarily the case, but accepting as true the narrow issue of family separation, certainly in a broader sense he bears some responsibility for the administration’s indefensible deportation record, something he has acknowledged as I recall

as for my feelings about biden I generally try to avoid having strongly positive feelings about politicians, men in particular, and he has enough awful stuff on his record for me to say that I’m happy he won but still dislike him

the best presidential candidate in at least four years

I only assumed that Jorgenson sucks without looking further into it, but Hawkins' platform was more convincing than Biden's.

huge rant (sic), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 01:22 (three years ago) link

then again the GOP 2020 platform was hard to argue against, tbh

For the past 8 years America has been led in the wrong direction. Our economy has become unnecessarily weak with stagnant wages. People living paycheck to paycheck are struggling, sacrificing, and suffering.

Americans(') standing in world affairs has declined significantly — our enemies no longer fear us and our friends no long trust us.

The men and women of our military have been shortchanged in numbers, equipment, and benefits by a Commander in Chief who treats the Armed Forces and our veterans as a necessary inconvenience.

The President (has) dismantled Americans’ system of healthcare. They have replaced it with a costly and complicated scheme that limits choices and takes away our freedom. The President (has) abandoned their promise of being accountable to the American people.

huge rant (sic), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 01:23 (three years ago) link

Gloria La Riva was the best candidate, but y'know.
