The best kind of offshoot boards are those addressing hobbies and parochial interests, where enthusiasts can ride their hobby horses as hard as they wish. Politics are a hybrid subject in that politics affects governance and government affects everyone. But politics consist of hundreds, if not thousands of issues, of varying degrees of breadth or importance, and political enthusiasts tend to treat minutiae with the same intensity as huge issues.

My sense is that an I Love Politics board is not going to successfully segregate out the hundreds of braided strands of politics into localized discussion threads for each of them. It would be less like I Love Music, with large numbers of active threads, and more like I Love Hoops or I Love Books, where one sprawling central thread captures 95% of the traffic, and subsidiary threads see very little interest.

Seems better to me to just keep politics threads in ILE and those who don't wish to dive in to the mega-thread don't have to. I'm not sure spawning a different board would change anything for the better. It would just rearrange the furniture.

A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 9 September 2018 19:06 (five years ago) link

That's fair.

My own argument in favor of a new board is that the politics threads seem to take up a huge amount of attention on ILE, and multiple posters have reported this has a negative effect on their wellbeing.

So I agree that we should be more welcoming of different opinions, but I think the forum question is more about accommodating people who feel overwhelmed by politics in general, and would like a break from dealing with these threads constantly being at the top of SNA.

I voted yes without really giving it any thought. If you had a specific political board, maybe people would be more inclined to start a thread on, I don't know, Edmund Muskie. But Trump has been so exhausting--I don't post very often on the Trump threads anymore--I don't have any strong feelings on the issue.
