THE BEACH BUM by Harmony Korine starring Matthew McConaughey

this is his best movie by some distance. I've never been a fan really, though there are great moments in almost all of his films (the opening of Spring Breakers set to that Skrillex song is still stunning but the rest of it sucks). funniest new movie I've seen in a very long time. just so joyously stupid and fun & the cinematography is beautiful and often breathtaking. most importantly it's 95 minutes, moves at a clip, and packs in more material in less time than anything else he's done. Harmony Korine skeptics and haters should go see it.

There were some funny lines in the NY Times pan

"McConaughey finds the limits of his charm quickly"

But did he exceed those limits?

my fave HK I've seen is Mister Lonely. not too intrigued by this one tbh

that and Trash Humpers are the only ones I haven't seen

If it's a distance better than Gummo it must be one of the all time greats

Funniest bit might be Jonah Hill as a โ€œwell I do declareโ€ southern gentleman. Then again, the Martin Lawrence sequence...

I'll see anything with "Crimson and Clover" in the trailer, but really, more of this? "The mind that brought you Spring Breakers"???

clemenza, Sunday, 31 March 2019 17:32 (seven months ago) link

My thoughts exactly going in. Itโ€™s so much better than Spring Breakers: lighter, funnier, packed, all comedy, no stupid dayglo ennui.

good thread

Korine came into Ave. A Kim's once when I was working c. 2004 shoved his way to the front of the line to ask if we had the miniseries Jam (2000) I told him to wait and he stormed out in a huff my coworkers were like "DO U KNOW WHO THAT WAS?" (I didn't) anyways that's the story.

Apparently she wanted to buy what was, back then, our sole (VHS!) copy of Seven Beauties (maybe she was doing research for Swept Away? - the timeline fits), but we refused to sell it (presumably because it had been a good earner over the years and it would be too much hassle to replace it). She ended up leaving in a huff. At least, that's how I remember the story being told to me. I wasn't there.

DD apparently dropped a bill in an employee's fundraising bowl to help fund their short film.

it would be such an honor to piss Madonna off

only Canadians will get this one, but an old friend pulled that one on Jean Charest when he came to her magazine shop to pick up his regular newspaper order, complete with making him spell it out

Iggy Pop, a frequent customer at a certain Miami bookstore at which I worked in the early '00s, requested a copy of The Corrections. When I called the other store to send a copy over the next morning, I froze when asked, "Customer name?" I looked over at Igs, smiling coquettishly.

"Osterberg," I said.

No idea if this purports to some larger comment on the actual world--the ending suggests a possible Trump film, though I do tend to find such connections where none exist--but mildly diverting, with a weird soundtrack (yacht-rock primer plus...the one Cure song I love).

this was great. Korine has such a fantastic eye, really I will just watch his films for the parade of funny/surprising imagery. Was also interesting that the film doesn't shy away from the trail of destruction anyone living like this would leave behind them, and is more about this fine line he toes between being lovably entertaining and a destructive narcissist

Such a bummer that this came and went without leaving the impression that Spring Breakers did, it's so much better imo.

flappy bird, Monday, 1 July 2019 16:35 (four months ago) link

Eh idk they kinda do totally different things imo, despite sharing a locale and color pallette

I agree, just bummed that this one didn't stick.

flappy bird, Monday, 1 July 2019 17:59 (four months ago) link

idk Korine having "hits" at all is such a bizarre fluke that I wouldn't expect anything he does to have any kind of broad appeal, even something as funny and star-studded as this

I'm not talking blockbuster, this one just came and went, hardly promoted, and pretty much everyone I talked to that was a Harmony Korine fan had no idea it was even out.

overall really dug this. i may have been flying a little high on edibles and wine myself.

jonah was atrocious. also snoop? kind of not great. like he looks cool and sounds cool but there;s something kind of wooden about him onscreen. this generation's Kris Kristofferson.
