Get a good director with a good crew and let them cook who knew

At this point I can't imagine there are any illusions about what a director's getting themselves into.

Right? I'm sure it will help her finance one or two more pet projects, although I'm sure the Oscars will also help relieve that particular pressure.

i should be clear that's a not a knock and an oscar still greases the skids for whatever she wants to do next!

(cf megan ellison. there are plenty of people born on third base who don't have multiple oscar noms in their dossier)

Another thoughtful Charles Pulliam-Moore consideration, talking about many different recent series/films as well:

https://io9.gizmodo.com/racism-is-how-you-get-shows-like-the-falcon-and-the-wi-1846791627

IIRC the making-of for the series is running now.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 1 May 2021 00:04 (two years ago) link

I thought the ending was a disappointment, particularly given the Zemo speech about heroic supremacy, and the idea of Captain America as the bloodied face of empire.

Basically two years of release dates:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdpxoFcdORI

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 3 May 2021 15:09 (two years ago) link

Black Widow’s release date was changed from May 7 to July 9, 2021 back in March. It’ll be shown in both theaters and Disney+.
Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings is coming out on September 23, 2021.
The Eternals, directed by recent Oscar winner Chloe Zhao, will premiere on November 5, 2021.
Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres on December 17, 2021. It’s sooner than the date in the original teaser, which mentioned it’d be coming on Christmas.
As previously announced, Thor: Love And Thunder premieres on February 11, 2022.
Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse Of Madness premieres on March 25, 2022. It was originally slated for November 6, 2020.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is still keeping the previously announced date of July 8, 2022. We still don’t have word on how the story continues after the death of Chadwick Boseman, so it’s a big surprise that it’s slated to come out next year. It’s especially interesting, considering Marvel Studios had no plans of digitally having the late actor reprise the role.
The Marvels premieres on November 11, 2022.
Paul Rudd reprises his role as Ant-Man in Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania, which premieres February 17, 2023.
The James Gunn-directed Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol. 3 premieres May 5, 2023.

Plus a blink and you'll miss it tease of Fantastic Four thrown in four good measure.

I fundamentally disagree with that Pulliam-Moore piece’s conclusions about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier but a large part of that disagreement comes from passing familiarity with the source material. I think he 100% misread the US Agent origin story and I don’t know what Isaiah Bradley would have done in a more expanded role in the story other than add more Black suffering, which he’s already criticizing in the piece. Most of the criticism seems to be “none of these are as good as Get Out” which… okay? I agree, but also Get Out is a superlative piece of work that is better than most other movies and TV shows, so that doesn’t bother me.

Ah, okay, I thought The Marvels was something new but I guess it's just the updated title for the Captain Marvel sequel (apparently also featuring Monica Rambeau and, based on the typography of the title, possibly also Kamala Khan?).

That video did the trick of getting me hyped to see these in the theater. Guy Debord would be proud.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Monday, 3 May 2021 15:24 (two years ago) link

Oh, The Marvels is the new title for Captain Marvel 2, was wondering what that was before I watched the promo.

I thought so, too. Which I think partly hinges on his not knowing who JLD is supposed to be.

She doesn't read as "good guy" regardless of context so it's weird that it would be interpreted that the whole deal Walker is signing up for is meant to be thought of as heroic

80's hair metal , and good praise music ! (DJP), Monday, 3 May 2021 15:38 (two years ago) link

So the plan foe the next two years is three new properties up front and then SEVEN sequels?

Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Monday, 3 May 2021 15:38 (two years ago) link

More like two, since I wouldn't consider a Black Widow spin-off a "new property".

But lots of chances to introduce new characters and significant twists to the MCU (female Thor, Ms Marvel, to name just a few), so I don't think it's all that bleak.

fyi, you're in the MCU thread

rob, Monday, 3 May 2021 15:42 (two years ago) link

broadly, every movie since The Incredible Hulk has been a sequel

also—do correct me if I'm wrong here, I'm no expert—but aren't the "new characters and significant twists" all taken from pre-existing comics storylines?

rob, Monday, 3 May 2021 15:45 (two years ago) link

As far as what's been (un)officially announced, yes.

Is the new Loki series based on a comic?

rob, Monday, 3 May 2021 15:47 (two years ago) link

There have been Loki comics but the plotline of the show looks like its own thing, built around his new status in the MCU.

I just watched episode 3 of F&WS, and what I found distracting to the point of ruining my enjoyment was the fact that Madripoor is supposed to be "In the Indonesian islands", yet every character was wearing like knee length trenchcoats and black leather onesies the whole time.

chap, Saturday, 8 May 2021 15:21 (two years ago) link

One was wearing a fur coat! In Indonesia!

chap, Saturday, 8 May 2021 15:23 (two years ago) link

I mean if we're talking about wearing something 'cool-looking' in a climate not suited for it, that ship sailed a loooong time ago:

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ncd4b5d_cM0/maxresdefault.jpg

But Roz's statements upthread (or was it Twitter?) about the whole choppiness of the Madripoor depiction are worth noting.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 8 May 2021 16:29 (two years ago) link

for the non-Marvel Zombies among you, Madripoor in the comics dates back to Claremont's mutant runs (most heavily in Wolverine's first solo book in the 90's) and was basically a blend of Caniff's "yellow peril" piers of Asian iniquity, Casablanca, Jabba's Palace and Blade Runner's LA. They probably shouldn't have gone to the well for this as source material in the first place as it is impossibly outdated and inherently problematic.

I am amused that thanks to Coronavirus, Phase 4 will feature a few years with 4 films, much as the previous phases had 1-, 2- and 3-film years.

Can I axe you people something? Why is Spider-man even called Spider-man? I get that he was bit by a radioactive spider, but his only powers or features that have anything to do with spiders (the web shooters) also have nothing to do with being bit, they're just tech devices that anyone could use. But his other powers - like sticking to walls, his so-called "spider-sense" (aka a heightened nervous response, agility, strength, etc. - are not unique to spiders. Whereas some of the things that *are* unique to spiders, like eight legs, or sucking the life out of prey, or poison or whatever, are *not* powers he has. I mean, Ant-man can shrink to the size of an ant and talk to ants, the Falcon has wings, Dr. Oc has multiple arms, Rhino dresses like a rhino, and so on, they're all pretty literal minded. But Spider-man? It's a pretty confusing moniker. They should probably change it.

Josh.

Nhex, Monday, 10 May 2021 19:47 (two years ago) link

why isn't Ant-Man called Gecko-Man at moments when he has only shrunk to the size of a gecko

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Monday, 10 May 2021 19:49 (two years ago) link

Maybe he's just been different sizes of geckos all along. Also, he can't stick to things like geckos.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 May 2021 19:50 (two years ago) link

But, like, if Ant-Man developed tech that let him stick to things, then sure, he could be Gecko-Man.

I lolled.

He's Spider-Man because his spider-centric powers were triggered by a bite from a radioactive spider. For a more detailed explanation, consult the works of J. Michael Straczynski but don't say that you weren't warned. Once you come across the term 'spider totem' you might not be able to crawl back out of the rabbit hole.

Slime Goobody (Old Lunch), Monday, 10 May 2021 19:59 (two years ago) link

But he doesn't really have any spider-centric powers! He has kind of generic bug/insect powers, but the only really spider-y thing about him is the web slingers, and those did not come from the spider bite.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 May 2021 20:06 (two years ago) link

Has there ever been a Spider-man that wrapped baddies up in webs and then drained the life out of them with their fangs? There should be.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 May 2021 20:07 (two years ago) link

I think some of the movies actually had him generating webs from his body, from (I guess) glands on his wrists.

DJI, Monday, 10 May 2021 20:43 (two years ago) link

I mean, when you think about it, how "incredible" really is the Hulk after all? Wouldn't you say he's more "grotesque", in the "comically distorted" meaning?
