He literally continued: Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. I think you're underestimating how stupid Scorsese is.

It is bemusing how this is even controversial. People enjoy theme parks.

I think it's more bemusing that so many people want to defend the comments when they are obviously wrong and stupid.

imo both Scorsese and Coppola have comprehensible opinions *and* I enjoy most of these flicks

since I can't move beyond one analogy, it's like someone telling you they don't like a restaurant because the food is bland, but you go there on occasion because it's comfort food. you completely understand why they have no interest in it, but you're up for small doses yourself

I'm currently pondering what the first Fox property is that Disney will remake. Live action version of Fox Animation's Anastastia? Hrrm, probably not

many xps to the morbs tweet but, director's point aside, Bodied kind of sucked.

I think of superhero movies as in the same category as Broadway spectaculars; there are good and bad ones and some can be subversive and some are poisonous and occasionally there's a run of Uncle Vanya. More often it is variants on The Black Crook.

The crying over this is some ugly sore winner shit imo, whole industries devoted to catering to your shitty tastes but you still get to come the embattled outsider because the old man was MEAN about captain America wah

A while ago I came up with the idea for a gritty reboot of “it’s a good life”, that classic twilight zone ep where the kid is the centre of the universe and so everyone else is forced to watch the same baby programme and have birthday cake for dinner every single day. The only thing thing you need to change is make him a 30something and the punishment for any reaction short of rictus-grin approbation is to be turned into a funko pop

mh, Monday, 21 October 2019 19:32 (four years ago) link

although, prior to these comments, I would imagine a bunch of these people would buy a Scorsese or Coppola funko pop

they probably still would, because they have to have a full collection

mh, Monday, 21 October 2019 19:33 (four years ago) link

'sore winner' or not, at the end of the day what Scorsese and Coppola is saying is just straight up wrong. and stupid. and that's honestly more important to me than who is an outsider or an underdog or whatever.

Earth to Ned is about a blue alien named Ned and his lieutenant, Cornelius, who find themselves abandoning their planned invasion of Earth because they’re too fascinated with popular culture. Their talk show features Ned interviewing celebrities to chat about all the things he finds so amazing about Earth and its people.

I appreciate how they've made this incredibly accurate.

two weeks pass...

The Department of Justice is moving to eliminate a legal agreement that has governed the movie industry since the 1940s, Justice Department antitrust chief Makan Delrahim announced Monday.

The move by the Justice Department signals that regulators believe that certain remedies are appropriate at the time, but should be reviewed to keep up with how industries change.

Delrahim’s announcement, which would alter what is known as the Paramount consent decrees, could change how theaters distribute movies. The rules, which kept major movie studios from owning theaters where their movies were played, were originally put in place to keep studios from collaborating to control all aspects of the industry.

Speaking at an antitrust conference in Washington, Delrahim cited consumers’ ability to watch movies on streaming services as one reason why the agency was seeking to terminate the agreements, along with saying the conspiracy the government was originally trying to amend decades ago no longer exists.

If nobody owns cinema then I guess those Fox movies should pouring onto free streaming services and into rep theaters any second now.

Delrahim cited consumers’ ability to watch movies on streaming services as one reason why the agency was seeking to terminate the agreements

Right now streaming is where the media conglomerates are reenacting the gold rush. In about two years or so more than half the new services will be withdrawn as unprofitable or bought out and absorbed into the handful of winners, who will grapple for a while to test each others' strength, then eventually settle into a comfortable cartel.
