'Eat ethically, refuse the straw, recycle recycle recycle!' vs 'Why should I?' errr... FITE?!

Two big news stories to do with our environmental future:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-45814659
https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2017/jul/10/100-fossil-fuel-companies-investors-responsible-71-global-emissions-cdp-study-climate-change

Does charity (or in this case saving the environment) begin at home?
Can we save the world by changing our diets, one flexitarian at a time?
Carry your groceries by hand - we don't need any more plastic bags in the sea...

Or is this all pointless self-flagellation, when just 100 companies are responsible for 71% of global emissions?
Is a paper straw going to save us? Do we really need to waste our time sorting recycling into various bins if it's all going to end up in landfill anyway?

What about the counterpoint: The reason these 100 companies exist and create all this mess BECAUSE of mass consumption, and therefore by changing our individual habits, we should be able to reduce those emissions at a grassroots level?

Or is it more useful to simply hold these companies to ransom and demand that they clean up their acts, without every person having to have four different recycling boxes in their kitchen?

We can do both!

(Though I don't think these companies can't be stopped in the next twelve years no matter how many people protest or vote)

It'll be just like all the other times when the will of the people radically overhauled the entire poltical-economic system of the planet in the interests of humanity as an abstract goal.

mass death probably the only possible correcting factor here

s'alright, the acceleration of mass desertification and the ensuing resource wars should see to that
