Mr Trump was asked by a journalist if West could be a future presidential candidate, and the president replied: "Could very well be."

This is the stupidest day in American history, a record that will be broken by every subsequent day in American history.

i've been reading through perlstein's latest, Invisible Bridge, which is about how the U.S. shifted from nixon to reagan during the 70s. like nixonland, it's full of all sorts of wonderful and disturbing anecdotes and long forgotten scandals of the day. while reading Nixonland, though, i often found myself thinking "well, at least things haven't gotten THAT bad today". part of that was because i was reading it before trump, and part of it was that the 60s were full of a lot of political violence that i have trouble imagining, even now. the experience of reading Invisible Bridge is different, though. feels like everything is much, much worse and much dumber than the 70s. that's my review of the trump era so far: less violent than the 60s, so much dumber than ever before

The relentlessness of this shit is just beating down my already compromised level-best attempt to find small joys in day-to-day life.

The undertow wins. It's not even about paying attention to the news anymore. Tune it out, don't tune it out, it's irrelevant to the extent that this pervasive sense of dread is moving like a contagion between any two people with a conscience.

also in the white house today, separately from the kanye event: kid rock, mike love + weirdos

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump welcomed musicians Kid Rock and country star John Rich to the White House on Thursday as he signed legislation overhauling the way music is licensed and songwriters compensated.

Trump signed the Orrin B. Hatch Music Modernization Act on Thursday. The bill won wide bipartisan support in the House and Senate and is backed by the music industry. It’s named after the retiring Utah senator, who is also a musician.

Also joining the president were Mike Love of the Beach Boys, singer Sam Moore and the Christian group MercyMe.

The legislation creates a new independent entity that will license songs to companies that play music online.

The nonprofit collective will then pay songwriters, including those who wrote pre-1970s classics before music copyrights protected their work.

so...is the bipartisan drug bill signed by the prez any good? It looks like it, but I only read the NYT's summary.

that shit about HIlary/superman cape/playing catch with daddy: these are just unrelated words without any coherent meaning. I mean what the motherfuck? how am I supposed to convince my 12 year old to do well in school and go to college when illiterate dumbfucks like this hold sway over a nation? I fucking give up. This is what America deserves. Burn every fucking inch of it to the ground

My perspective is starting to shift towards incalculable gratitude for each sensible & coherent utterance and every kind & selfless act ever delivered into the world by human beings. Who could have guessed those things would ever become so endangered.

There was something about when I put this hat on that made me feel like Superman. That’s my favorite superhero. You made a Superman cape for me.”

spelling it out. need it spelled out? here it is, spelled out

I agree this is shameful and terrible but they're not random unrelated words. This is patriarchy and misogyny in visible action--supporting Hillary made him feel like less of a man, and less able to participate in masculinity, whereas jumping on the Trump bandwagon strokes his sense that he's included in the benefits of (explicitly) maleness and (I think, implicitly) whiteness, which is not an uncomplicated statement but still...BOOM. There you have it, in simple terms.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Thursday, 11 October 2018 22:37 (five years ago) link

Otm! I started writing something similar but you did a better job

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 11 October 2018 22:41 (five years ago) link

And if it isn't clear now, rest assured that people will continue to dumb things down until they're communicating their brokenness like guileless toddlers. 'I don't like you having things because not having all of the things makes me feel bad.'

NEW from me via #FOIA: John Kelly called Elizabeth Warren an "impolite arrogant woman" in an email following a conversation he had with her about Trump's travel ban.
