Nothing wrong with short posts. I encourage anyone with the energy to write three or more paragraphs at a time during a work day to continue doing so of course but I think quippy discussions on here are grand

anyway despite years of ilx-is-dying hysteria and specific user such as imago still posting there's still some life. I'm doing my part by starting threads about things that people don't want to talk about very much and I encourage everyone to do so

This is such a buoyant and optimistic take that I can cheerfully overlook the slight on my partner. I still find miles more of interest through ILX than any other internet platform.

I'm a bit over participating on the internet. Ive said all I need to say online over the last almost 20 years, and I'm a boring, middle aged stepmom now. NO one cares what I think. I'l happily read stuff from others though.

i am also boring and middle aged and i think this pretty much sums up where i'm at too. well said!

it's not what it used to be, that's for sure. the high school days of ilx are over. but it still beats every other place online imo, there are still a lot of great posters. and lj should be mod, yes.

i like ilx for nerding out about stuff no-one irl cares about, like pink floyd or whatever dumb podcast i like now or that one book i cant stop talking abouti also like it for politics, not to participate but reading takes from ppl here is a bit better than the swirling twitter toilet of opinion, though to be fair both have their good & bad days

I have doubts that anyone can truly leave ILX. It imprints itself into your psyche forever. Like, when I got my most recent/refined AncestryDNA results back and they showed I had 1% Norwegian ancestry (in addition to 1% Swedish ancestry -- LOL Vikings), my first thought was, "OMG, I'm 1% Geir!" This was before I most recently came back into the fold. I also calculated that 20% of my FB friends are people I met via this forum community. Unless you become super successful and Too Good for ILX, you're coming back.

This is pretty easily the best place on the internet. Some of the music discussion is good. The people are okay. But really, it's the only interface I can barely stand to look at. And none of my dumb friends from high school are here.

― alomar lines, Saturday, 13 April 2019 04:52 (five years ago) link
Even though I'm maybe 15% as enthusiastic and optimistic as I was the last time I was a regular? Wow, this site must be a LOT darker than it used to be! Anyway, Facebook (or certain groups in it and my similarly political friends) has turned me into a leftist libertarian/free market socialist, and there's a wider scope of political dialogue than would be found here on ILX, where as far as I can tell most everyone still reduces libertarianism to the caricatures of Roger Adultery and Murray Rothbard (if not a complete misinterpretation of Ayn Rand).
― The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Saturday, 13 April 2019 17:03 (five years ago) link
"Free market socialist" seems to me a contradiction in terms. The only tool society has to police markets to force them to serve broad social needs rather than serve capital's never-satisfied desire for ever-higher profits and monopoly over markets is government oversight and regulation, iow, unfree markets. If "free market socialist" actually means "strictly regulated market socialist", then I'm in your corner.
― A is for (Aimless), Saturday, 13 April 2019 17:43 (five years ago) link
dee is anarcho-communist, this is canon now
― be the 2 chainz you want 2 see in the world (m bison), Saturday, 13 April 2019 17:44 (five years ago) link
Y'all never heard of "social democracy"? That's the economic system I adhere to and doesn't sound at all "communist". Especially the way it exists in the mixed economies of the Scandinavian countries, who all also happen to rank the highest in global freedom indexes. BTW, one of my FB friends is a co-founder of the Libertarian Socialist Caucus (Mike Shipley).
― The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Saturday, 13 April 2019 19:06 (five years ago) link
trouble with the scandinavian countries is that they have a lot of space, a lot of resources and really no poverty to speak of
it's a great system if you can afford it
idk. surely libertarian socialism is an admirable end-goal but there's a hell of a lot of work to be done before it can be implemented anywhere with a serious poverty problem
― imago, Saturday, 13 April 2019 19:11 (five years ago) link
As I understand the term "social democracy" it would align pretty darn well with strictly regulated markets and align very poorly with any version of libertarianism or randian free market capitalism I have ever encountered. In which case, I'm in your corner, despite the confusion of terminology over your identity as a "leftist libertarian/free market socialist".
