You want to believe in a host team brimming with talent, but choke potential is high

always root for france, to no avail. shanice van de sanden was fantastic in the champs lge final and is v fun to watch so would like to see the netherlands do well especially as van de donk is class as well.

I’ve never seen a good football opening ceremony

This song.. is not my kind of song

abcfsk, Friday, 7 June 2019 18:41 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Yeah I'm just waiting on the game itself.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 June 2019 18:47 (two weeks ago) Permalink

this year I am supporting the goalkeepers of all nations. may they show their fast-improving skill and avoid disaster at all turns

imago, Friday, 7 June 2019 19:00 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Obvious I know but goalkeeping is always gonna look poor in the women's game cos the goals are too big

oscar bravo, Friday, 7 June 2019 19:05 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Watching a French team without Necib doesn't seem right. No Abily either I think. At least le sommer is still there.

oscar bravo, Friday, 7 June 2019 19:11 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Easy

abcfsk, Friday, 7 June 2019 19:14 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Oh boy, our first VAR, yay rah

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 June 2019 19:32 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Still not convinced that getting decisions right is worth it tbh

oscar bravo, Friday, 7 June 2019 19:33 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Anticlimax king VAR

someone should think about marking renard

alomar lines, Friday, 7 June 2019 19:51 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Honestly just treating the second half as an extended cut remix.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 June 2019 20:34 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Yeah we needed that Henry goal just to give the 2nd half some color

abcfsk, Friday, 7 June 2019 20:46 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Germany team seems to have changed a lot from the last time I remember following them. Only players I can recall are marozsan and popp.

oscar bravo, Saturday, 8 June 2019 12:57 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Oh and dabritz

oscar bravo, Saturday, 8 June 2019 12:59 (two weeks ago) Permalink

China completely fucked up that transition. Should have been a goal. All stemming from a criminally bad square pass. Houillier will be getting ginola flashbacks.

oscar bravo, Saturday, 8 June 2019 13:16 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Germany running out of ideas here. Need one of the centre backs to step into midfield occasionally.

oscar bravo, Saturday, 8 June 2019 13:41 (two weeks ago) Permalink

China off the post. Germany look completely shook at the back.

oscar bravo, Saturday, 8 June 2019 13:45 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Frustrated German team. Lack a strategy in the box

abcfsk, Saturday, 8 June 2019 13:57 (two weeks ago) Permalink

fuck is this referee doing, that's two fks against china in two minutes for completely fair tackles

imago, Saturday, 8 June 2019 14:09 (two weeks ago) Permalink

just straight up gave germany a free-kick when their player dragged down the chinese one

imago, Saturday, 8 June 2019 14:24 (two weeks ago) Permalink

chinese players got away with murder in the first half tho

abcfsk, Saturday, 8 June 2019 14:28 (two weeks ago) Permalink

bad refereeing both ways is still bad refereeing!

good hit for the german goal

imago, Saturday, 8 June 2019 14:30 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Spain pretty lucky. 1-0 down for most of the game and out of jail thanks to two penalties.

ShariVari, Saturday, 8 June 2019 17:46 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Caroline Graham Hansen best in the world 1v1 possibly

abcfsk, Saturday, 8 June 2019 20:04 (two weeks ago) Permalink

var strikes again. italy 'goal' off a beautiful through ball ruled out on the tightest of margins. i assume australia are favourites here but italy have started well.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 11:15 (two weeks ago) Permalink

pen to aus

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 11:20 (two weeks ago) Permalink

scored on rebound

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 11:22 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Offside is fucking ridiculous now. May as well ban forward passes.

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:00 (two weeks ago) Permalink

terrible defending but that's a calm dribble and finish from the italy #11.
probably jinx her but the italian goalie has looked impressively assured.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:16 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Deep women's football cut: Sam, Kerr Ladies

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:25 (two weeks ago) Permalink

feel like the nu-var era we are in where ref assistants can't flag for offside until the attacking phase is completed is changing the game in some fundamental way that i can't articulate but am uneasy with.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:34 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Oh fucking hell. That one was slightly offside tbf, but even a legit close offside now feels like its ruining the game.

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:40 (two weeks ago) Permalink

australia play with such a stupidly high line that every game they play will have like 5 var reviews.
tbf all the initial decisions by the on field officials have been proved correct. i'd probably prefer the law to be if any of the attackers body is onside then they are onside rahter than if any of their body is offside then they're offside.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:51 (two weeks ago) Permalink

italy winner 5th minute of stoppage time!!

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:53 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Well deserved!

ShariVari, Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:55 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Yay! As noted by the bbc commentator, australia didn't seem to get the 'no diving in womens football' memo

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:57 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Glad I caught the last ten minutes of that.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 June 2019 13:02 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Barbara Bonansea was destined for a great tournament

abcfsk, Sunday, 9 June 2019 13:07 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Think Australia will win the next two and go through but

a) a bit sloppy/nervous today
b) think they're slightly overrated in general / have had messy behind the scenes stuff disrupt preparations
c) their troubles in defense are well known

abcfsk, Sunday, 9 June 2019 13:07 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Not a bad match between Brazil and Jamaica but that second Christiane goal probably seals it.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 June 2019 14:41 (two weeks ago) Permalink

If this hour long BBC puff piece on 'England's World Cup Lionesses' doesn't fire up the Scottish nation to get 100% behind Scotland's women's team I don't know what can.

John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Sunday, 9 June 2019 14:53 (two weeks ago) Permalink

England are rattled.

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 23 June 2019 16:48 (yesterday) Permalink

lol i popped to the shops during half time and come back and it's worse

Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 23 June 2019 16:49 (yesterday) Permalink

Maybe not too rattled.

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 23 June 2019 16:51 (yesterday) Permalink

commentators maybe over-hyping that set piece

Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 23 June 2019 16:53 (yesterday) Permalink

I think it's fair to say that while Gary Neville has become more likeable since the end of his playing career his brother has followed the opposite trajectory

or something, Sunday, 23 June 2019 16:58 (yesterday) Permalink

these things are relative but yes

Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:04 (yesterday) Permalink

This tournament is a total farce

Blandford Forum, Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:11 (yesterday) Permalink

VAR gives FIFA at al even more opportunity to skew matches in favour of wealthier and more important nations and clubs.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:18 (yesterday) Permalink

... is what I'm getting from all this, beautiful for them.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:18 (yesterday) Permalink

Completely relative yeah, not saying I actually like G Nev now at all xxp

or something, Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:20 (yesterday) Permalink

VAR makes it less likely that weaker teams get a lucky break, which is fine I guess, but in combination with the rule changes it also means that mistakes weaker teams might make (fluffed clearances, marginally skewed arms, keepers slightly off their lines at penalties etc) are punished with catastrophic consequences.

ShariVari, Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:26 (yesterday) Permalink

Indeed, it's going like a dream for FIFA so far.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:28 (yesterday) Permalink

Roll on, Qatar.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:31 (yesterday) Permalink

Great end to the game here

Blandford Forum, Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:32 (yesterday) Permalink

That said, I can’t see this being good for viewing figures. Xp

ShariVari, Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:32 (yesterday) Permalink

What a miserable slog this has been

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:34 (yesterday) Permalink

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 23 June 2019 17:34 (yesterday) Permalink

ilx's take far, far too generous on cameroon

imago, Sunday, 23 June 2019 18:24 (yesterday) Permalink

albeit the ref was a total shambles

imago, Sunday, 23 June 2019 18:25 (yesterday) Permalink

nothing like listening to an hour of English punditry to make you far, far too generous to the opposition

Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 23 June 2019 18:53 (yesterday) Permalink

be that as it may, that was absolute shithouse from them

imago, Sunday, 23 June 2019 18:57 (yesterday) Permalink

Phew

abcfsk, Sunday, 23 June 2019 20:16 (yesterday) Permalink

properly thought they were gonna find a reason not to give that

Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 23 June 2019 20:27 (yesterday) Permalink

Indeed, you have to assume FIFA are determined that France win this.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Sunday, 23 June 2019 20:32 (yesterday) Permalink

feel like they just need to get em into the last four then the bums seat themselves

Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 23 June 2019 20:35 (yesterday) Permalink

They wouldn’t have disallowed their perfectly good first goal if that was the case!

ShariVari, Sunday, 23 June 2019 20:36 (yesterday) Permalink

Yeah if fifa were competent enough to illuminati some team or other into the final they would probably do it in a less insane fashion

Blandford Forum, Sunday, 23 June 2019 20:40 (yesterday) Permalink

idk there was just an *extremely* incorrect fk against brazil as they were bursting into the box

imago, Sunday, 23 June 2019 20:54 (yesterday) Permalink

this ET will be carnage

imago, Sunday, 23 June 2019 20:58 (yesterday) Permalink

nicely taken that

Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 23 June 2019 21:25 (yesterday) Permalink

eh didn't think cameroon were remotely hard done by. their reactions were p pathetic imo. var during this wc has shown that the price that is paid by the process of getting decisions correct isn't really worth it to the spectacle of the game itself.

oscar bravo, Monday, 24 June 2019 11:01 (five hours ago) Permalink

What about the spectacle of screeching about VAR?

I want to change my display name (dan m), Monday, 24 June 2019 11:08 (five hours ago) Permalink

and phil neville can stfu acting like he wasn't part of a team where the manager wasn't fine with them chasing a ref around the pitch to get a decision or kicking reyes out of the game whenever they played arsenal

oscar bravo, Monday, 24 June 2019 11:19 (five hours ago) Permalink

Suddenly baffled by the US broadcast rights for this thing -- today's matches are on both FS1 and NBCSN, direct competitors.

Manfred Hemming-Hawing (WmC), Monday, 24 June 2019 15:29 (fifty-nine minutes ago) Permalink

Ah, I guess NBC has the Spanish-language rights in North America? Looks like NBCSN is simulcasting the Telemundo coverage.

Manfred Hemming-Hawing (WmC), Monday, 24 June 2019 15:33 (fifty-four minutes ago) Permalink

guess what? it's a penalty!

actually this looks like the clearest penalty of the entire tournament so far tbf
