That new Netflix thing

Binged the first eighteen episodes last night. Isn't it crazy? Started out unsure but I'm pretty certain it's the greatest artwork of our young century.

Just wanted to ask you all about some ~theories~ I've been having...do you think Bass and Joyfia are actually, like, getting smaller? It's just that I'm starting to notice some really tall Feelers! Meanwhile, I'm hoping that SPOILER(??) Ronby manages to infiltrate the Gannetry before their next Edict - I know he's being set up to fail but I've checked and this writing team were also responsible for Lesser Evil so there's definitely precedent for this kind of thing.

Oh and I just wanted to also say, I looove the soundtrack, and the sets! It's like 1996 just burped up 1987 in a futuristic barroom filled with all of the 1960s!

So yeah, anybody else ~obsessed~ with this show now? And what if SPOILER (???) Ronby IS a Feeler?

This is some hot, fresh content.

Lighten up, Old Lunch, and tell us who your favourite member of the Gannetry is. I think I'm a Venge Particle guy, although I'm a bit unsure of his loyalty to the Tide or his ability to sustain feelpower when anxious

Oh yeah Simon that was so badass, I timed it at eleven minutes forty six seconds

People getting excited by fiction, oh noes!

Tuomas, Monday, 11 February 2019 16:22 (five months ago) link

I actually kind of feel like we've moved past the "must watch" streaming era into an overwhelming glut of pretty good shows that are so effectively microtargeted that it's more likely than not you won't have watched the show your coworker brings up.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 11 February 2019 16:45 (five months ago) link

that happened a while ago dude

brimstead, Monday, 11 February 2019 16:46 (five months ago) link

yeah, even watching Sex Education, which many ppl on here liked a lot, I could feel that microtargeting in action throughout, not to mention the preponderance of "teen show" cliches. It's well constructed but there's a hollowness there. occasionally something really breaks through and does something cool and different (Russian Doll, and I'd make a case for Hill House despite the way it reproduces some elements of the formula) but it's rare

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Monday, 11 February 2019 16:49 (five months ago) link

- Shows that are great for three episodes and then coast along for the rest of the series and the follow-up series before being cancelled
- Shows that take at least three series to actually get anywhere and until then include a hell of a lot of padding-out, foreshadowing and people looking into the middle distance while portentous music plays

frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 11 February 2019 16:50 (five months ago) link

the Next New Thing churn has gotten really wild too, to the extent that it seems rare for a show to get even a fraction of the buzz for seasons 3, 4, etc. than it did when it started. for instance, I feel like nobody is talking about the newly released episodes of Kimmy Schmidt, for example, and maybe they suck, but honestly I suck too because I loved that show and yet I haven't gotten anywhere close to watching the new ones yet. meanwhile I've already ripped through Russian Doll.

The Fyre festival doc momentarily had a feeling of the old kind of buzz around it, but it was more like an echo of an echo of an echo of the old kind of buzz. And that was about all it deserved, tbh, it was entertaining but nothing amazing.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 11 February 2019 17:09 (five months ago) link

personally, I've been enjoying a new old show called Ghost Town Gold. in it, two men wearing blue jeans travel to old western mining towns in the United States (states such as Utah and Nevada, for example) and search through old homes and barns for western artifacts such as: spurs, stirrups, mining lanterns, vintage Levis blue jeans, etc. they then haggle with the home owner to make a deal, and then sell the artifacts for profit. but during the negotiations you get to learn a little bit about the history of the town and the home owner's family history, it's pretty cool and neat!

del griffith, Monday, 11 February 2019 18:02 (five months ago) link

I found S1 of Narcos a bit joyless as well, and not quite "smart" enough to justify its Wire-like air of seriousness.

Instead I'm finally getting around to a little show called the Sopranos.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 11 February 2019 18:02 (five months ago) link

LJ, it's okay, we all bomb sometimes, but if you smash your guitar over the heckler's head that's one less open mic you have to workshop your material. Think about the future.

Shaved Cyborg (Old Lunch), Monday, 11 February 2019 18:04 (five months ago) link

dg, the Netflix domination of cultural discourse irritates me a little, and recently clicking on Netflix itself has induced a sinking feeling akin to 'ah another one like that', but you're clearly trying to paint me as...idk, a sexist or something? Feels like you want to initiate a pile-on or a fight of some kind. Baffling

But at least you're not the one whose regular posting style is 'Drumpf will probably powershart out a confession of collusion onto the bed linen during his next piss tape' and who is nevertheless attempting to clown me

imago, Monday, 11 February 2019 18:07 (five months ago) link

i feel like this is a step in the right direction of ascending to the next level in Weingartenism, but you neglected the crucial element of ALL CAPS

sarahell, Monday, 11 February 2019 18:15 (five months ago) link

no way would a true Weingartenist miss the opportunity to type POWERSHART as opposed to just leaving it in understated lowercase

sarahell, Monday, 11 February 2019 18:17 (five months ago) link

Narcos S2 was a bit better than S1, and I thought S3 did a good job with the Cali Cartel stuff. The new series is a disappointment bc it seemed like it was moving in a better direction, but it falls back onto the lazy tropes of crime shows and films, and similar to the original series it errs too much on the side of making a genuinely despicable villain into a likable, sensitive businessman who just happens to run a murderous cartel. Maybe they didn't want to make Wagner Moura and Diego Luna unlikable. I don't blame the actors there. The portrayals don't seem very honest though.

omar little, Monday, 11 February 2019 18:23 (five months ago) link

i guess i should say that it's a lazy copout to romanticize and make the cartel lifestyle attractive in a way that would attract *anyone* rather than the more difficult work of showing it how it really operates in its constant ugliness, making you understand why these psychopaths and sociopaths would find it attractive but still acknowledging that it's ugly.

I think the series GOMORRA works a lot better in that regard, it's looks amazing but it's so ugly and depressing and the whole endeavor seems pointless (which hearkens back to the film series Battles Without Honor and Humanity, crime as a pointless and ugly life).

omar little, Monday, 11 February 2019 18:26 (five months ago) link

you know what did that well, was this Colombian show "En la Boca del Lobo"

sarahell, Monday, 11 February 2019 18:38 (five months ago) link

just looked it up -- that's interesting bc it covers the same ground as Narcos S3, the main subplot of that (head of security for Cali Cartel helps bring them down) being the primary storyline for this one!

omar little, Monday, 11 February 2019 18:43 (five months ago) link

yeah, it's based on that guy's book -- stylistically it's more of a telenovela -- like, if it had been an American netflix production it would not have been 80 episodes long; it would have been much shorter -- but i felt like it did a better job of conveying the day to day and the personalities of the Cali Cartel and other people involved in the story
