Good evening!

This looks horrifying for Florida. I've got batteries, canned food, Campari, gin, batteries, radios, wine, batteries, Amaro Ramazotti, The Longest Journey, a Lorrie Moore collection, and wine.

Latest Euro model is just finishing again and again has it offshore. So did last GFS.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the next track jump further East

all long-time posters have our tics, but Neanderthal is surely the most consistent after Mr Snrub

safe wishes to Alfred, Neanderthal, any other ilx0rs, and 90% of strangers in the potential path of this very normal weather event

Another aspect to note: Dorian is the northernmost Category 5 hurricane east of the Gulf of Mexico, surpassing Hurricane Andrew. Most Atlantic hurricanes at/above Dorian's intensity often occur in the Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico where oceanic heat content is often higher. pic.twitter.com/L7J5SFQJu4

Eyewall of #Dorian has almost made it to the Abaco Islands. The eye itself is roughly the size of lake Okeechobee which you can see to the west. pic.twitter.com/uGO8KMthHy

Hurricane #Dorian is now tied for the strongest hurricane in the modern area to make landfall in the Atlantic Basin. The other storm with 185 mph sustained winds is the 1935 Florida Keys Labor Day hurricane. #nbcct pic.twitter.com/UadBmXTLMq

I am starting to lose my mind from the stress. I got banned from Twitter

I also have a one month business trip to the Philippines coming up which is probably aptly timed.

A slight jog to either direction is the diff between me getting low end hurricane force winds and nothing.

The poor Bahamas are getting pummeled rn.

The Philippines have had it much worse from tropical storms than Florida over the past century or so...

hedonic treadmill class action (Sanpaku), Sunday, 1 September 2019 20:00 (four years ago) link

I live in western Miami-Dade. Forecasters have reassured us that we will at worst get occasional gusts on Monday night into Tuesday from what will feel like a high-end tropical storm.

Horrible situation for Grand Bahama Island this morning as #Dorian just sits there as a category 5 hurricane. Reminds me of Wilma near Cozumel where it stalled and caused tremendous damage. Stay safe! 🇧🇸 pic.twitter.com/aa6h56R59O

Looks like FL dodged this one. About 50% of the models indicating NC Outer Banks getting fucked by a Cat 4 within 96 hours, though.

hedonic treadmill class action (Sanpaku), Monday, 2 September 2019 21:24 (four years ago) link

I can think of few worse things than having a Category 5 hurricane stall over the place where one lives. Stay safe?! How?

Yeah i wasn't meaning to suggest the inhabitants did anything wrong. Just an unwinnable scenario.

Horrifying images.

Whereas some of my fellow civilians are showing their asses, harassing meteorologists, bitching about the money they "wasted" on supplies.

It's like, hurricane season is far from over, so you got plenty for the next go round.

FUCK YOUR POTATO (Neanderthal), Monday, 2 September 2019 23:41 (four years ago) link

I can’t recall another hurricane just sitting there over one area for this long. The map this evening looks not too dissimilar to yesterday’s during the early afternoon. Horrible.

Oops I was trying to Google Hugo, not post it, but I believe Harvey tarried over Houston in similar fashion

forever and ever ramen (rip van wanko), Tuesday, 3 September 2019 01:28 (four years ago) link

Harvey was weird. The main storm part--the winds, the tornadoes, stuff like that--came in pretty quickly over a Friday night. Saturday morning was calm, but with a light rain that continued on into the afternoon...and then bottom dropped out because the feeder bands just slowed down to a halt for a couple days until dry air came in to move and dissolve them.

Tropical Storm Alison in '01 was crazy. It came in from the Gulf, drenched Houston for a day in route to the west, and then turned around after going 50 or so miles down I-10 and sat on Houston for a couple more days before moving out.

Friends of mine who live in Hope Town got out; their neighbors who sheltered in place both did so because the emergency shelters would not accept pets. No deaths in their neighborhood, but unimaginable property losses.

Whoa, just checked the NWS forecast maximum wind gusts along the SC and NC coastlines from Hurricane #Dorian.
60-80 mph just inland
80-100 mph on the immediate coast
> 110 mph in the Outer Banks. pic.twitter.com/VspnS3GVOE
