Coint & Plick 2018 - ILX's best video games of the year - CAMPAIGN and VOTE here!

What are the best games of 2018? In ILX's twelfth (?!) Coint & Plick poll, ballots work similar to Pazz & Jop; you have 100 points to allocate, and may give as few as 1 or as many as 30 points to any game. Ballots are due in a little over three weeks (Tuesday, April 2) and the rollout will begin shortly after.

There are three ways to vote!

a) Make a copy of this spreadsheet, fill it out, and e-mail me the spreadsheet (ps2ilxⓐgmail.com)
b) Use the spreadsheet (above) and enter the "copy/paste" line into this Google Form.
c) Manually make your ballot, spacing your number of points and your game with " /// " (e.g. 30 /// Minesweeper), each game on a new line, and e-mail it to me (ps2ilxⓐgmail.com)

You can find the complete list of titles in the second tab of the spreadsheet. PLEASE ONLY VOTE FOR GAMES YOU PLAYED ON THAT PLATFORM. As much as I want to vote for Yakuza 0, I just played it late on PS4, not on PC. Having a game place top 5 multiple years in a row because it was slowly rolled out on multiple platforms and people forgot they voted for it the year before was bad!

Please also include, if you choose, your disappointment of 2018 and your non-2018 game of 2018, as well as your top 3 platforms of 2018.

Write-ins are fine, but I'll look at you like a stern and disappointed authority figure. Make a post here so I know you'll vote, too, even if you are gonna be a last-minute lemmy, because I wanna know there's gonna be more than like 8 of you.

Ah boo hiss!

I think my ballot is only going to be like 5 games max, is that OK?

Gaseous Clay (Leee), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 21:56 (one week ago) Permalink

the beauty of the format is you don't need to list tons of stuff you can just award 3 30s and two 5s if you want

celest goty

just got an access request on the spredsheet - do you need to be able to edit to make a copy?

Making a copy worked for me. I went to "File > Make a copy"

my ballot is like 5 things that everyone on the board played and 5 things that i'm pretty sure no one played but me

ciderpress, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 22:28 (one week ago) Permalink

the only campaigning i will do is to remind everyone about Yoku's Island Express. it only takes like 6 hours to complete so you still have time to play it

ciderpress, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 22:36 (one week ago) Permalink

I'm trying to figure out the best/lolziest way to include MPQ into my ballot.

Gaseous Clay (Leee), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 22:41 (one week ago) Permalink

xp i'll have to tackle that and Hollow Knight on my Switch, got them a while back

Nhex, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 00:47 (one week ago) Permalink

I think I only played two games from last year, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire and Pathfinder: Kingmaker, so I don't know if I should vote.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 09:59 (one week ago) Permalink

what a seriously great year for 2d platform games.

thomasintrouble, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 11:07 (one week ago) Permalink

is Celeste as good as Hollow Knight?

Neil S, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 11:17 (one week ago) Permalink

Celeste is the best 2D platform game.

moose; squirrel (silby), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 13:53 (one week ago) Permalink

celeste, hollow knight, dead cells, yoku's island, any others?

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 13:59 (one week ago) Permalink

Good games to consider, you mean? Or platformers? I’ve played a bit of yoku (the demo) but it’s more like pinball than a platformer, right? Maybe I didn’t play far enough into it.

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 14:15 (one week ago) Permalink

2D platformers

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 14:23 (one week ago) Permalink

the four mordy picked out are good enough that people will still be talking about them a decade from now ... yoku as more of an aficionado's pick but still. All four are on my ballot.

tropical freeze sorta belongs in the conversation at least for me

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 15:44 (one week ago) Permalink

it's on my must play list yet
tbh i don't know if i'm gonna have time or inclination to do anything but Sekiro for the next four months tho

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 15:53 (one week ago) Permalink

How rage quit inducing is Celeste, compared to Hollow Knight?

Gaseous Clay (Leee), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 16:22 (one week ago) Permalink

Oops I didn't play any 2018 games, just the same game I've been playing since 2016. See you on the results thread!

MPQ! MPQ!

Nhex, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 16:33 (one week ago) Permalink

btw, Pomentiful, definitely vote. we love seeing those picks!

Nhex, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 16:34 (one week ago) Permalink

Celeste is much more rage quit inducing than Hollow Knight (except for the very, very last parts of Hollow Knight which are Celeste-like in the demands they place upon the player)

Dan I., Wednesday, 13 March 2019 16:54 (one week ago) Permalink

celeste will hurt you but if you quit soon enough or hang on long enough it is a thing to love

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 17:10 (one week ago) Permalink

Oh I just remembered the Katamari Damacy re-release, did that get a nom?

JimD, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 17:11 (one week ago) Permalink

I quit Celeste because it was too challenging, but not in rage, which sort of captures how great a game it is.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 17:24 (one week ago) Permalink

What is beating Celeste anyway? I finished the a sides some of the b sides some of the mountain there’s so much more to do to 100% it

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 17:31 (one week ago) Permalink

There are c sides!

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 17:32 (one week ago) Permalink

This has happened to me in a lot of games recently! There's the "ending"-- which is usually p.easy to get to--followed by tons more content that I end up playing until I hit the wall beyond which my reflexes/ability/dedication won't allow me to proceed, so I just kind of stop playing. I'm not criticizing games for this, though! It's a lot better than the alternative, which is finishing a game you love and wishing you had more of it (e.g. Steamworld Dig 1 & 2)

Dan I., Wednesday, 13 March 2019 18:05 (one week ago) Permalink

If by better you mean worse, I completely agree.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 21:49 (one week ago) Permalink

just getting to the top of the mountain is 'beating' but yeah there's way more stuff after that

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 22:00 (one week ago) Permalink

gris also deserves the year-of-the-2d-platformer shoutout, one of the prettiest ones ever

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 22:04 (one week ago) Permalink

ctrl-f "Marvel Puzzle Quest"

wtf I don't know you people anymore

GDPR vs GAPDY (DJP), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 22:05 (one week ago) Permalink

You need to search for "MPQ"!

I have a feeling I'd vote for GRIS but it's not on PS4 and I don't like playing on my laptop.

Gaseous Clay (Leee), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 23:29 (one week ago) Permalink

the best 2D platformer and best game i played that came out last year is La-Mulana 2. it's a very open metroidvania similar in vastness to Hollow Knight, except centred around very very elaborate puzzles. it's one of the best games i've ever played and took me something like 50 hours to complete

ufo, Thursday, 14 March 2019 03:57 (one week ago) Permalink

yeah, that looks great. Out for ps4 and switch in a month or three.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 14 March 2019 04:42 (one week ago) Permalink

submitted. As always, I'm a couple of years behind on the big games as I'm a tightarse when it comes to buying games that'll be on sale by the time I get round to playing them.

thomasintrouble, Thursday, 14 March 2019 10:24 (one week ago) Permalink

That is the only rational way to buy games tbh.

Gaseous Clay (Leee), Thursday, 14 March 2019 16:22 (one week ago) Permalink

Yeah...I kinda wish that maybe we could take a year off and then start doing the polls 2 years later (2021 poll for best games of 2019)

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Thursday, 14 March 2019 16:56 (one week ago) Permalink

That would definitely have increased my nominations!

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 14 March 2019 17:00 (one week ago) Permalink

how will i know which games to play a year or 2 late then

ciderpress, Thursday, 14 March 2019 17:14 (one week ago) Permalink

Actually, it's a not a terrible idea to do anniversary polls, if someone is willing to do the legwork. (Not me, cough)

Nhex, Thursday, 14 March 2019 19:24 (one week ago) Permalink

I'm in a movie club that does this all the time, going back 10 years, 20 years, etc.

Nhex, Thursday, 14 March 2019 19:25 (one week ago) Permalink

Considering the noise I made about doing a HOF, I am totally willing to do this.

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Thursday, 14 March 2019 20:33 (one week ago) Permalink

i don't feel qualified to talk about games 2006-2016, i wasn't playing much during that time that wasn't online timesinks. i'm catching up now on the genres i care about but its a slow process
