I'm a big sucker for Gondry, so I'm pretty excited at the thought of Showtime giving him a show. Trailer is pretty out-there, which is... encouraging? I'll definitely be watching.

I'll give it a shot. Not a huge fan of Gondry or Carrey but Eternal Sunshine is such a great movie maybe there's a small chance lightning will strike twice idk

two months pass...

really spectacular moments imho, even if it sort of screams "look at me doing gondry things" a tad too often.

disappointed but not surprised there's not more discussion about it (not just here but in general). it absolutely does not fit into the Discourse of the Moment in any recognizable way, which is why its actually sort of a relief for me to watch.

I find that reassuring, actually

does it share any aesthetics with Death to Smoochy? (which i quite liked)

Kind of maybe? It’s been a long time since I saw that. This show is deeply deeply sad. I really like it.

The episode this week was the best one so far.

hearing it's not zeitgeisty has me intrigued, I'm generally only interested in stuff that doesn't fit in with current conceptions of tone or genre (see also Lodge 49)

Is that show any good? The commercials really put me off it

akm, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 18:33 (five years ago) link

It honestly might be my favorite thing I've seen all year; I haven't seen the ads but I can see how it would be a tough sell. You'll know within the first half-hour if it's your bag or not, I would think.

I couldn't really deal with this, too sad-sack

Thanks for the Lodge 49 tip, Simon! Just watched the first episode and really enjoyed it. I'll definitely get round to watching this Gondry thing, but was looking for something a bit spacier this evening.

one month passes...

watched the first episode and thought this was horseshit tbh

a lot of prestige tv is stars and successful producers/directors making mediocre tv with high production values. this is a case in point

I disagree (on it being horseshit). there are parts of this series that are very deeply emotional and quite bleak. Glad to see it was renewed.

four years pass...

Finished watching the first season and I think it's fantastic tbh, especially compared with current 'prestige' tv. Whenever you think it's leaning too hard into sentiment there's some dark twist. Keener (and everyone else) is really good in it.

Aside from being on Showtime, I find it weird that I've never heard anyone mention this show, ever.

I never watched the second season of this, but the first one was good; I simply forgot about it though.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Thursday, 26 January 2023 17:55 (one year ago) link

I liked it too, but I think the Carrey fans would be disappointed that it's not "zany Jim Carrey" and the drama fans might stay away because it stars "zany Jim Carrey."

nickn, Thursday, 26 January 2023 17:58 (one year ago) link

It's almost certainly the most I've ever liked him in anything.

Ok now I'm extremely miffed, because as of yesterday this is no longer streaming on Showtime, even though it's a Showtime show (and I only have a few episodes left of season 2). Apparently a ton of their shows are now gone due to the Paramount+ merger, wonder if it's temporary or forever.
