Paul Klee vs. Gustav Klimt

In honor of Klee's 139th birthday and the centennial year of Klimt's death.

A companion poll to the Monet vs. Manet one.

I used to find Klimt overly gaudy and was against his work. I've come around a bit after seeing some of his drawings at the Met Breuer earlier in the year.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
Paul Klee 36
Gustav Klimt 14

both great, but klimt

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 21:18 (six months ago) Permalink

Interesting. I had to force myself to appreciate Klimt. But the subtle poetry of Klee’s works was always appealing to me.

Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 21:22 (six months ago) Permalink

Klee, no contest for me. But sometimes I see the odd bit of atypical Klimt that is surprisingly nice, but generally can't stand most of his work - it's pure high society goth shit imo!

calzino, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 21:22 (six months ago) Permalink

He lived a kind of austere life though. The glitz of his work didn’t reflect an affection for material comfort/luxury. Interestingly, Michelangelo was the same way—the most bombastic of the High Renaissance masters in his work, yet led the simplest lifestyle of them all.

Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 21:27 (six months ago) Permalink

Austere in terms of wearing simple clothes and sleeping on the floor and stuff—Klimt fathered like 20 kids or something and was no ascetic.

wasn't Egon Schiele one of his students/acolytes?

calzino, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 21:30 (six months ago) Permalink

They were in the same circle and influenced one another, even though schiele was a generation younger. I don’t know if they had a formal student/pupil relationship ever.

i have a book of klimt's pencil sketches, i think i might prefer those to his paintings

now i'm second-guessing myself and wondering if i should've gone for klee, whose work is wonderfully universal and so much fun to look at

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 21:33 (six months ago) Permalink

I like Klee much more but Klimt is fine, in certain kinds of mood.

Love both, not sure whether to go with klee for everyone's favourite Benjamin passage or klimt for my favourite painting that I bought in the form of a thousand piece jigsaw puzzle that I intended to put together and then hang on my wall, less one single piece, but I never did because jigsaw puzzles are hard and boring

i tend to like Klee's colors a bit more, but both classic, it's hard to choose

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 21:40 (six months ago) Permalink

I have seen some of Klimt's nature studies that are much more pleasing than the gaudy society portraits. I know I'm being quite reductive about his main work, but it really gives me a headache. Klee is one of the 20th century's greatest artists for me. When I was a textile design student in what feels like a previous lifetime now, I completely fell in love with his work.

calzino, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 21:40 (six months ago) Permalink

Klimt's nature studies

his beech and birch forests are some of my faves

Klee's exquisite colour sense and visual musical/poetry or whatever want to call it was there from the early days!

there were some artists heavily influenced by Klee in the art brut fashion like Dubuffet, who I quite liked at one time, but they lacked his charm or something.

yeah, i was repulsed by images like "woman in gold." it seemed to reflect an aesthetic sensibility that was absolutely alien to me. i was suspicious of him and this feeling has been hard to fully shake off.

Trϵϵship, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 04:57 (six months ago) Permalink

klee on the other hand i always loved. there was always something really warm and personal about his work. it seemed to get at a certain essence of modernism--the joy in experimentation

Trϵϵship, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 05:00 (six months ago) Permalink

Voted Klee... There a natural mesmerism to them that I've always responded to.

Not into Klimt much, but everyone owes it to themselves to see at least one in person.

It's kind of amazing to realize how much of the design aesthetic of the '50s and '60s comes from Paul Klee--from a thousand jazz album covers to the graphic works of Charles & Ray Eames (below) to the curtains my mom bought in 1960.

I went to an exhibition of Klees from the Met today. So much amazing stuff.

"Clarification" probably doesn't come out well in reproduction, but it was incredibly beautiful in full size.

I love the softness of his line compared to the hard edges both of other modernist movements — like cubism — and much of the design of his colleagues at the bauhaus. It’s a more personal kind of modernism.

you know, re: the overexposed klimt society portraits that everyone is tired of, if you ignore the faces and other anthromorphic bits and just focus on like the clothes and the background textures there are a lot of similarities to klee!

like enlarge that picture so you can only see the lower half of it and it doesn't look so different from klee!

the late great, Friday, 11 January 2019 20:53 (five months ago) Permalink

oh I think some of his nature studies show he was more than just a stylist and even his more decorative/embellished stuff is actually quite loose and not as intensively overworked as it maybe looks at postcard scale.
