are there not biryani carts in scotland and, if not, where does one find flashy crawls ? xp

I don't know what a biryani cart is or a flashy crawl.

Getting mild Hara-Kiri/Charlie Hebdo vibes from what little I've seen of Viz so far.

pomenitul, Sunday, 24 May 2020 14:03 (three years ago) link

Nah it's much sillier than Charlie Hebdo.

Is Lou Reed a Good Singer? (Tom D.), Sunday, 24 May 2020 14:05 (three years ago) link

Fwiw I have no idea what a biryani cart or a flash crawl is either and I've spent most of my life in Canada.

budo jeru, Sunday, 24 May 2020 14:07 (three years ago) link

It's confusing for me too as I (probably wrongheadedly) assume Indian food = UK, and I have also never heard of such a thing.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 24 May 2020 14:08 (three years ago) link

Ah, thanks, I see now. Food trucks were banned in Montreal until 2013 so this stuff is still vaguely exotic to me.

calstars, Sunday, 24 May 2020 14:33 (three years ago) link

This one hasn't been updated in a long time but it still haunts my thoughts, down to its misspelling of 'Monsieur':

Oh, Monseur le Fopp, you are really spoiling us...

pomenitul, Sunday, 24 May 2020 14:36 (three years ago) link

that Charlie Hebdo/Viz comparison wasn't that far off the mark when you look back at The Thieving Gypsy Bastards debacle (in the 90's I think) and the piss-take of an apology they issued afterwards. I think they were annoyed to have to apologise to Romani Gypsies when they were basing the cartoon on Irish Travellers not Romani, like as if that made it acceptable. There are deffo some wankers involved with Viz who shouldn't be proud of that part of the comic's history.

calzino, Sunday, 24 May 2020 15:05 (three years ago) link

Charlie Hebdo is best known for its politically charged material in the English-speaking world but many of their comics consist of gratuitously puerile butt, dick and tit jokes. This is even more apparent when you skim through issues of Hara-Kiri. Anyway, it’s what I had in mind when I made the comparison.

pomenitul, Sunday, 24 May 2020 15:14 (three years ago) link

some of the later period viz is bit more subtle and interesting and some of my fave stuff isn't the puerile stuff, but more the material that parodies old British comics in a very witty manner. That's the stuff that makes still check out a new issue occasionally.

calzino, Sunday, 24 May 2020 15:21 (three years ago) link

The bits of Viz I have least time for are the John Fardell strips (Modern Parents, The Critics, Ferdinand The Foodie, etc.) - too much flogging of boring political correctness tropes, not nearly enough puerile humour.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 24 May 2020 15:37 (three years ago) link

I like Gilbert Ratchet a lot which contains some quite fun violence, and some of the one offs that are often parodies of stodgy old brit comics. Yeah the Private Eye style stuff is pretty weak piss.

calzino, Sunday, 24 May 2020 15:43 (three years ago) link

Is there much of that? I haven't read it in years, mind you, so it's still the Vibrating Bum-faced Goats/ Bears of Murder etc to me.

Is Lou Reed a Good Singer? (Tom D.), Sunday, 24 May 2020 15:45 (three years ago) link

tbh I've probably bought it about half dozen times in the last ten years, but still occasionally look up old classics online.

why late at night in the u.s. does ilm get all yessed out

Assumed for the longest time that this was an inexplicable assertion that the vibe of ILM became super positive late at night, eventually clicked through and discovered that it was in reference to the band Yes and yet the thread title somehow became no more explicable to me. Nevertheless, I've happily adopted the phrase 'all yessed out' into my everyday vernacular.

re. Viz, Drunken Bakers is up there with some of the greatest comics of all time

Neil S, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 15:41 (three years ago) link

i think of Drunken Bakers as another league altogether.

Top Tips used to be better but it's still occasionally fantastic

In general I feel like Viz is slightly more mean-spirited than it used to be - not all the time, but sometimes - but maybe it's me that's changed

Yeah too lazy to click now but someone pretty early said "kip?" and they were not answered afaik. I briefly scrolled up and down and up then I experienced that special little feeling of boredom and exhaustion every time I begin to consider researching ilx vernacular so I moved on.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 21:25 (three years ago) link

where's deems?

I did a search on his most recent posts. he last posted on May 18. the day before he did post something moderately troubling on the "rona moved in" thread:
