Lmao doesn't seem strong enough.
Four out of five champions out in the group stage. Three in a row.
Rene Higuita breathes a huge sigh of relief

I cycled past a car with the windows down and the radio on just as SK scored and it was such a fantastic way to find out. Just watched it. Neuer giving up on being a goalie completely, Son with a cherry on top, absolutely amazing. Only Mexico let us down
― ogmor, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:18 (five years ago) link

smh at all these "football fans" who are celebrating a quality team like germany being eliminated from the competition already
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:35 (five years ago) link
Glad, and not surprised, that ilxor is a safe space in which I can fully express my disdain for the Mannschaft. The bandwagon had gotten so huge, there was nowhere to go.

Just remembered my boss (who is a Germany fan) is doing a Likely Lads on this and will be settling down to watch the recording about now. Kind of tempted to text him a congratulatory text around the 85th minute.

really enjoyed son having his moment today. i still feel a little giddy. let's get rid of more big boys. come on serbia
xp that is a valid point, I had thought I should start my German lesson with "sorry about the match" but yes, Likely Lads
keep stumm, darüber muss man schweigen, don't mention the etc etc

Given Mladen Krstajić's vile comments in the wake of Serbia's match against Switzerland, there's no reason not to root for Brazil.

Regarding the referee:
“We were robbed,” he said. “I wouldn’t give him either a yellow or red card, I would send him to the Hague. Then they could put him on trial, like they did to us.”Krstajic also posted photographs from the match on his Instagram account, accompanied by the comment: “Unfortunately, it seems that only the Serbs are condemned to a selective justice, once (it was) the damned Hague and today in football the VAR...”

it was v fun to see granit & xherdan stick it to serbia & the reaction was predictably ridiculous. lovren was recorded singing some sort of serb-killing volk anthem after the argentina game. all v wearisome and unsurprising
as was mentioned i think in the hype & anticipation thread, lots of brazilians have mixed feelings about supporting the national side in the current climate (hence the natty red shirts free from association with the brazilian football federation) and some are even supporting argentina. it's very difficult to feel bad about neymar losing
― ogmor, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 17:46 (five years ago) link
The World Cup is a totally fertile field for hating on vile politics and economics, anybody can take their pick tbf. Still have a softer spot for Brazil as a team than these other lads.

would love to see film of neuer’s reactions from the point he lost the ball upfield onwards. did he start trying to sprint back? at what point did he give up and succumb to despair?
― I'd Rather Kecak (NickB), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 17:53 (five years ago) link
Then the utter humiliation of having to play the remainder of the match back in goal in case he fucked up again.
― Alan Alba (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 17:55 (five years ago) link
Not been a great few months for German goalkeepers tbh.
sometimes the football teams and fans are the more modern/moderate/less hegemonic parts of society and it feels unfair to boo them for the faults of the wider nation, other times you've got australian fans making monkey noises at peruvian players. the world cup is truly a playground for prejudice
― ogmor, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 17:58 (five years ago) link
he didn't spend the rest of the match in goal though!
