Miraculously, haven't done this one. Don't worry, not too much intrusive "camera work" to get in the way in this contest.

Sunset Boulevard, though All About Eve is a close second

Oh brutha

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 October 2017 02:22 (six years ago) link

partly cuz it's in the same league with AAE and also to tick off the Quoting Sophisticates, I go with Minnelli and Tracy.

"Constantly!"

to tick off the Quoting Sophisticates

Throw that dreary vote away, it bores me.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 October 2017 02:33 (six years ago) link

The Quoting Sophisticates released a couple good synth pop LPs in the late eighties.

Not one of these is a terrible movie. Born Yesterday is the only one I wouldn't watch again.

Judy Holliday is a queen of comedy.

I thought that was your moniker.

don't threaten my butchness, i'll strangle ya with my boa

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 October 2017 02:51 (six years ago) link

This'll almost certainly end up being Sunset Blvd. for me, but this'll be a good time for me to finally crack that Born Yesterday blu-ray I picked up ridiculously cheap a few years ago.

I'm also willing to be convinced that I need to see FotB and KSM if anyone cares to make a case for 'em.

the general theme of STUFF (cryptosicko), Thursday, 5 October 2017 04:11 (six years ago) link

Tracy, the Golden Era's top American actor, gives his best and most touching comic performance in Father of the Bride.

Taylor is possibly at peak beauty, and her little brother is played by future Twin Peaks shrink Russ Tamblyn.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 October 2017 08:00 (six years ago) link

These days I might choose FOTB over Sunset Boulevard for second place.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 October 2017 11:43 (six years ago) link

All About Eve. Sunset Boulevard's the better film, I suppose, but I've never been that big on it. In a Lonely Place might win a 1950 poll; I'd vote for The Asphalt Jungle.

clemenza, Thursday, 5 October 2017 11:58 (six years ago) link

I did rewatch Sunset Boulevard a few weeks back and ... it just barely survives the B-plot material. Not a new wrinkle or anything, that's always been the case.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 October 2017 12:42 (six years ago) link

In A Lonely Place definitely is the one 1950 Hollywood movie I wish were in this lineup aside from ones that already are.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 October 2017 12:43 (six years ago) link

The confident over-reliance on voice-over has always smothered Sunset Boulevard for me.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 October 2017 12:45 (six years ago) link

Though the gentle atmosphere is very MacBethish.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 October 2017 12:51 (six years ago) link

I haven't your unyielding good taste.

Sunset Blvd. if only for von Stroheim and the chimpanzee funeral.

The Third Man won B&W cinematography this year (released in the US in Feb '50, six months after the UK). Carol Reed and the editor were nominated.

...ie the same number of nominations as Caged!

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 October 2017 17:20 (six years ago) link

Buster Keaton saying "pass" is one of my very favorite things in Sunset Blvd.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 October 2017 18:09 (six years ago) link

Also ...

The confident over-reliance on voice-over has always smothered Sunset Boulevard for me.

I cut the movie a break on that count; having a dead guy as the narrator is a nice gothic-noir solution.

Probably his best talkie role. xp

― difficult listening hour,

Late James had fewer adjectives, more faggotry.

my fave AAE trivia is that they started a real Sarah Siddons Award after the movie incorporated a fictional one.

Have y'all read Sam Staggs' AAE book? I pull it off the shelf for a chuckle once in a while.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 October 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link

I've read it. It could easily become my next Sontag & Kael; something I just read snippets from as a quick pick-me-up.

I'll admit I may have seen better days, but I'm still not to be had for the price of a cocktail, like a salted peanut.
