This is just his totally grownup response to Xi calling it the American virus.

aiui, Xi was himself responding to american attempts to call it "Wuhan virus"

whatever. the problem is people of Asian descent are being attacked (two separate stabbings in Montreal yesterday)

rob, Thursday, 19 March 2020 18:51 (one year ago) link

In French, syphilis used to be called 'le mal de Naples' (the Neapolitan illness) while in Italian it was dubbed 'il mal francese' (the French illness). Nothing new, really.

Btw only one of the stabbing victims was Korean:

Not that it makes it any better, of course.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 19 March 2020 19:01 (one year ago) link

nothing new except it's hundreds of years later, and we should know better

Karl Malone, Thursday, 19 March 2020 19:02 (one year ago) link

pom, thanks for the correction (I'd read the previous version of the story). And yes I'm aware of those historical precedents, plus I've read some interesting stuff about the circumstances around the naming of the "Spanish flu" in 1918

But what gets me about this is that trying to rename it "chinese virus" is *not* the result of some widespread misattribution or broadly dispersed bigotry--it's top of mind for this loathsome shitstain

rob, Thursday, 19 March 2020 19:13 (one year ago) link

yep, it is a rebranding campaign, and he's already got fox news onboard (is it that they got HIM onboard? there's hardly a distinction between the two)

As long as his army of alt-right trolls is ready to pull the trigger whenever someone calls him racist by pointing out that CHiNa IsN't a RaCe, he's a totally normal president.

This article embedded from the 2014 picture was worth revisiting:

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2014/11/mindsuckers/

If the power of a gene can extend to manipulation of the physical world, Dawkins wondered, could it not extend as well to the manipulation of another living creature? Dawkins argued that it could, and he pointed to parasites as his prime example. The ability of a parasite to control the behavior of a host is encoded in its genes. If one of those genes mutated, the hostโ€™s behavior would change.
Picture of a bullfrog's limbs affected by flatworm larvae

Depending on how it changed, the mutation might help or harm the parasite. If a flu virus mutates so that its victims lock themselves away and starve to death, the virus will be unlikely to spread to other hosts, and it will disappear from the population of viruses. A mutation in a parasite that influences a hostโ€™s behavior for the better will become more common. If a wasp acquires a mutation that compels its ladybug host to begin to act as a bodyguard, for example, its offspring carrying that trait will thrive, because fewer of them will be killed by predators.

ha, yes, it's in the linked article:

"The cadaver was supposed to be anonymous, but when the press found out that the first Visible Human was an executed convict in Texas..."

(i think i remember reading it in Wired at the time, ~1993. oh, https://www.wired.com/1995/05/digital-dead-man/)
