The point is to convince other people, who have not previously voted, to vote against Trump or against whatever Republican is running.

― grawlix (unperson), Thursday, October 18, 2018

"actually guys, trump is not really a self-made man" is def the missing piece that will get people to the polls, because nobody knew that in 2016

I don't know what you could possibly say about Trump at this point to someone who isn't already convinced that he's among the worst humans currently living.

This misses the point that a very large portion of the US electorate pays only the tiniest fraction of their attention to politics. You have to pound them with the same information over and over for it to penetrate. That's what the Republican disinformation apparatus does - and after the 18th or 26th repetition, it becomes a fact, whether it is true or not.

Congressional Dems don't have the antiestablishment bona fides to claim a moral high ground on corruption. They'll make the attack and Trump will give them a stupid nickname and makena false equivalency and say something freshly racist about Maxine Waters because he has a walnut brain and that narrative Gambit will land hollow

idk. if i was running in 2020, and i still might, i would try to link the trump organization with the word "fraud" in everyone's minds

Trϵϵship, Friday, 19 October 2018 03:09 (five years ago) link

I think movements ought to be doing that--I don't think the broad public trusts any given sitting Dem to have a clean nose, distrust being historically high.

On second thought, American J Public might mistake that for a pun on Frau.

They already tried that - remember the ads with all the contractors Trump defrauded on his properties?
Didn't work.

louise ck (milo z), Friday, 19 October 2018 04:45 (five years ago) link

painting trump as a "fraud" wouldn't work in that context because a lot of people would a) do the same b) respect someone else who successfully gamed the system. someone else said that, years ago, I forget where I read it. I agree with it, anyway it would be better to run on literally anything else like someone said upthread. the tax stuff is SO boring

anyway congrats to NYT, WaPo, MSNBC etc for legitimizing obvious MBS front group Arabia Foundation by treating it as independent & not disclosing it was regime PR. Im sure this will cause them all to reflect on the role “think tanks” play in shaping option https://t.co/T07Gx95eKn

The problem with trying to tell the truth about Trump is the existence of the concept of Fake News. So everything revealed can be ascribed to being part of that by a true believer.
So wonder what it takes to get the wool removed from their eyes. Are even eventual immediate physical consequences going to be enough or are they going to be put down to other reasons than what would hopefully be the recognisable cause.

Stevolende, Friday, 19 October 2018 06:18 (five years ago) link

The 'truth' about Trump is irrelevant. Making any campaign about Trump is a mistake. Give people something to vote FOR instead

Ha! I was thinking more conor vs khabib. Trump lands punches so dont play on his terrain, dont get tricked into playing the game where he wants it. Focusing on 'fraud' as the main thrust of a campaign seems hugely the wrong way to go. Making Trump the focus of the campaign seems the wrong way to go. He already is, get some other strings to the bow. "trump is a bad man" as an approach isn't a good strategy

anvil, Friday, 19 October 2018 10:29 (five years ago) link

Just pick a good strong candidate that sticks to their own game and doesn't get tricked into going where Trump wants. Warren got played so badly its laughable. Who doesn't get played by Trump? Pick that guy

The Washington Post reports:

Hard-line Republicans and conservative commentators are mounting a whispering campaign against Jamal Khashoggi that is designed to protect President Trump from criticism of his handling of the dissident journalist’s alleged murder by operatives of Saudi Arabia — and support Trump’s continued aversion to a forceful response to the oil-rich desert kingdom.

In recent days, a cadre of conservative House Republicans allied with Trump has been privately exchanging articles from right-wing outlets that fuel suspicion of Khashoggi, highlighting his association with the Muslim Brotherhood in his youth and raising conspiratorial questions about his work decades ago as an embedded reporter covering Osama bin Laden, according to four GOP officials involved in the discussions who were not authorized to speak publicly.

“Khashoggi was tied to the Muslim Brotherhood,” Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner asserted on Thursday’s highly rated “Outnumbered” show. “I just put it out there because it is in the constellation of things that are being talked about.” Faulkner then dismissed another guest who called her claim “iffy.”

So my advice to those still in the political trenches is to take a step back and start building up something more people can get behind, because America needs a positive vision of the future now more than ever.

Please consider this my official resignation from the resistance, effective immediately. My current plan is to put on a hard hat and head back to Nipah to help build homes. After that, I look forward to helping people who have experienced trauma to rebuild their lives, which requires us to create a mental health care system where everyone has access regardless of insurance status.

I hope Americans of all political persuasions will join this construction crew, because whether you like it or not, building the future is something we always do together.
