My Facebook poll was inconclusive so I turn to ilx: do you say this word as though it means what it does, or do you so “bionic with a p, seems legit”

BIO-pic

"oppic" is short for nothing.

i said bi oppic for years and it feels like that's the standard pronunciation in the UK (?) but surely it's bio pic?

"bi-oppic" sends me straight for the "irrational anger" thread

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 17 December 2018 19:18 (five years ago) link

"Bio pick" is self-evidently correct, being the conjoined elisions of two words. "Bye-oppic" carries no internal clue as to its origins or intentions as a word.

i hate this word because you want to pronounce it like myopic but you can't. "bio pic" does not roll off the tongue

I’d call them bi-oppics if I thought it would make them any better.

Next to the video game movie this is the worst genre.

Scam jam, thank you ma’am (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 17 December 2018 19:26 (five years ago) link

I don't know, I used to like all those stodgy old Hollywood biopics of Chopin and Pasteur, or whoever, when I was, like, 10.

Yeah I’m at the stage where I know to avoid them if they’re not directed by someone like Terence Davies

Paul Muni films, in other words. (xp)

Literary ones are generally the worst, I skipped the hell out of Collette

Greer Garson as Marie Curie etc. Probably terrible.

"Bio pic" sounds like a device for subtly collecting a murder suspect's dna in a public place

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 17 December 2018 19:32 (five years ago) link

so I'd say that if that's what it meant

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 17 December 2018 19:33 (five years ago) link

unfortunately it means "a probably shit movie" or "Bi oppic"

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 17 December 2018 19:34 (five years ago) link

"bio pic" does not roll off the tongue

I think it began life as a headline word in Variety and was never meant to be elegant, just short and visually pithy.

“byaw-piss” here

YES!

i heard a friend say bi-oppic recently and it was the first time i've ever considered that bio-pic might be pronounced a different way.

the real issue is the emphasis: putting it on the first syllable is imbalanced, second syllable is holy

The thing I've never understood is why, regardless of pronunciation preference, everyone treats the 't' in 'bioptic' as if it's silent.

I'm trying to think of any bio-pics i like. The recent Emily D one was exceptional. The two 90's Van gogh ones were memorable. Patten was a very enjoyable but probably mediocre movie carried by the outstanding George C Scott. nah they are mostly absolute rinse I think.

calzino, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 13:52 (five years ago) link

What distinguishes a bye-AH-pick from a film based on a true story? Like is Shattered Glass a Stephen Glass biopic? Because that one is fantastic. And is it still a biopic if it's almost certainly 50%+ bullshit? Because Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is likewise fantastic.

Loggins and Rogers and G are...K3NNY (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 14:02 (five years ago) link

well I think a biopic should technically show a person's entire life story (or most of it at least)

rather than just dramatising one particular incident from their life
