US Politics, April 2018: Getting more dangerous (looks like moo vaughn's dreams are coming true)

Happy Easter.

The pastor answered that America had a long history of unjust laws and that it was the duty of Christians to stand with “the outcast.” He invited people to come meet this person that the government now considered an “ICE fugitive,” a designation that applies to more than a half-million undocumented immigrants failing to comply with final deportation orders. Come see the fugitive.

By summer, Rosa’s voice was hoarse from telling her story over and over to the steady stream of people stopping by, including the volunteers who slept on a mattress in the pastor’s office every night within reach of a folder scribbled with emergency instructions: “If ICE shows up, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR UNLESS THEY HAVE A BENCH WARRANT SIGNED BY A JUDGE!”

By fall, she found herself standing with a group of people holding candles to mark her first 100 days in sanctuary, noticing that many of them were wearing T-shirts with a drawing of her face and the slogan “Rosa Belongs Here.”

By winter, she was realizing that her best hope for a solution — a bill to legalize her status that would have to pass in Congress — was exceedingly remote, and soon, Rosa stopped reading political news altogether.

I’m sorry for being sick of ostensibly intelligent people having no memory and no ability to do math. That country exists right now. We live in it. Read the fucking polls and remember the popular vote.

For fuck’s sake.

Dude, people on every side of the election were taken by propaganda that flattered their worldview. Even ostensibly intelligent people have to make the individual effort to avoid being conned.

Remember when the epithet "flip-flopper" used to be contemptuously applied to politicians who compromised on their earlier stated positions? Trump doesn't even bother to have reasons for jumping around from one position to another. He just uses agitation as a substitute for direction, as in "look at all that commotion; he must be getting things done!"

Yabbut no one should be surprised; he sold it in advance as a-feature-not-a-bug. "We're too predictable!"

And people bought it, no doubt because of the way his luxuriantly flowing hair spoke eloquently of promises made, sang lustily of promises unkept because Fuck You, and shouted about not giving a shit because Fuck Your Feelings

Stormy Daniels was in both the 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, as was Rogen, who starred in the latter. Knocked Up came out in 2007, which means all the Trump stuff was either happening or just happened when they were making it. Of course Rogen would want to be buddies with her, and of course she would probably have talked about Trump, who was fresh in memory. The In Touch interview was four years later, in 2011, so apparently the Trump experience stuck with her.

the fact that there's even debate about whether these jokes told during a friggin roast were even about SHS's looks shows how relatively milquetoast they were. and obv it's one thing for people on the Left to debate it and decided if they were "over the line" and another for the party whose leader said much more direct and mean things about women's appearance (without even being clever enough to do it in joke form!)

Posting here because, well, not sure where else to post this.

"Reality snapped into focus the morning we drove into Downs (population 844). I’d been in a close friend’s wedding there in the 1980s, and the tiny, one-street downtown had teemed with life back then. My friend’s father owned, edited, and published the local newspaper. Another friend’s dad ran a successful real estate company. It took those girls forever to walk anywhere; everyone wanted to stop and chat. Downs had 1,324 residents in 1980—36 percent more than it has today.

Thirty years later, the blank faces of empty storefronts line the main drag. Oddly, one of the last remaining businesses we found was a well-stocked grocery store, though no one was shopping inside the brightly lit aisles. When we asked where we could get a cup of coffee, the cashier directed us to the gas station outside of town on the two-lane state road. A pot of brown water on a quick mart hot plate was the best the town had to offer.

Everywhere, I felt the absence—of people, of commerce, even of sound. The silence was broken only by a vintage pickup truck pulling up to the Downs grain elevator, huge mounds of excess grain piled high on the ground all around it.

That image—abundance at the center of a depopulated landscape—sums up the reality of rural Kansas. Yes, the harvest continues to be bounteous. But it masks a harder truth: Kansas’s plentiful grain crop has come at the expense of nearly everything else."

I know I've said it before, but although a Democratic House might move ahead with articles of impeachment in 2019 over perjury and obstruction charges, the Senate Republicans wouldn't vote to convict in sufficient numbers to remove Trump unless there's evidence of much worse crimes added to perjury and obstruction. Also, an impeachment inquiry would suck all the air out of the Congress and D.C., so that nothing else would get done.

I suspect we're all stuck with this goon for the full term of office, even if the foundations of the nation crumble around his feet.
