conservative talking points about liberals that are true

I actually do believe the following:
- the gov't should take everybody's guns away
- we should have open borders
- taxes should be super-high, esp on petroleum companies (which should be taxed into oblivion)
- Trump should be impeached and punished to the full extent of the law
- Anybody who supports Trump is essentially a racist imo

Those are conservative talking points about liberals which are true of you, but I think only #4 would get support from a majority of self-identified liberals. Maybe #1, since a handgun ban is supported by about 28% of people per Gallup and that probably includes half of liberals (though lots of people have guns for hunting that aren't handguns and I'd be surprised if a majority of liberals thought hunting should be banned.)

I hold to traditional values and do NOT believe that a man should be able to marry a horse. As the stronger partner, it is up to the horse to propose, and to carry their partner over the threshold.

i really do think it should seem way way worse that mr. trump misspoke about the new york stock exchange opening on 9/12/01 to the assholes who harp on mr. obama saying something about 57 states than it would appear to but mr. trump's supporters are too deplorably racist to begin to understand that

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 1 November 2018 00:06 (five years ago) link

Progressives really do believe that most humans are born with roughly equal potential, and that oligarchies of inherited wealth are pernicious to democracy, social mobility and good lives for most.

The estate tax on inherited wealth should be very high, 80+% on fortunes above a few million, without current loopholes for trusts etc.

I'd disagree about most of Οὖτις's points.

* I'd be content with New Zealand's policy of gun purchasing licencing, in which anyone who wants to own guns must pass interviews, prove they have secure gun storage, and have references to support their character.
* I don't favor open borders, but instead the prior policy (in the US) of careful selection of new citizens, including both the brightest who might grow the economy, and worthy refugees who were parts of political opposition movements. Open borders hurt all Americans at the bottom of the employment ladder, and historically, labor rights have only improved when there is a relative shortage of Labor compared to Capital. There should be a very high bar for H1-B worker visas, which have harmed numerous tech and engineering careers while benefiting only corporate elites among Americans.
* I've supported the carbon tax (Washington State had a referenda in 2016, and its up again in 2018), but my contributions ran up against opposition from Sierra Club and BLM. The carbon tax is supported by The Economist, so its the neo-liberal response to climate change, and here, the economists are right. Only by taxing emissions externalities can we provide the right incentives for all paths to lowering emissions, which will include efficiency, conservation and living smaller, in addition to driving coal out of business immediately, and other fossil fuels out of business over the next 3 decades. Do petroleum companies initially benefit from carbon taxes? Yes, they know that initially, these favor natural gas (with its natural symbiosis with renewable energy) over coal, and that they will still benefit from this shift. Like it or not, its the petroleum companies that have the capital and knowhow to make algal biodiesel economically viable, and your grandchildren may be filling their vehicles with algal juice. I think there should be an immediate and permanent cease of all new coal mining leases on Federal land, something which the Obama administration didn't support.
* I follow law professor Laurence Tribe on impeachment. There should be a very high bar for impeachment, as "high-crimes" as defined in the constitution has a specific definition. I believe that there's probably a good case for impeachment of DJ Trump for violations of the emoluments clause, and I believe the Mueller investigation will demonstrate this, but I also think it will be better for the country should all American's besides dead-enders recognize this, and repudiate Trumpism at the 2018 and 2020 elections.
* I recognize with Michael Moore that there are still Trump supporters who are ill-informed, and who just wanted to throw a grenade into the status quo. They accomplished the opposite, but the problem here lies in our news media and the phenomenon of "reality shopping". We need a fairness doctrine in all broadcast and also narrowcast internet news.

I think open borders is probably a lot less popular among self-identified liberals than widespread gun control or even an outright gun ban (if one could "wave a wand" etc.)

Yerac, Friday, 2 November 2018 16:42 (five years ago) link

Eliza: I'm no legal scholar, but I understand from Laurence Tribe that there is an established judicial precedent for "high crimes and misdemeanors": the Presidency isn't the only office that has been subject to the legal definition over the centuries. Bill Clinton lying under oath about consensual sex almost certainly fails the test, but emoluments clause bribery probably does, and likely can be proven.

That said, I think Tribe is also right that the extended process of impeachment, which will never lead to Trump's removal from office with the current Senate, is on a path to civil conflict. It is better to have a lame duck president with bedrock 30% approval for the next two years, than have nutjobs shooting leaders and political protests.

We win by making the Trumpists and allied white supremacists understand they are a tiny minority, they will never have power again in our lifetimes, and we will judge them forever for the humiliation they have brought our country over the past few years. I certainly think its already time to just exclude "awful uncles" from family gatherings, I've already avoided two Thanksgiving gatherings where they weren't excluded.

Of course, if the 2020 election is stolen, then its Civil War. I was an expert marksman in the Army, and I would pop some of these cunts with no regrets.

P. much. I’m becoming more resigned to the fact that I might just be the hated-on-all-sides vanilla liberal who doesn’t see a lot of the stances in this thread realistic and workable on a national level and might be more damaging than good cuz it freaks the the normies out. But hey that’s on old conversation.
