and to what extent to count as a split, i mean spain dropping catalunya hardly a split like

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 19 July 2018 10:55 (five years ago) link

not wrt EU but redrawing of borders, obv including any secession

ogmor, Thursday, 19 July 2018 10:57 (five years ago) link

Ireland.

United or gtfo.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Thursday, 19 July 2018 10:58 (five years ago) link

Moldova probably. Kosovo will integrate fully into Albania at some point.

Otherwise, UK - united Ireland or independent Scotland within thirty years if the UK leaves the EU and no particular appetite to crack down on secessionist movements like Spain.

BiH seems more likely than Moldova? Don't quite understand how the current BiH setup is working or how long it can last despite it seeming relatively fragile

Im assuming Ukraine and Serbia are disqualified as having already split?

cherry blossom, Thursday, 19 July 2018 11:28 (five years ago) link

ack that was meant to say 'relatively stable'

cherry blossom, Thursday, 19 July 2018 11:29 (five years ago) link

Wouldn't Moldova be said to have already split as well?

Here's a dark horse: Isn't Norway giving Finland a mountain or something like that? Technically that counts? I also don't think Denmark can keep Greenland and the Faroe Islands forever.

Moldova has kind of split but not formally. All three parts are corrupt in different ways but I think if there is any substantial appetite for democratic reform and EU access, over the next ten or so years, there will be a strong pull for the majority of it to rejoin Romania.

BiH also possible.

I was at dinner with some Russians and Poles earlier in the year and they both thought Ukraine would dissolve completely and merge with Poland and Russia but I don’t see it happening.

But does Romania want it?

Does the Republic want NI?

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Thursday, 19 July 2018 12:14 (five years ago) link

Um, yes?

The Romanians I've spoken to about Moldova have been quite skeptical about having it rejoin.

Frederik B, Thursday, 19 July 2018 12:17 (five years ago) link

Independent NI or Scotland within the next 5 years. Not cautious but if you're gonna bet, bet big imo

i was just about to post. 30 years is a very wide guess. i think confirmed as a joint policy within ten is a real possibility

if q refers to politicians put on spot or referendum result, y

if it refers to policy hedz or economists etc, jesus no fuck off imo

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 19 July 2018 12:58 (five years ago) link

do you see a (potentially transitional) independent NI as a possibility darragh? it feels more likely to me than an immediate union with the Republic

diarrhoea of a blimpy kid (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 19 July 2018 12:58 (five years ago) link

yes, i mean obv thats both kind of what has been the next obvious step but also what unionists have been fighting the momentum of since GFA

clear enough that the shifting and grunting required to keep the status quo is not functional but its p much brexit in miniature, two sets of unbalanced fanatics diametrically opposed and an unmeasured middle who want option 3 or just for it all to stop pls

if it could be delivered tomorrow it would last about a month maybe

would imagine an ulster basic y/n straight majority win referendum might be for united ireland but im sure thats already polled somewhere

But does Romania want it?

Romania does fully support Moldovan sovereignty but the government has said a number of times (affirmed by a symbolic parliamentary vote as recently as this year) that they would happily reintegrate with Moldova if the Moldovan people wanted it. At present, taken as a whole, a relatively small minority (something like a quarter) currently poll in favour but that could potentially change, at least outside of Transdniestr.
