Just to backtrack for a sec, I can't help but laugh at the Trump troll army's attempt to reframe the Proud Boys segment as a clear condemnation on the God Emperor's part:

It's such a head trip that people are saying he didn't condemn the proud boys by name. You can go rewatch that part of the debate for yourself or read the transcripts of it.

In the chain of events Trump unequivocally agreed with Biden that proud boys are a right-wing hate group and he even gave warning for everyone watching and listening to "stand back and stand by" for what his administration is going to do to them.

It takes some seriously dishonest mental gymnastics to claim otherwise. His mistake was not coming to a full stop right then and there to let it simmer and cook with the public. But he kept chasing the carrot and started going after left-winged radicals and left-winged hate-America groups (or non-groups if you prefer) like antifa.

Biden's team wants him to debate again, but I think he'd be better off cruising around on a No Malarkey whistlestop trip. Maybe on a train. Seriously.

I just don't see what there is to gain. Who are the upcoming moderators? Who cares? We know exactly how Trump will behave. And if they cut his mic he will storm over and use someone else's mic. Though I wonder if it would help him or hurt him to just storm out.

I guess it depends what his goals are.

Like Alfred said upthread, second and third debates are less important, so the optics are better if he agrees to a rematch with Orangina.

These debate are like watching the shittiest sitcom ever, then demanding a Christmas special and movie.

And then going to see the movie in a virtually empty theatre in the middle of a pandemic, and sitting next to the only unoccupied seat, a guy eating his food loudly while talking on a cell phone without a mask.

I guess Trump's debate coaches were Chris Christie and Rowdy Rudy... how'd that work out?
