speaking of white supremacists in the midwest, i listened to steve king's opponent today, JD Scholten, on the Pod Save America podcast, which is sometimes good. overall i'm pretty impressed with him! yeah, he's a huge ethanol guy, which blows. but it's also to be expected, since his district is the biggest ethanol supporter in the country. he mentioned that tom harkin was one of his two "political heroes", which seems like a pretty decent role model for a iowa politician. he seem deeply embarrassed by iowans voting for a neo-nazi, year after year, so that's good. he points to all of the young people leaving iowa as soon as soon as humanly possible as a problem for the state, which is true. he sleeps in a winnebago in walmart parking lots and has no money, and was a terrible relief pitcher for unknown independent baseball teams. i like all that.he seems determined to be more than just "not steve king", even though that's clearly the biggest thing he's got going for him.

you know, honestly this really just describes every white evangelical in the midwest, including (especially) the pastors and leaders of the church. stuff like that just rolls out of the side of their mouths. and politicians in the midwest have to be christian, or pretend to be christian, and that often involves being evangelical, or pretending that evangelicals aren't filled with hatred toward everyone that disagrees with how genitalia should rub up against other genitalia, or abortion. they have to at least pay lip service to evangelicals and pretend that they're not full of shit, and many politicians genuinely LIKE the evangelicals and think they're a positive influence. so it's not surprising that you end up with midwest politicians that are indistinguishable from hate groups

and not just the midwest. I don't think we'll see an openly atheist President in our lifetimes.
