Orange soda for adults. When I traveled to Italy, this is what all the American tourists were drinking.

fuckin huge classic

also big into an americano when its going

kim rong un (darraghmac), Thursday, 30 April 2020 22:56 (two months ago) link

good drink.

very overexposed drink at this stage but I do not eschew comestible things due to popularity

COVID and the Gang (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 30 April 2020 22:57 (two months ago) link

It's fine, too mild for my taste. I use Aperol these days to bolster other, sourer amaros like Cynar, Ramazzotti, and Averna.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 30 April 2020 22:59 (two months ago) link

I prefer just having an amaro and soda generally I suppose. and I will usually go for cynar or montenegro which are my favourites of the ones that are commonly available in bars where am. that's for the amari thread I guess tho

COVID and the Gang (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 30 April 2020 23:02 (two months ago) link

I'm at this moment sipping an negroni comprising Cynar, Aviation gin, a drizzle of Luxardo Maraschino, and sweet vermouth.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 30 April 2020 23:05 (two months ago) link

classic but i prefer aperol with just soda or prosecco by itself.

Yerac, Thursday, 30 April 2020 23:09 (two months ago) link

and lots of ice

kim rong un (darraghmac), Thursday, 30 April 2020 23:09 (two months ago) link

Totally acceptable refreshing drink imo. Not sure why the bad rep

For fans of Aperol, I highly recommend a Paper Plane: a variation on a Corpse Reviver, with .75 each of Bourbon, Aperol, Lemon, and Amaro Nonino. Fantastic.

Fetch the Bolt Thrower (PBKR), Thursday, 30 April 2020 23:41 (two months ago) link

the paper plane recipe sounds good

this thread reminds me that I’ve enjoyed sharing aperol spritzs with friends at sunset on the dock of a rural lake I visit every summer, and that I will probably not get to experience that this summer for the first time in more than 10 years

Dan S, Thursday, 30 April 2020 23:46 (two months ago) link

I like a spritz but prefer it with Campari because that it more bitter and has more bite. There’s always a choice between Aperol and Campari in Italy. They are both made by the Campari company and marketed together in Italy but only the aperol version seems to get the push outside of Italy.

Easy enough to ask a bar tender anywhere to make it with Campari so it’s no biggie.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 1 May 2020 00:03 (two months ago) link

people tend to make it not cold enough and with shitty prosecco so everything is warm and sticky sweet.

Yerac, Friday, 1 May 2020 00:39 (two months ago) link

they're great. they're context dependent. when i was sitting on a terrace in milan at 4 pm it was absolutely the right drink for that place and time. but i haven't really had a craving for one since then.

call all destroyer, Friday, 1 May 2020 00:55 (two months ago) link

anyone here ever had Bitterol? that was my great regret in Europe, that I didn't buy it when I saw it for cheap in a supermarket

xp it definitely seems like a warm weather experience

Got a grapefruit? Make it a Grand Street.

jaymc, Friday, 1 May 2020 03:45 (two months ago) link

Oops, I meant to link this instead, which is the recipe I use. I also just realized that it's Punt e Mes and not ordinary sweet vermouth, but I'm sure it'd be good with whatever.

jaymc, Friday, 1 May 2020 03:47 (two months ago) link

Anyway, I like spritzes a lot, but agree that more bitter amari make them more interesting.

still great but

megan thee macallan 18 year (||||||||), Friday, 1 May 2020 10:06 (two months ago) link

Campari is also Tory Tizer do not @ me.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 May 2020 10:11 (two months ago) link

Aperol Spritz is fine when you're on holiday and it's a blazing hot early evening but I can't imagine either ordering or making one in this country. Subbing out the Campari for Aperol in a negroni on a hot day is beyond classic.

Paper Plane >>>> any other drink on this thread.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 May 2020 10:13 (two months ago) link

Subbing it in for simple syrup in an Old Fashioned is also classic if you whack some orange bitters in there as well.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 May 2020 10:17 (two months ago) link

Paper Plane is the first thing I made when I found Nonino and looked up cocktails that used it. Top drink.

Coincidentally saw this thread last night as we were making aperol spritzes, first of the year. With the addition of some homemade ginger syrup.

The NYT published a hot take last year titled "The Aperol Spritz Is Not a Good Drink":

jaymc, Friday, 1 May 2020 14:37 (two months ago) link

I'll drink one if offered but that fishbowl-sized goblet has always bugged me. Serve it in a regular tumbler like a Negroni.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 1 May 2020 14:38 (two months ago) link

Highball glass, IMO

jaymc, Friday, 1 May 2020 14:40 (two months ago) link

oh i remember when that nyt article came out and it was controversial. I agree with it though. aperol spritzes can be good but they got trashed down like mimosas.

Yerac, Friday, 1 May 2020 14:43 (two months ago) link

articles like that aren't wrong but they crack me up. who the fuck is opening a $30 bottle of pet nat to make a spritz?

call all destroyer, Friday, 1 May 2020 14:47 (two months ago) link

yeah i don't know why they went with pet nat. They should've just stuck with make sure the sparkling wine bottle says nature or brut.

Yerac, Friday, 1 May 2020 14:51 (two months ago) link

ah, she wrote a book about apertifs.

Yerac, Friday, 1 May 2020 14:55 (two months ago) link

Tastes like Irn Bru, not a patch on Campari.

fetter, Friday, 1 May 2020 14:57 (two months ago) link

I just ordered a bottle of campari because of this thread, to mix things up.

Campari and aperol are so much cheaper in chile than the US. ~$10-12 a bottle.

Yerac, Friday, 1 May 2020 16:08 (two months ago) link

so the Take 3 wasn't bad! I'm glad I drank it now -- it doesn't strike me as a late evening drink.

the new york times is not a good newspaper

megan thee macallan 18 year (||||||||), Friday, 1 May 2020 16:24 (two months ago) link

classic when you're in Italy and they're c. €5

dud when you're in Dublin and they're €10+

Number None, Friday, 1 May 2020 16:58 (two months ago) link

in Venice you should drink Spriss, Wine Aperol/campari and soda. Should cost €0.50 at most.

megan thee macallan 18 year (||||||||), Friday, 1 May 2020 17:01 (two months ago) link

the best thing i drank in venice was probably sparkling wine on tap, €2 a glass. served with big basket of cheap potato chips.

call all destroyer, Friday, 1 May 2020 17:13 (two months ago) link

similarly, the best thing I ate in Italy was a small bowl of assorted olives, probably €3

epicenter of the fieri universe (sleeve), Friday, 1 May 2020 18:02 (two months ago) link

The best thing I ate in Italy was a small piece of bread, slightly toasted. They served it for free.

Did the Aperol Spritz help kill the crap-cider-and-ice market? That shit was everywhere a decade ago.
