(always wanted to make an ilx film thread with a string of names of a bunch of ppl i've never heard of)

a dark satire of the people atop the institutions of high contemporary art that won the palme d'or this year, for some reason. a couple great scenes and some quality dry LOLs, but overall i found it underwhelming and solidly an hour too long. claes bang is extremely handsome. i saw this because anthony lane wrote "If your respect for humanity is not entirely crushed by “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” and you want to finish the job, try “The Square” and it didn't come close to delivering on that promise

There's some talk about this film in the 2017 Detritus thread.

We don't seem to have a Triangle of Sadness thread so maybe I'll revive this one as the random Ostlund thread. Saw it yesterday; rather on-the-nose at points but paced out pretty well and I didn't expect where the last third of it ended up going.

I'm intrigued by this film, but responses seem to be pretty divided between fun satire and so on the nose it's not that fun.

I liked it more than I thought I would based on the "too on the nose" criticisms. Yes, it's on the nose, but it's also fun and takes some interesting turns.

Like, the *themes* might be broad and obvious, but the narrative isn't predictable.

I'm talking about Triangle of Sadness, btw, not The Square. But I liked both.

it’s just amazing films like this even get made. i had read nothing about it, had no idea where it was going

section 2 of this was really the best. Disagree with the "on-the-nose" assessment. All that is "on-the-nose" about this film served the narrative primarily. Feel like there has to be an air of conceit for "on-the-nose" to become an insult. In this instance, it was just good humoured, ol' fashioned F.U.N.
