So Texas vote stuff is affecting everyone, right? It's not just messing up Beto votes but Cruz votes as well? Did I read that correctly?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 October 2018 22:16 (five years ago) link

not sure what you mean Οὖτις

n/m didn't realize early voting (presumably w machines) was already going on in Texas

anyway I am skeptical. How would they know the votes are being changed, for one thing.

Οὖτις, Friday, 26 October 2018 22:16 (five years ago) link

users are reporting it? ok

Οὖτις, Friday, 26 October 2018 22:18 (five years ago) link

After you go through all the pages plugging in your votes, you get a page that lists all your votes. People are claiming it doesn't match their entries. I'm a bit skeptical too, who knows?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 26 October 2018 22:18 (five years ago) link

I've used these machines many times and never had issues. I'll be keeping a close eye in it this time.

The critical difference is when it screws up a Beto vote it switches it to Cruz, but when it screws up a Cruz vote it's switched to no-vote. So Cruz is very much advantaged if the rate of screwups is the same for both.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Friday, 26 October 2018 22:42 (five years ago) link

I got the impression that it only switched when the "vote straight ticket" option was used, not if you voted for each candidate separately. I've only voted in California, and don't recall ever seeing that option.

nickn, Friday, 26 October 2018 22:51 (five years ago) link

The thing with all the voting machine related issues, like possible fraud in 2004 and ever after is that there's never a smoking gun (unlike the much more obvious voter intimidation and suppression that's done in the open) so it's hard to not be skeptical.

no big surprises from the trump rally so far: he's already led the crowd in chants against maxine waters and hillary clinton, as well as responded favorably to a chant of "CNN sucks"

Regarding the Texas voting machine issue, there's at least one person I find reasonably credible who claims they experienced it:

Dear @TXCivilRights -

I was one of these people.

I have not previously discussed it with anyone because I didn’t want to sound an alarm until I knew whether or not this was a pattern.

I will detail what I experienced, along with a photo, in this short thread.

Q: "Would you yourself pledge to tone down the rhetoric for the next few days?" A: "I think I've been toned down, if you want to know the truth. I could really tone it up because as you know the media's been extremely unfair to me and to the Republican Party."

Dan S, Saturday, 27 October 2018 02:10 (five years ago) link

YMP, what's the issue with "manila envelope"? I just checked the dictionary - manila paper is "a strong and durable paper of a brownish or buff color and smooth vanilla finish made originally from Manila hemp". I used the term correctly.

Political violence, including the vandalism we see right here in Lincoln, is a threat to good citizenry and free expression in our republic. It is not funny. It is never acceptable.
