Tarragon the Dragon, on the other hand, turned up in a lot of childhood nightmares

Charlie Cairoli, the clown. I hated him as a child. He used to make me cry, and I wouldn't watch his stupid programme. Looking at this clip of Seaside Special (couldn't find any of his actual show), it all comes right back to me. He used to slap the other guy in the face for no reason. It was a kind of violence that just wasn't funny to me then, and still isn't.

Even as a 5 year old I used to fret about the efficacy of Dr Snuggle's wooden rocket ship.

I remember Dr. Snuggles and it freaked me out, too, Dutch rendition was just as creepy.

There was a thing on after Blue Peter/Newsround called Mud, and sometimes I caught glimpses of it, and in one episode there had been made clones of the main characters out of some kind of fungus or something, and one of these characters exploded into gooey vomit, into which a real character fell, and it scarred me for years, and thinking about it now is still a bit creepy

There is something I saw in the late 70's where there are a load of Guy Fawkes type dummies that are referred to as "uglies". And a girl unknowingly makes them into sentient beings that go on a violent rampage, by just wishing that they were alive in conversation. I'm not making this up, but it is so long ago, I can't remember wtf it is. I remember watching it at a friend's house who had a colour tv, which was quite posh by my standards, but it made it seem more lurid + troubling. And my friend got run over and killed by a drink-driver a few months later. So maybe that added to the legend.

Jigsaw is the one that freaked me out the most. A half-remembered nightmare from when I was very young. In the early days of the net, I did a search for Mr Noseybonk online and found nothing. Years later, I discover that a mini-cult has grown around this terrifying character, with a number of spoofs and tribute videos and even Charlie Brooker doing a piece about him.

Anyway:

two weeks pass...

When I was a child, in the early ‘80s, there was an advertisement that occasionally came on television, amidst the kids’ shows on the Australian Broadcasting Commission (as it then was). My memories are a little vague—I was only young—and nobody else seems to recall the ad. It was very effective, though, and it scared the pants off me.

In this advert, sponsored by some anti-nuclear organisation, a small boy in pyjamas is looking out of his bedroom window at the night sky. One star in particular is obvious, glowing brightly in the sky. The boy starts singing “Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are..,” to himself, and as he does so the star gets brighter and brighter. Then there’s a flash of white light and white noise; the boy, the room, the world all fade into darkness.

The Reboot episode in which Dot gets cornered in the street and the villains who control the awful new government shave her hair off and laugh at her, then she makes this horrible distorted scream. That was properly fucked up. It was like a rape scene.

The Might Max episode when Freako deforms Max. That was difficult to deal with too.

I've often felt the generation that grew up at the height of the 80s Cold War tensions were mentally scarred as much by anti-nuclear propaganda as much as the threat of the bomb itself. From a young age being repeatedly told that you and everyone you know is highly likely to witness civilization falling in the grimmest, most helpless way imaginable, and if even you live through it you might as well have not. No wonder kids ended up in therapy over it.

In some ways I envy the generation of youngsters that haven't had that utter, bone-chilling fear instilled into them, even though the world we live in now is in many was as dangerous and unstable as it was in 1983.
