eight hour miniseries where people just talk about the political relationship between the Jedi order and the government of the Republic

iirc they already did this

oops never mind

Jumping back to the conversation about season 3, the post this morning on the official Star Wars Instagram account strongly implies Book of Boba Fett is a wholly unique series and there will still be a Mandalorian season 3 next fall as well.

To be clear, the Instagram post doesn’t imply anything about Mandalorian, but rather officially announced Book of Boba Fett as its own show.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 21 December 2020 13:55 (three years ago) link

Would be a strange decision if they drop The Mandalorian after two seasons and they ask audiences to forget Baby Yogurt et al. Then again...attention spans are easily satisfied with new and everchanging content nowadays and Disney are gazillionaires, not me. Whadda I know?

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 21 December 2020 14:12 (three years ago) link

Mandalorian S3 already confirmed isn't it?

groovypanda, Monday, 21 December 2020 14:16 (three years ago) link

Is it? Guess I missed the news! Never mind.

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 21 December 2020 14:22 (three years ago) link

Yeah, according to IMDb there’s a season 3, thought it was announced already.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 21 December 2020 14:25 (three years ago) link

I assumed the Boba Fett thing was season 3. We'll know soon enough I guess.

silverfish, Monday, 21 December 2020 16:46 (three years ago) link

Favreau clarified it on Good Morning America today -- The Book of Boba Fett is a separate series, and production on S3 of Mandalorian follow after they're done with production on this new one. So third season will be sometime in 2022.

People disappointed with the finale: what other possibility was there once the baby cast Jedi summon?

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 21 December 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

I’d go beyond that, even – what other possibility was there from the beginning (other than neverending Lone Wolf & Cubbing)?

good karma, my aesthetic (morrisp), Monday, 21 December 2020 17:03 (three years ago) link

Well there was a part of me that did very much want that neverending-until-it-did arc just because I loved the sweet dynamic between the two. The small moments throughout both seasons are pretty amazing, but in turn that helped sell the parting all the more.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 21 December 2020 17:05 (three years ago) link

the darksaber stuff made me think we were headed for darksaber-powered-up mando kills the troopers. season ends with mando healing in a hospital. The doctor just got blood test lab results -- mandochlorians! mando trains Grogu himself.

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 21 December 2020 17:12 (three years ago) link

Yes i guess they could have held this off a year. Thanks above for clearing up the Mando vs Boba shows. What's next for Mando, go and become king of Mandalore?

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 21 December 2020 17:13 (three years ago) link

Mandochlorians! Yeah ok screw you, Luke!

season 3: The Mandalorian Jedi

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 21 December 2020 17:15 (three years ago) link

What's next for Mando, go and become king of Mandalore?

Well if you want to go really dark(saber), note that the Boba Fett teaser demonstrates that 1) Fennec got off the ship meaning 2) Boba came back to get her. Ergo, once the debt had been paid because the Mandalorian got the Child again (and then immediately gave him away), Fennec killed everyone else just standing around on the bridge with a thermal detonator and scooped up the darksaber and went off to do crimes with Boba Fett. Perhaps I am wrong.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 21 December 2020 17:19 (three years ago) link

Re: The Book of Boba Fett

The series will be executive produced by Favreau and Dave Filoni, along with helmer Robert Rodriguez, who directed the thrilling Chapter 14 (“The Tragedy”) episode in season 2.

Oh noes

Fett will walk right back into a sarlacc pit, like mando and that force shield

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 21 December 2020 17:32 (three years ago) link

That actually happened in an old comic!

what other possibility was there once the baby cast Jedi summon?

baby yoda is the DARK JEDI foretold as too powerful to handle his powers and the jedi must put him down rather than let him live and now Mando and grogurt are on the run from everyone is how i break it down to an extent

i dunno, i'm not emotionally engaged with the Mandalorian. it was a good time! maybe they'll do something okay with it in a year! in the meantime, there's literally a half dozen shows based on this general formula on the way so I'll try each of them once or twice to see if there's any juice left in that orange.

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 21 December 2020 18:40 (three years ago) link

you were looking for the Mandarinian

extra pulp

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:06 (three years ago) link

that Dark Jedi idea could still work!

Are any of the announced shows a more predictable place to show Luke's story from here to his life of despair on an Irish rock?

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:06 (three years ago) link

I don’t think so

good karma, my aesthetic (morrisp), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:11 (three years ago) link

otoh the state of his face probably means we're not seeing much more of him on Disney+ anytime soon

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:18 (three years ago) link

I really wonder whether de-aging deep fake tech will ever get past the point where we say “oh, weeeiiirrrrd” every time we see it

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:20 (three years ago) link

Wild hey. Could it have been better if they shot with Hamill and de-aged him with makeup and computers? That's a thing isn't it? I thought the main reason for the Rogue One stuff was cuz those actors had passed

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:27 (three years ago) link

once the baby cast Jedi summon

i thot grodo didn't want nothing to do with none of them jedis, i figured he was just tryna catch up on his holosnapchats

I think the weirdest part to me was that his lips just barely moved? Did he take a shot in the face in Return of the Jedi?

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:28 (three years ago) link

xp Probably he got lots of stuff done

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:29 (three years ago) link

my kid at approx age 11 sat through all of rogue one without noting anything about faux Cushing, maybe if you know they’re based on real old/dead people it’s insurmountably weird but otherwise fine?

the least famous person you were surprised to discover (emsworth), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:31 (three years ago) link

Cushing easily the best one so far though.

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:32 (three years ago) link

maybe if you know they’re based on real old/dead people it’s insurmountably weird but otherwise fine?

Yeah that’s probably a huge part of it

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:34 (three years ago) link

faux Cushing was surely a little uncanny valley but mando luke was obviously done on the cheap and just sucked. Woulda been better imo to get a lookalike actor who introduces himself as "Skywalker... Luke Skywalker" so that they could write young luke into this universe without the tech issues... i WANTED that jedi to be Luke! I was hoping! Then he took down the hood and it was a real uuuuggggghhh moment.

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:36 (three years ago) link

SITH CLONE

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:38 (three years ago) link

I am hoping Baby Yoda is no more than an infrequent side character in the future. If this series has taught Disney one thing, it's that with the right people in charge new ideas can stick and reignite the imaginative sense of wonder the original series was so good at. Rather than continuously milking things, keep adding new things! But perhaps this is wishful thinking.

octobeard, Monday, 21 December 2020 19:38 (three years ago) link

Also given what Parker and Stone are doing with deep fakes fake Luke could have been done way the fuck better

octobeard, Monday, 21 December 2020 19:40 (three years ago) link

so boba wasn't wearing his dad's armor in that last scene

mookieproof, Monday, 21 December 2020 19:43 (three years ago) link

Woulda been better imo to get a lookalike actor who introduces himself as "Skywalker... Luke Skywalker"

This wouldn’t have worked due to vocal Hamill fans and other reasons, imo

good karma, my aesthetic (morrisp), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:52 (three years ago) link

The blurry halo of these effects is terrible.

Bidh boladh a' mhairbh de 'n láimh fhalaimh (dowd), Monday, 21 December 2020 19:53 (three years ago) link

They’ve established that Han and Lando can be played by other actors, but the last movie had younger Luke & Leia (in this same time period)... don’t think they can go against that trend, at least for a long time.

good karma, my aesthetic (morrisp), Monday, 21 December 2020 20:00 (three years ago) link

woh woh woh, so apparently that was actually Hamill's head lol

https://www.indiewire.com/2020/12/jon-favreau-explains-luke-skywalker-mandalorian-scene-hamill-on-set-1234606005/

Similar to Robert De Niro in “The Irishman,” Hamill filmed Luke’s “Mandalorian” cameo on set and VFX technology was used to de-age the character.

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 21 December 2020 22:39 (three years ago) link

man it looked terrible

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 21 December 2020 22:50 (three years ago) link

Deepfakes on YouTube of both Tarkin in Rogue One and Luke in this look far better imo

nashwan, Monday, 21 December 2020 23:22 (three years ago) link

I thought it looked better than previous star wars fakes lol

mh, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 01:32 (three years ago) link

it did, granted. still weird. like even the Luke deepfake can only do so much because the original face animations are so stiff

Nhex, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 04:17 (three years ago) link

Woulda been better imo to get a lookalike actor who introduces himself as "Skywalker... Luke Skywalker" so that they could write young luke into this universe without the tech issues...

It would have been great if they did this and then in the next season we find out that this is actually some sith dude impersonating Luke Skywalker
