oops lol sorry so it is, speedreading by me there to drive home a slightly false point

I'd quibble with his breakout role, he was (scowly and cocknee) in Snatch, a movie so widely-beloved its director was later awarded the hand of Madonna.
― Andrew Farrell, Friday, 31 January 2020 11:31 (four years ago) link
I'd grade him as only slightly similarly 3rd rate and loathsome as Shane Meadows (who made him) and Paddy Considine, although I despise the latter two and all his awful movies (more of a last decade beef) much more than him. Lol I complain about too many posh actors and when some regional oafs make a success of themselves and I fucking hate them as well! His American accent is probably the finest since Dexter Fletcher in Press Gang/Bugsy Malone.
― calzino, Friday, 31 January 2020 11:34 (four years ago) link
watching him last night as taff in THE WHITE HOUSE FARM MURDERS, furiously bellowing at an underling who (correctly) thinks taff's theory of the murder is wrong, made me wonder quite a lot abt how actors feel abt one another in the moments after such exchanges: can you just switch the raging testosterone off and immediately chuckle together, or do you have to go away for a bit and calm down and stop shaking before you talk technique and line-readings?
― mark s, Friday, 31 January 2020 11:34 (four years ago) link
I used to enjoy his work before he melted

My uncle used to live in Kirkby, it's originally an (unofficial) new town for re-housing people from the slums, therefore it's as scouse as Liverpool, if not more so (my family are from Speke which was originally the middle-class version of this, lolz) - think I'm safe in saying he is in no sense considered a wool.
― Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 31 January 2020 11:36 (four years ago) link
no woolly-back but his accents are like knitting and driving!
― calzino, Friday, 31 January 2020 11:41 (four years ago) link
He's p funny as Billy Bremner in the film of the Dammed United:

His accent isn't great in that.

snatch, boardwalk empire, tinker tailor, irishman
yeah i like this guy, he has a bit of range but flings himself with a bit of guts into whatever he's at

He was remarkable in The Virtues last year and depicted the most convincing and intense alcoholic binging session I've ever seen on film. Felt hungover myself after watching it.
came here to post this but couldn't remember the name of the show.
― fetter, Friday, 31 January 2020 12:44 (four years ago) link
He was excellent in the otherwise rather disappointing fifth season of Line of Duty too.

snatch was 6 full years before this is england and these are the films SG was in in the interim:
Blow Dry (as photographer) The Last Minute (as DJ Banana)Revengers Tragedy (as Officer)Gangs of New York (as Shang)American Cousins (as Henry)Without You (short film, as Billy)The I Inside (as Travis)Pit Fighter (as Harry)Goal! (as Des) Scummy Man (short film, as George)
so while snatch was indeed his first big movie it evidently *wasn't* his break-out moment (after this is england he was nommed for british independent film award for best supporting actor)
― mark s, Saturday, 1 February 2020 12:05 (four years ago) link
gangs of new york was big (also bad not good) and i assume scorsese's casting guys saw SG in snatch but come on
― mark s, Saturday, 1 February 2020 12:12 (four years ago) link
I can't remember him in that sprawling snoozefest but last time I watched was in the cinema, never want to see it again!

he goes into pure scouse at one point (in prison with hoffa) in the irishman, it's hilarious.
― Fizzles, Saturday, 1 February 2020 12:42 (four years ago) link
The story of him smacking the ice-cream out of Pacino’s hand off-the-cuff, unrehearsed, had me grinning. He’s great in The Irishman imo yeah.

how does acting not just turn into a big fight on-set?

the "welsh" in e3 of WHITE HOUSE FARM MURDERS is er wayward shall we say
― mark s, Saturday, 1 February 2020 16:55 (four years ago) link
six eps in and the welsh never got better
(taff has been put on administrative leave for being a dick and possibly also for being bad at his own accent)

Six eps? It took them less time than that to catch the cunt

― omar little, Friday, 14 February 2020 01:13 (four years ago) link
I don’t even mean that as an insult it’s just that for example in that scene where he first sits down across from Hoffa in the prison cafeteria he reminded me of Susie getting increasingly agitated at midge in the deli
― omar little, Friday, 14 February 2020 01:15 (four years ago) link
He’s fantastic in the Irishman I think

role was amalgamated so graham may have been playing sam collins actually iirc

i guess i shd write up my irishman appreciation on the appropriate thread (tl;dr: it's good not bad) -- meanwhile my theory of scorsese and stephen graham is that he hired him to ensure pacino stays measured, knowing that if ap starts creeping into the "GREAT ASS!" reds marty can unleash an actualy louder and noisier yelling-machine that gets to maximum redface much quicker lol. this is how caring works comments are closed
i was watching irishman after the early eps of white house farm murders so the badness of the welsh accent slightly filtered over into my appreciation of tony pro as a plausible italian-american
― mark s, Friday, 14 February 2020 10:37 (four years ago) link
I suppose he's ok in The Irishman, but it's Pacino who is the weak link in that otherwise class movie.

Ray Winstone as English yelling-machine keeping Nicholson in check in The Departed?
Lack of English yelling-machine keeping Day Lewis in check in Gangs of New York one of many reasons that is bad not good
― Ward Fowler, Friday, 14 February 2020 11:01 (four years ago) link
I think from 90's onward Pacino seems very overindulged and his acting is mostly bombastic, overrated, hammy .. he really gets on my tits!
